1. BGM's got a lot better looking recently but it's still an un-inspiring read and lacking a bit, editorially. They need to get away from doing long drawn out Q+As with players people have never heard of/care about and work up some better editorial features. It needs a bit of attitude in the writing too; a sense of humour, a sense of fun. It still feels a bit cut and paste - esp the news section. The reviews also need a bit of edge to them, it's boring to read 10 paragraphs listing the features on a bass, when I can see what it does by looking at the picture. Tell me if it's any good, if you took it to a gig and got laughed at or got compliments on it, show me how it fits in the back of a hatchback (or doesn't) etc etc. Take a look at What Car - it's a good example of how to make something samey (new car reviews) sound interesting every month.
 2.
As long as the bridge works and looks ok - I'd keep it - brass and meaty. If it's tarnished you can clean them up a treat with metal polish.
..and if you ever want to sell it on, it will look better with the original on it.
 3. Usually to free up a hand to adjust the mixer or press the button on the smoke machine. Oh the joy of being in a cover band...
 4. Looks like you're going to have a good weekend - shame it's so far north! Enjoy...
 5.
Is it likely to really be in D but played detuned by a semitone to get more open strings? Doesn't seem the easiest key when using standard tuning.
Yep, he plays a lot of the songs on a detuned (by half step) bass. Says he does it becuase Brandon Flowers writes a lot of stuff in Eb. That what he told me once, anyway...
 6. This does what a Stingray does. And more. (...and it's lighter and cheaper...)
 7. Hi welcome - check out the Hartke LH500 amp head for starters. Very popular around here.
 8.
I think it's the romance of an old Fender. But they don't often deliver on the dream I imagine. I've played a few, they were all mediocre, one in particular was a hideous natural wood Jazz from the '70s. It weighed a bloody ton, sounded ordinary, played like sh*te.
+1. While they look nice I 've yet to find one I could actually gig with. But each to their own.
 9.
I have never found PBasses to be sexy........... until now....
+1
 10. Phil, that's a real p1ss3r. Sorry to hear that. Sounds like I need to come over to Newbury and take you out for a pint! Drop me a PM.

 12.
Audience? I sometimes have a look around, but its hard spotting them sometimes.
13.
I used DPD recently to ship a bass to Germany and they were excellent..well priced too!
+1
 14.
are they worth the extra money? I was thinking of putting one on my next bass.
They add a bit of something - as do the Gotohs (which are easier to fit). But no punter will ever notice!
 15.
I've just checked with voxpop (next on the list after me) and he has asked me to remove him from the list so I guess that if no one has any major objections, I can pass it on to Stingrayfan.
Thanks - have rejigged the list as below. 16. Amazed this is still here - these are £600 new these days and great gigging basses.
 17.
sh*t! my bad, with everything that has gone on I completely forgot! A thousand apologies for holding the line up
Happy to take this after PhilTheBassist. Not gigging till December, so that might work?
 18. Check out Hartke ones. Half the price of Ernie Balls and I struggle to tell the difference. They may actually be better...
 19. Bit of a soul destroying one at a south London pub last night. Big pub, half empty - no atmos. Even The Beatles would have struggled. Wondered half-way through if it had been worth putting the stuff in the car! On the upside, had a great sound (G&L and Hartke amp working really well together), we played well (did some great locking in the with the drummer) and we got compliments afterwards including from another bassist. But last time for that venue, me thinks....
 20. Love the energy in this - bass sounds good too.
 21. Aaargh! This is the bass I lusted after when I was 15. Ended up with the natural one because it was cheaper. Must resist.
 22.
That's what me and Walman said! And it plays like a dream too...
It's sublime to play. If I had the spare cash etc etc.....
MB1. ....More Decking spotted in Portsmouth!
23.
I need to get 16 people (14 musicians and 2 sound guys/crew) instruments and PA/lighting rig etc to Germany and back in one piece.
Good luck with that one...! Double your normal fee I'd say - if everyone's on double bubble, they'll be happy!
 24.
Also, the drummer does not drive and does not have a drum kit and so, in the past, we have had to hire a drum kit when headlining or rehearsing somewhere with no kit.
He's committed to the band though - he's bought his own sticks! Walk away. It doesn't sound like much fun.
 25. The Rumble 100s are great, I used to have one and would recommend them. If you're only going to ever do rehearsals and maybe a gig with a quiet drummer, it'll do fine. But you may be better off thinking of something with a bit more juice. You may not use it now but you will in the future and it will save you losing money in the long run. See if you can find a s/h Trace Elliot 1x15 - that will cover you for mose situations I reckon. Mine's great for most pub gigs.
