I remember I said something very similar on here when Jade Goody died. Wasn't long before I had villagers with flaming torches at my door, looking for my head.

Yup. Running With The Devil (still my fave VH track to this day) got some air play when the album was released and, after hearing that, I bought the album. As you say, first listening, not expecting it. Kaboom. My only caveat to the whole of this was I don't think he was a very nice person but that is a whole other can of beans and doesn't detract from his place in history.

I had a major hissy fit with a band once 😄 We were playing the birthday party of a friend of the singers. I asked if were could enjoy the buffet as well as the guests and was told categorically that we could. I get very grumpy when hungry, worth a mention. So we got set up and sound checked and I asked when we were going to eat as the gig kick-off time was rapidly approaching. Singer said I should have eaten before as the buffet was off limits. This led to some raised voices and finger pointing. As I recall I ended up threatening to throw the singer off the fire escape stairs 🤣 Always an idle threat because of the state of my back and the fact that he must have weighed 17 stone. Unsurprisingly that was our last gig. Of course it was never about the food, it was all the tensions that had been simmering over the past year or so due to the singer increasingly believing we were 'his' band.

Sad news. It is hard to overstate the impact he made on guitar playing, just that one track 'Eruption' caused a paradigm shift in the possibilities. It is imo also hard to look back and appreciate it as it is impossible to 'unhear' all those who followed - Vai, Satch, Malmsteen et al, but at the time what he did was just a quantum leap different to anything else. Total gamechanger. And he did it all so effortlessly with a huge smile on his face.

If you want 'punchy' these are Mike Tyson.

Agreed re Limehouse Lizzy, they absolutely nail the sound and attitude. The lefty guitarist does my head in - he has a lefty guitar strung for a right hander so the low E is at the bottom and plays upside down.

Deep glossy solid piano black is always my personal choice. BWB scratchplate or none if the gubbins is attacked via the rear. My second choice is aged white - that lovely clotted cream colour that old white basses get. Nice WBW scratchplate. Yum.

Absolutely this. Probably still my favourite album after all this time. Another cracker was Humble Pie: Performance Rockin' The Fillmore. Raw and energetic. I saw them live at the Kursaal at Southend around this time and they were just SO good, albeit playing a disappointingly short set..

I love the tone of this bass. Woody and organic, it is everything I imagine a P bass with flats should sound like.
