It's not wrong, it's different. Unless you are trying to be a Black Crows Tribute, and even then I'm not sure that it matters much.
If the whole band play it "Perfectly" as per the CD then you might as well stick the CD on.
I experimented with an adjustable nut on my basses, but only to the extent of pushing a bit of galvalized wire under the strings next to the nut, so that it could be slid/angled as required.
Made a real difference to the intonation at the low end (bottom 3 or 4 frets), and after setting the intonation at the bridge has negligible affect elsewhere.
Didn't do anything permanent as I assumed that the required position would change with the strings fitted.
In princible a good idea.
However, use with care. These things are very hard and can snap quite easily the smaller ones. If it snaps off in the screw then you have a pice of hard steel down the hole that will not drill out!
Try is in conjuction with some heat from a soldering iron.
I was suprised whan I found out peoples nerves don't always follow the same route. In the situation we are talking about here that nerve sometimes goes round on the outside of the elbow, and in other people can go on the inside of the elbow.
I've never had it diagnosed, but I suspect that I have this. Mainly if I've been doing a lot of DIY sort of stuff. never had it after playing bass though.
All basses, but especially 5 strings, should have graded ratios on the tuners. Ie the lower the note the higher the tuner ratio. It would make tuning those low notes a lot easier. Much less "'Shit, too far', start again"
