1.
Or you can buy my very nearly new rig foe loads less. AND I can but food lol
Your rig is a bargain Stealth, even I can't justify two of them though
 2.
The V4B is bliss!! It's like the best tone you can get with an Ampeg P500 and then make it 3D. It's amazing - the tone I was searching for :-) Mine is a 1994 model and it rocks!
+1
 3.
Another option is to contact Andy Baxter www.andybaxterbass.com and ask him to find you an original 70's example. He's super-hooked up with guitar traders globally and he could probably find what you're after (year, finish, condition, etc..) I think you might be surprised how much less this option will cost compared to a special order Custom shop build. Better investment longterm too I imagine. Edit: I have no affiliation with him at all. I just drool at his website every once in a while! I personally would love a Y.O.B. '72 fretless P myself.
Spot on, and a wanted ad on Basschat ain't a bad idea either
 4. Small PJB boxes, low output levels and hiss are in my opinion a fact of life. I had a Markbass 1x8 box that was about half the size of the cub but twice as loud and sounded much better with bass to my ear. The only PJB stuff that has worked for me in gig terms has been the larger boxes, but they tend to be both prohibitively heavy and expensive. In fact, I got rid of all my PJB on the basis of weight alone - if I'm going to lug that much weight to a gig it's going to need to be justified by several large tubes and the ability to wobble lower limbs. PJB gear is very very high quality in so many respects. But....
 5.
... as they satisfied my "light and loud" criteria, and although I'm not in love with them, I like them enough to not need to get rid off them any time soon. I have my criticisms about them too. I don't think they're the best sounding. But they do a decent job. I can't think of many bits of equipment that I love 100%. There's always something that could be better.
That sums up my thoughts exactly. I can walk my whole rig to a local pub with bass on back, do a set with sufficient volume and tone to keep up with the drums through a rig that to my mind fits the aesthetic and which is large enough to have the visual presence I like for a bass amp, have a couple of pints and walk home. In short, for me the cab does the job I need it to. I've had far 'better' cabs that didn't do the job in one or more respects. If Boogie made a 1516EV that I could similarly carry to a pub in one hand I'd be using that. If the larger PJB cabs weren't so ludicrously heavy I'd use one of those but they are!
 6. Seems a very expensive way of getting a pretty bog standard bass tone (have a listen to Jamerson solo'd).
 7. I doubt Martin Simms does anything that isn't absolutely outstanding. Might not be to your tastes (as per JTUK's post), but it will be of extremely high quality if it is. He and his team do very very high quality work
 8. Not that Jas needs any more feedback but just wanted to say thanks for the rather lovely blonde that he parted with yesterday, as well as for his patience and helpfulness in doing so. As has generally been the case with me and blondes, I'm a very happy man this morning, and I suspect that this particular model might last a little longer than the brunette it replaced.
 9. Oldest rule in the book is that the bass tone you prefer soloed rarely sounds right in the mix, both live and recorded. This is unless of course you're sufficiently experienced to have acquired a taste for the tone that does work in the mix
 10. I have experienced endless problems running various interfaces with both my iMac and my Macbook. All I can recommend is that you adopt the same approach that worked for me, that is - in your case anyway - entering 'problem MacBook Pro plugged into an Audio Box USB by Presonus' and searching through all of the crap threads from various forums until you find one that has the solution. I'm confident that you won't be the first person to experience this particular problem, and one way or another every instance of it will find its way online. One thing I have found to my annoyance is that the support pages for the devices in question a rarely have the solution. I've also decided on the basis of many trials and tribulations that I will not be changing interfaces anytime soon unless I really have to!
 11.
Yes, you can connect up to another cab with one of them if your amp has only one input.
Or output? Great deal for a great cab and I am SO tempted Lozz. If it's still there tomorrow - which it shouldn't be - I'm on it
 12.
........so an even more fab package than I'd first thought! Kev knows I've been sorely tempted by this, and if I wasn't about to spend an arm and a leg to restore your old "Wazz" to orig spec, Chris (I'm going over to Electric Wood next week) I'd have had this a while ago. That 4003FL was something special, mind
The 4003FL is still with me and ain't ever going anywhere again Greg. When are you going to EW, I'm gigging over that way next weekend (I think), would be great to catch up. And back on topic, the Fretless Precision would make a nice foil to the Wazz
 13. I'm very surprised this hasn't sold so I thought I'd link to a few posts from a while back
I have to say that I had to think long and hard before selling that bass, and would probably still have it back if I only had a band! It is an outstanding example of one of the most iconic instruments Fender have ever made, with a very playable neck (with an incredible and sympathetic refin of the board by Martin Simms meaning that the playing surface is probably far better than when it left Fullerton), no doubt an equally good body refin by Howard, and a rather rare mix of good old PBass thump when you need it with some more interesting and less predictable tones (for example, I used it for a cover of 'Song from under the floorboards' by Magazine and it nailed the menacing and sinuous fretless tone to perfection). The buyer won't be disappointed
Still very true
Stick a BBOT bridge and both bridge and PUP ashtrays on that and it would look even better. Lovely lovely bass, really surprised it's still here especially given the rarity of the maple board
And I stand by that Kev, ashtrays on that bass would add to what is already a stunning aesthetic
I used to own this neck - as is the way of BC; Chris traded it to me, and I later traded it back to him attached to a '79 ash body (not the one in the OP I think), and have to say it's quite phenomenally nice. Would be so tempted if had the moolah.....
