Many thanks for all of the above guys, greatly appreciated. The biggest challenge I'm having at present is muting; playing fingerstyle (or DB equivalent) allows me to mute especially the E string with the inside of my thumb (the end of which I rest on the side of the far end of the board). I'm kinda working around it buy developing a technique that allows me to slap with my thumb still in place (and therefore mute), but suspect this might be a technique I'm going to have to unlearn at some stage if I want to progress? Fun though

Thinning the herd as i need some rather specific gear for a new gig. First up a fretless Jazz in rather fetching Stealth colour scheme (i.e., all black). Fender MIM '70s RI body, electrics and hardware, Allparts Jazz neck with ebony board. The neck is especially nice and was my main FL neck until I recently had a custom Warmoth FL neck built to my specs. The body has been well played and has a few dinks, blemishes etc. The bridge and back PUP have a few spots of rusts also. Having said this, the MIM PUPs/circuit are pretty decent - in fact to my ear surprisingly so - and do a really decent job. In short, the bass plays very very nicely, neck and body work very well together to produce some lovely fretless tone with good sustain. I'm happy to say this is pretty much as good as all but the best Fender MIJ/MIAs so at £275 this is a real bargain. As with all my deals, you don't like the bass, you get your money back. You will need new strings, those on this bass are very played in! I will of course add a string tree also! Second up, the bass I always wanted but sadly don't have a ZZ Top tribute act to play it in. I will say nothing more than with Warmoth top quality neck and body, SD Antiquity SC Precision PUP (not the SCPB-1 in the photo below), and very decent tuners and bridge, this bass rocks and is also a bargain given how much it would cost to order the parts. It's a great bass for a 3-piece, really fills in the tone. Looks like the dogs danglies also I thought I had a few more pics of this, I'll try to take some more tomorrow. £425, again a bit of a steal and again you get your cash back if you don't like it. FS Double Bass Hard Case - NOW SOLD
Beedster replied to bassace's topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
Not to be confused with the bulky Styrofoam cases, this one is made of GRP with plush lining and padding. It's wheeled. It's quite slimline inasmuch as any DB case can be and provides excellent protection. Its shape is like those old cello cases and is suitable for a 3/4 DB. It has been all over Europe with me and has flown to Lanzarotte and back - yes. Can be collected from Oxfordshire or could meet up but best bring your bass to make sure it fits. £350
Hiya mate, after a 'moment' with my ageing blonde on my back and a rather drunk gentleman in a dark street the other night (sounds like a Tom Waits song doesn't it), I did consider buying another a hard case, but reflected on the fact that my previous case didn't permit both it and player to be in the same car at the same time! In short it was huge! Do you have dimensions for yours? I'd quite like some pics also if possible. I could get to Oxford way week of 17th if it works out. Cheers Chris -
Surprised not to find a thread with this or a similar title here...........? Anyway, I've dabbled in slap on DB but it never really appealed, and having always played with drummers live, have never really needed to use it. However, it looks like I'll be assuming bottom end and rhythm duties in a drummer-less bluegrass band soonish, so I need to get some more percussive elements into my repertoire, probably not to a huge degree, but certainly sufficient to push things along in up tempo stuff. I'm playing a nice old faded blonde which looks and sounds the part, it's got some real warmth at core whilst being capable of being quite in your face when needed (this is unlike my old Martin which was rather polite by comparison). I've got the action at around a centimetre at the end of the board, and the height looks pretty even across the strings to be honest (Jason/Legion might be able to confirm the make of the strings as they came with the bass but they feel pretty easy on the hands, not unlike Silver Slaps albeit a little warmer and with a smidgeon more tension). So, where to start really? Any advice re best strings, best action and good tuition resources would be gratefully received. Cheers Chris
...and here is the first! I prefer flatwounds on a fretless because I am into the 'Graceland' tones, but also really enjoy the super-fast feel of gliding around the fretboard without strings noise. I use d'addario chromes at the moment - the 'custom' set, AKA balanced tension. I also find that the 'mwah' from flatwounds is much more even and bloomy - you just have to lower the action.
+1 to all the above, to my ear flats also get rid of some of the nasal-ness without loosing the essential fretless vibe.

