1. Thanks for the good words guys, and good to know how highly regarded Paul was by BC-ers Bass now withdrawn from sale
  2. This is a very lovely 5 string – the “Rex” model I think. Hand-built in around 2005 by Paul MacNab in Huddersfield, who sadly passed away in July 2010. I’d call it a lightweight, but can weigh for those interested. Paul had a reputation not only as an outstanding luthier, but also for being extremely choosey about selecting the loveliest tonewoods for his instruments, and this sure shows here. I acquired this in a trade with lozbass with a view to potentially moving from 4 to 5 string, but as the material I’ve been playing hasn’t demanded a 5 plus I’ve been focussing on my flamenco playing (and am just venturing into bluegrass banjo!) this hasn’t had the playing time it deserves. Specs;

1-piece mahogany body with carved quilt maple top (5A grade I reckon), clear amber finish
34” scale bolt-on neck; highly flamed maple with rosewood / bubinga / ebony laminations. Oil / wax finish on “playing zone” of neck, varnished headstock & heel. Wenge board (dot markers to side only), 24 frets. Schaller BM tuners.
Twin soapbar pickups (German “Goldo” make), active 9V circuit with bass & treble cut/boost, individual volume controls for each p/up. Pull switch on rear vol control for active / passive operation. (NB' I've actually bought an East U-retro preamp to fit in this, but as yet unfitted. Can negotiate included if interested)
Heavy duty chrome Goldo bridge; allows individual string spacing lateral adjustment.
These were around £1200 new at the time, and this is a rare example in outstanding condition. Price drop to £425 for a quick sale (in Tobias soft case) for one week only (to Sat 24th Nov) after which it will definitely be withdrawn - plus shipping, or collection from Swansea area - no trades, sorry. I'll be at M4 Reading services on Sun 25th Nov if that's easier for anyone interested to collect Cheers, Greg
  3. Probably no help at all, but I'm on my regular Swansea <-> Cambridge run next weekend. If someone (student?) can get it down to Cambridge, I can take down to M25 Though being something of an Ovation-head, I probably wouldn't want to let it go......
  4. Schaller bridge the best 4-string unit ever IMHO, way more attractive and more configurable than a badass. Wish I could think of a reason for buying another one, but bump for some cool gear

Just bought an Aguilar pre off Gary, my third deal with him so I must have been neglectful of leaving feedback previously - apologies Top guy to deal with, a real pleasure to communicate with, and he owns some cracking gear And he's Welsh. There is no higher feedback status.
  6. Ah, my old squeeze! This is a truly lovely bass; an outstandingly well crafted bit of luthiery, light, fastest neck I've ever played, superb tone (much more Fender Jazz than EB-2) and cool as f*ck. Loz is right, the pics were done on my old camera and don't do the finish justice. Should add that Loz is an absolute gent to do business with. Really, really tempted to buy this back, I gigged it in preference to some much more "boutique" vintage basses for a couple of years solid.......... Edit: Fits the "large" Hiscox hard case BTW (one FS on the forum now! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=150629 )
  7. Just bought a Fender case off Andy (unfortunately he remembered to take the P bass out first...... ) - easy, smooth deal. Top bloke to deal with, would do so again anytime - cheers mate
  8.
Greg, that Ovation is simply stunning, a 100% design classic. I'd have throught that it and the Wal would be quite similar in the same way as my Precision and Ric share a great degree of tonal options (although having rounds on the Precision and Ric Tapes on the 4003 reduces the crossover substantially)? The Wal is nice too of course C
You'd think they'd be similar, both being essentially mahogany bodied / twin humbucker / ebony board fretlesses. But in fact not; the Ovation is passive, has a more "acoustic" core tone, and has two very different p/up designs for bridge and neck placed about as far apart as it's possible to. Combined p/up's gives quite a Jazz bass-y "honk", but neck p/up solo has a massive amount of low end and does a very convincing woody acoustic upright DB tone - similar to the Ric in fact - and the Wal can't do that. What the Wal does do is that slightly compressed, mid-rich growl / mwah that every '80's bassist (myself included) wants. Playing ergonomics are almost identical though, which is a plus. Liking the new bridge on the maple Precision BTW, and gonna have to try DR Bootsy's.......
  9.
I don't think it gets better than this pair '78/'79 Precision and '07 4003. Ric 4445 tapes on the 4003 give pure McCartney thump, DR Bootsy's on the Precision give it quite an 80's Wal-esque vibe. Very different animals but the Ric has the edge.
Seen those before somewhere, and boy I bet they sound sweet through that rig! My current two, that between them cover about every tone Id want -
  10. +1 to above I own a fretted (long scale) '76 Alembic series 1 (birdseye maple / ebony) and '85 fretless Wal Mk 1 Custom (american walnut / ebony with a non-typically slim neck profile). To me they're by a mile the best fretted and fretless active basses respectively that I've ever played and owned; but it wouldn't work at all (for me) the other way around - ie; fretted Wal and fretless Alembic. Edit; NB: neither you could call light, but also not what I'd call unreasonably heavy (mind you, my main gigging bass used to be a Gibson RD Artist! )