Same body Greg, Kev had it refinished by the Bass Doc. You'll remember that the neck and body worked really quite nicely. I had this bass and the 4001FL at the same time and the only reason this went was because the 400FL really is that good a bass (in 20 years I've yet to find a bass to which I have such an affinity), but I do wish I could afford to keep both! All the best with the sale Kev C
 14. Sold pending the usual
 15.
I didn't notice the weight on mine as they are so well balanced and just 'fit' right. I wouldn't let 5kg put anyone off. Sounds heavy but doesn't feel heavy.
Thanks for that mr zed. To be honest, when I put it on the scales I was really surprised it was over 4.5kgs, even more so when the TRB-6 weighed in at over half a kilo lighter (I'd have put what little money I have on the TRB-6 being the heavier of the two for sure). Even now I know the difference, when they're on a strap they both feel pretty much the same. Whilst I'm on weight, I weighed the TRB-5 on a different set of scales today and it came it at 10.5lbs. Certainly in the over 10lbs region either way. Played it today also, I'm starting to wonder if I should keep it and defret it, it is such a stunning bass and would no doubt make an amazing fretless
 16. Will these work on a 2x2 34" scale bass? If so, I'll have them Chris
 17.
Great looking bass Chris; GLWTS! Quick question - is the string spacing really 17mm at the bridge? I though that Yamaha 5s were generally 19mm at the bridge - certainly the two I've had over the last 10 years have been.. Nik
Hi Nik Good to hear from you mate, hope all's well? Decided to get the electronic doobry out for this and results are below (not entirely sure where spacing should be measured so have given three options) Centre B to centre E string at tailpiece 18.10mm Outside of G string to outside of D string at saddle 18.63mm Centre to centre of G to D string at saddle 17.44mm And I have just reweighed the bass and sorry to those of you who PM'd asking me to do so, it is still 5kg. I was wondering whether the scales were crap so weighed the TRB6, which is far bigger (56mm at the nut and 20mm spacing), but that weighed in at 4.3kgs. The vagaries of wood I guess I will say that I don't find the fiver heavy (it's certainly lighter than my old Wal which I really had to grapple with. Having said this I do own a mid 70's Strat that weighs in at 4.3 kgs, the same as the TRB6, so perhaps I'm just a real man
 18. Hi folks Back at home so some details, apologies for the delay Weight (tested and retested albeit on bathroom scales) is exactly 5kgs, which I'd guess isn't too bad for a fiver and is considerably lower than is the case with my TRB6 Width at nut is a rather Kylie-esque 44mm (I've played 4 strings with wider necks) Width at 12th fret 66mm String spacing at bridge is 17mm I can only find one knock on it, it's in the usual tip of headstock position, and at about 1mm is too small to photograph. I couldn't see it but could feel it when I ran my hand over the finish. This is, as I said above, a lot of bass for the money. I've had a few offers for the 6 even though I haven't listed it so if this doesn't go quickly I may sell the 6 instead, if only because whilst I prefer the 6 for noodling, I suspect that live the 5 will be more useful. Cheers Chris
 19. Hi, sorry this thread is now closed Chris
 20.
Brilliant basses - had one for a few years until I made the decision to go back to 4 strings. Build quality is right up there and the amount of tones that are available is unbelievable. They'll do anything well and the piezo adds a subtle extra dimension (or not so subtle if you boost the piezo volume right up). Gives it an acoustic type vibe. GLWTS. I would have this if I was after a 5 string. They really don't get much better.
Thanks Mr Zed, you're making me want to keep it even more
Hi Beedster. Please what is the weight? Year of birth? Thanks. Vilem
Hi Vilem, I'll confirm exact weight once I'm back home Chris
 21.
I had one of these, a truly amazing bass.
+1, a real monster
 22.
There are some other photos of the bass from my September Ebay listing here (should still be visible): http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1560.l2649. If you hover over they are a reasonable size. I can testify to it being a fabulous bass, bought from The Bass Gallery and one owner until I sold to Beedster, who by the way is a top bloke to do business with. If I had the money I'd buy it back.
Ed, hope all's well and thanks so much for linking to the ebay listing. I've attached those pics below also, hope that when folks click on them they come up larger than those in the first post
 23. If you're basing your decision about cabs - especially on one cab cutting through and another not - on one soundcheck, I'd spend a bit of time checking out various cabs in various bands in various spaces. The two latter variables make a massive difference, and whilst it seems reasonable to suggest that in the one situation in which you've tested your gear a brighter cab might do the job better, you might find a brighter cab not to your liking in others.
 24.
Can't see how there would be a monopoly with physical cash though?
The move from the barter economy to cash probably turned banks/governments into the most effective/successful monopolies possible