Hagstrom Super Swede 'Abba bass' - Northern Series ↓PRICE↓
Beedster replied to Bassalot's topic in Basses For Sale
Back in the 70's when I was playing a Satellite Bass I always dreamed of having a Hagstrom. I used to sit and look at the ads in guitar magazines and imagine a world in which I could own one (keep in mind that at the same time I used to imagine a world in which I was married to Agnetha Faltskog). Seeing this beauty brought all the memories back, and the links to Abba only made them the sweeter. A lovely bass, which i could justify the fee! Good luck with the sale. PS talking of Agnetha, I was in a pub a few years back with a very good and very drunk friend, and we were reminiscing about childhood. The conversation went something along the lines My mate: "Who were you most obsessed with when you were a kid" Me: "The blonde one out of Abba" My mate: "What, Benny....?" Makes me laugh every time, but perhaps you had to be there! -
Anybody any idea what this guy is on about?
Beedster replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
That guy's certainly having a bad day. Either way, I hope someone can identify the shop to enable me - and I'm guessing a few others on here - to avoid it like the plague, and with any luck to ensure that whichever member of staff filmed and uploaded this gets fired. May have been filmed by a customer of course, but something makes me think not. C -
Have to say that in the early days when first playing and gigging fretless with the band, I found intonation a whole lot easier when I switched to heavier strings. In intonation terms these were simply more forgiving than lighter gauges and allowed me to develop the confidence to gig fretless. I'm guessing that heavier gauges are simply more stable and less responsive to being pulled. On that basis you only have end-to-end tuning issues to deal with as opposed to end-to-end and side to side issues. I still don't like light strings on fretless instruments.

Beedster replied to karlfer's topic in Basses For Sale
Bloody hell, I've only just seen this Folks, you are going to have to trust me on this, as a previous owner of this bass who sold it for the most pathetic of reasons, that is I didn't like the way it looked (and I'm talking the body not the neck by the way, in fact I started hankering for the same bass with a natural finish and an SCP PUP, which is what I eventually ended up with) - this is an OUTSTANDING instrument. And, as anyone who is anyone in the bass world knows, reverse headstocks are SO this year..... So, for all you [s]ladyboys[/s] [s]weaklings[/s] [s]pansies[/s] unfortunate folk who need a lightweight bass, but a lightweight bass that rocks, THIS IS THE BASS. It is ludicrously light, in fact, all joking aside, that was another aspect of this bass I didn't really get on with, I'm one of the very small minority who actually like heavier (10lb-ish) basses. It punches well above that lightweight tone wise and is a dream to play - light, resonant and fast. For the money you won't get a better bass of this type, period. And BTW, Karl is a true gent and a pleasure to deal with, so you will not have any problems whatsoever with the deal. Chris -
You have to play with your ears and not your eyes.
Eyes can be helpful, something I learned from my early days playing DB live - especially when with poor monitoring - was to use a chromatic tuner and check whenever necessary the agreement between what I think my ears are hearing (in tune/not in tune) and a reliable measure of pitch.
Try as many things as you can and dispose of what doesn't work for you, that way you'll sound like you and not a clone of, whoever. Today I was using a pick with my fretless and was loving the sound. I may do it some more on other songs. There are no rules as such, just music. The modern bass guitar is only around 65 years old, so who is to say what's right and what's wrong?
Agreed, to my ear medium-heavy flats, played with a pick on a fretless Ric or Precision is a to-die-for tone. Probably true for a Jazz also I just haven't tried it yet.
I think that when anyone writes "do it your way without bothering if you're doing it correctly", does he remember that all these artists have studied (not learned, it's not the same) music, even when they say exactly the opposite ?
OK, you tell me what is 'correctly' and if I agree I'll agree with whatever else you say.....? The point is, there's no such thing as 'correctly'. The OP cites Jaco. Jaco wasn't doing it 'correctly' when he hit the scene in the late 60's, not by the then EB standards anyway. No-one above has said don't study or learn, but a few people have suggested that there are no 'fretless bass rules' as such, so study what you choose to study and learn what you choose to learn is good advice, whilst 'don't use slides' etc is just rhetoric.
By the way, I was kidding when I wrote that Beedster was right : Have you ever tried writing and reading without knowing the basic principles ?
The basic principles in question are those of music; tone, melody, harmony and rhythm. You're perhaps confusing rules of communicating a language - in your example reading and writing - with the aptitude for language itself. Language is analogous to sonic expression, and language is a phenomenon for which humans posses well developed/evolved processes that are independent of their ability to read or write them.
don;t listen to people who tell you what to do. From Percy Jones himself: ' If you feel that a fretless bass is the best instrument for you to express yourself on then get stuck in and work hard with it. Strive to get your own “voice” out via the instrument and learn to differentiate between positive and negative criticism" There are a lot of fretless players around and a lot of them sound the same, a kind of dull sound, lots of vibrato... blah blah.... Theres a hell of a lot you can do with a fretless, as i'm finding out, but I would would say try and avoid that cliche sound, explore what it can do Percy Jones and Mick Karn used slides all the time, harmonics, etc .... no rules
Exactly