  12.
Thats gorgeous Shaggy! And I am regularly called Stig, maybe its a Rickenbacker owner thing?
If I was any good at photoshopping I'd have done you a Jetglo Rick-playing Stig avatar! Back to Rick Resource; have to say I always found them friendly helpful chappies, but then again I guess I never posted anything contentious
  13.
I sold one on here a couple of years back but can't mind the buyer's name.............
'Twas me mate, & still lovin' it! (here's a couple of pics.....) Fabulous basses Re "Top Bassgear" - bags I be Stig; got the face for it!
  14. Quote: "Propulsive Flurry vs Defined Chug?" Dunno, but a couple of funky band names there!
  15. Mine The original & best!
  16.
Off topic, is that a Red Gibbo Explorer? . (No, I can't afford it). I had me a white one for about 15 years, loved it, sold it for £400 to a mate. I think I have evolved into a dickhead!
Yes, original Ferrari red '85 Of my five Gibson basses it's actually the one I've gigged the most - cracking basses
  17.
The red bass thing is the result of myself and a few mates trying to put together a Southern Boogie thing down here to play pubs, nothing too serious (or too good), and it got me thinking that I'd like a fretted bass that's a bit more Rock 'n' Roll than anything I've got at present. C
You need to buy this off me mate......... Seriously though, that Gretsch is absolutely lush.
  18. Bought a pair of P / J Bartolini pickups off Rob; smooth deal, great communication - cheers!
  19.
Thought I'd close this. Having not spent much longer tahn around a month with the Stingray HH, and then having tried a Jazz and a heavily pimped Squier Jag P/J (lovely bass by the way), I'm now pretty much decided on my old Ric 4003 FL, which was recently repatriated from Wales courtesy of Greg (Shaggy), who did a great job or sourcing original Ric PUPs for it. I have to admit that, in relation to this thread, it would have been way down my initial list, but I and the band love it, and it just works for the music we're doing Funny how things work out isn't it.
God damn, you're making me want it back! Actually even for a Ric it's a pretty special bass. How's the maple-board fretless P working out? I'm loving the '65 P; funny how the three P basses that finally sold me on Fenders you've also owned at some point.......
  20.
Upon further investigation, McGeogh's actually a very good source for soundclips of the rhythm tone as most people play lead style licks and phrasing on these guitars.
Nail on the head, and I was thinking more of his previous work with Magazine; never flashy, but wonderful tone and complemented the band sound rather than vice-versa. Saw them in '80 and his Yammy was just the same as yours. Wish I had something to trade........
  21. Also weapon of choice of the late John McGeogh - my fave guitarist of the last 30 years. Bump for a fabulous axe......
