1.
I liked the Sterling I had, it was very bright, punchy and aggressive - the neck was sublime and had a Jazz profile. It hung well in the mix and smelt of toffee (no kidding).
That bass really did smell of vanilla/toffee didn't it!
I came across Ed Friedland's (and that German guy who i cant understand and the Italian guy who had way too much low end but a nice jacket) video reviews of the Sterling by MM SB14 and SR34 and i must say, im impressed with the tone, more so the SB14 than the SR4 I think this may well be what im looking for. Although Ed reviewed both together i thought the SB14 sounded better and has more variation in tone. Also i believe it has a more Jazz like neck as opposed to the SR4 having a more P like one.
I'm glad you're going to actually go out and try these basses as it's a HUGE mistake to listen to someone else play them and imagine that's how they'd sound in your 'hands' (as that's where the main difference can lie). I've known people play my basses, through my gear, and still manage to get a completely different sound to the one that I get! Though I accept if you are listening to someone do an A/B between two basses then at least you can hear a difference between the two.
2. What does the whole bass weigh?
3.
So what does it all mean? How can I judge which amps and cabs will suit me? Do I simply pay as much as I can afford? Or do I spend the rest of my allotted three score years and ten trying out amp/cab combinations to the point of madness? A labour of love maybe, but I generally don't like music shops! Dammit - I'm not even sure which size of speakers I prefer! 8, 10, 12, 15 or 18 or any feasible combination of them...
Been there, done that and have in fact got the Basschat T-Shirt (honest)! It's not as if you have to go to shops and buy all the latest gear, then find it doesn't suit you (after which you take a massive resale depreciation)... simply buy from trusted Basschat members who have gone through or are going through the same minefield. There are years of fun trying to find what suits you, at not a huge depreciation in value!
4. Now if you had the matching SD Jazz pup to go with this we'd be talking... you don't do you?
5. In an 'ideal world', a bit more than you've just paid for it (so you should know that figure) BUT in the real world a bit less than you've just paid for it!
6. The other thread on this bass got me looking at the bass again... is it just me or is it a bit 'too' red and shiny for a Fender/Squier colour (and I assume that it is a white scratchplate painted that metallic colour)?
7. It appears that the guy with the silver sparkle bass has taken your advice... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...=STRK:MEWAX:VRI
8. Ooooh I have a James Trussart gig bag available... at that price I wonder if I can do a deal with the seller?
9.
warwick streamer std passive bass in wine red colour couple dings nothing major plays really nice want some new gear so has to go £350 open to offers and swaps alot of bass for the money showed as much detail of the dent on the horn as i could get with the camera any questions mail me
TBH mate if you are wanting 'that' kind of money for your bass you are really going to have to at least spell it correctly in the thread title!
10. Should the pup lugs be showing from underneath the bridge cover on a 70's Jazz (assuming it is fitted correctly and it looks pretty far back)... I'm no expert (and I'm always up for some education) but shouldn't the whole rear pup be under the cover; coincidentally, when did the rear pup get moved back even further in the 70's? Just asking!
11. So it's a 90's Squier... pretty sure I'd rather shell out a smidgen more and get one of the 'new' Squier basses!
12. I'll add my name to the growing list of those not convinced by neo loaded cabs (whether that be because of the driver/design/cab material). After several years in the wilderness trialling neo equipped EBS 2x12's, Tech Soundsystems 2x10/1x15/6x10/2x12 (the last one being the Tecamp Puma combo) I converted/reverted to the Aguilar DB12's... I came home; Ah bliss!
13.
I'm looking forward the the MB Fusion, though I expect it won't come cheap.
Soundslive appear to have one in stock @ £760. http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~G...550~ID~8309.asp
14. Anybody get this Antoria? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
15. It's not just Flea basses and I'm not sure that it's 'significantly' affected by the time of year. Just a couple weeks ago I watched a MM Sterling (not the new 'Ray' model but a proper one) go for £510 and it looked tasty, bar a ciggie burn at the headstock (assuming that is an old scar ); I also watched a very rare late 80's Ltd Ed NT Streamer bass go for £610... that went the second time listed after failing to get £600 the first time! However, I agree that a year ago that Flea would have been £1000 all day long.
16. Didn't someone post saying that they thought the Tecamp was powered by a modified 'Powersoft' unit?
17. Is there any routing under the pickguard, i.e. can the pickguard be removed without any ugly channels etc.?
18. The first picture that you have hosted (sighting up the neck) makes it look like you could drive a bus between the string and the fingerboard... what's the action 'really' like?
19.
Hi, During rehearsals i have just been plugging straight into the PA save carting my Cab around. Can i use my Head to Di to the PA in order to have more EQ control etc or will this damage the head being there are no cabs attached? Basicaly = Can i use the head without attaching a Cab? Thanks Justin.
So long as it is not a valve head that would be fine. A Solid State head can operate with no load and come to no harm.
20.
What some people have done on US Talkbass is "outed" slow suppliers: that could be an option to try and apply some pressure? Dr Bass cabs got very bad press on TB and they have held up their hands and acknowledged the issues and have brought in more staff to totally restructure the business.
I would agree; looking at my last post it looks very 'defeatist' (for want of a better description). However, I would suggest that you up your game considerably, contact paypal to look at the possibility of a refund and probably start a thread over on TB are some of the obvious ones. I can't see that waiting any longer will bring much benefit and will likely as not just drag this drama on even longer for you.
21. Not being funny but do you honestly think you'll get a positive result from this? I've followed your trials and tribulations and it seriously looks like the guy has your money and he knows you've now got no chance of getting a refund from paypal so he's simply washed his hands of you. I'd love to be proved wrong but the tale has all the signs of an unhappy end on your part. Saying that I wish you the best of luck.
22.

Is that there one of those 'Nash' basses?
23.
Hmmm... £399 seems a bit high to me, they were/are around that new. I got my 2002 MIM P of the bay for £250. I'd get one of the new ones, they can't be much more than that.
To buy a new MIM they are now £500ish
24. This might sound daft but does it come with the power supply and associated connector leads?
25. I've owned a range of GK amps and I still rate the 800RB as 'one' of my all time favourite amps... just sooooo wish they'd had the 100w amp operating at 4 ohms as well.