The best advice I can give is to ignore what others say and follow your nose. Some people play a fretless in just the same way as they play a fretted, others consistently do things on a fretless that are impossible on a fretted, most stick somewhere in the middle. Not using slides too much? Well I'm not sure, if it's right for the music, do it, if it's not, don't. Been listening to Graceland today and the fretless on those tracks contain just about every cliche in the fretless book (plus some innovation for sure), but they're perfect for the songs and in many respects definitive lines. Personally, I really really really don't like chorus on fretless, but my not liking it and my suggesting you don't do it are - and should be - two different things. I guess the trick is to do what sounds and feels good to you. My fretless playing is pretty agricultural - often out of tune to be honest, and often a little too obvious (I used to play cello and often still think like a cellist) - but I like it, the musos I play with like it, and judging from the response I get at gigs, audiences are OK with it. I don't try to sound or play like anyone else or follow any rules other than my own, and I doubt I sound like anyone else.

Will reply to PMs ASAP Chris -
How lucky it's not still sunburst or I would have been forced to sell children in order to buy it
Like I said mate, no trades, even kids, although it's in part due to the proliferation of kids chez Beedster that I am forced to sell this beauty anyway!
Lovely P-Bass Chris! What's the neck like on this one? GLWTS!
Neck is lovely Byron, just how a proper Precision neck should be. Looking for a quick sale to pay for something that I shouldn't be buying! Bought a few months back from Andy Baxter who had it up for what was a bargain £999. Lovely player, light at just over 8lbs, and tonally more like a mid-60's than a mid-70's (a bit more woody and resonant to my ear than the 70's models I've owned). I've another mongrel 70's Precision so, given I have been offered a stunner of a fretless, this really needs to go sharpish. Andy's original listing here http://andybaxterbas...ils.php?id=856. I'll post some more pics when I get home. No trades or offers please, this is the cheapest 70's Precision you will find, and whilst it's clearly did it's A-Levels at the School of Hard Knocks and a degree at the University of Life, if Precisions are your thing, you will not be disappointed.
i got it in usa like 2 years ago , nice instrument refreted 2 months ago really easy to play . cheers
Ah, OK,. The reason I asked is that I saw a very similar bass at that shop, and the neck had at some stage been snapped and repaired. It was a very good repair, but still a serious issue for any buyer. Looking at the pics you posted I noticed that there weren't any of the back of the neck, which is why I was a little suspicious that it could be the same instrument?
Voice of decent here. My old PJB M500 out-Ampeged Ampegs. Utter valve tone, not valve 'like' from MOSFETS. Not light though
Really? I used to gig both an M500 and a V4B at around the same time in my 'career' (I use the term loosely), and I certainly wouldn't say the former did or could Ampeg the latter. In fact to my mind it's chalk and cheese, both are high quality, but neither can do what the other excels at.
