1. For me, it depends on the charity involved. There are some for whom I would play for free every month if they asked me, and others I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. At the end of the day (stock phrase, arrgh sorry) it's always a personal choice and nothing to do with an inability to get paying gigs.
 2.
You really compare a new U2 album with a party political broadcast, that's kind of a strange analogy
What with Bonio's habit of being a preachy lecturing old bore, I think it's a pretty close comparison
 3. ^^ What he said
 4. How would you feel if you awoke one morning to find that a video of a party political broadcast by someone you detested (BNP for example, other parties are available) had been added to your iTunes/iPod without your knowledge or consent?
 5.
As for Stonehenge, I have immensely fond memories of family summer holidays in the 60s, leaving London at the crack of dawn for the drive down to the West Country and stopping off at Stonehenge for a breakfast and rest break. In those days there was nothing there except the stones and breakfast was foil-wrapped sandwiches and coffee from a flask that mum had made before we left, which we would eat while sitting on the unfenced stones before running around and climbing all over them after our early morning refuelling. Happy days, but now no longer possible in the wake of queuing, fences, admission fees, visitor centres and cappucino's from gurgly machines
Oh man, you did that too? It was great, wasn't it? It was the early 70s for me, but the M4 was just a building site and the 'henge was still as open as you remember it. The journey took forever but it felt like more of an adventure because of it. Going to Dawlish felt like travelling halfway round the world. I know it's a crappy hackneyed old saying, but those really were the days. *massive wistful sigh* Sorry, back on topic.
 6. Cool! Happy tweaking I love this sort of tinkering.
 7. Is this any good for your needs..?
 8.
I want to part on good terms, smooth the transition if they look for a replacement bassist and still be talking to them at the end of the process, since they've been friends since before this band existed.
Cool. If they're real friends they will understand. Good luck

 10.
They have the idea that we must accept gigs wherever possible no matter whether the whole band can make it. Although our few paid gigs make us less than minimum wage and many don't even cover expenses, the singer and guitarist seem quite convinced that this is professionalism.
What? Good god no. It's desperation.
My idea of professionalism for the type of gigs we do is presenting a good quality, consistent sound at every gig and not accepting gigs unless we can do that.
Yet again, the bassist is the sole voice of reason and sense in the band Have you told them this? If so, did they pooh-pooh it?
I've asked everybody if we can meet up for a chat. Wish me luck!
Do you want luck in changing their minds, or luck in getting a painless divorce from them?
 11.
I'm married. Keep the bass
12. Is comparing a G-B Shuttle to an OBT not rather like comparing an apple to an orange (if you pardon the pun)?
 13.
Anyway, as this is a bass forum, can it be a band without bass???
No, it can't. And anyone who mentions White Stripes will be smeared in honey and pegged out over an ants' nest.
 14.
extremley unreasonable of them given that you explained your family circumstances and if they are not prepared to accept that there are some things in life that take priority over bands and gigs then fully agree with everybody else in that its time to find/start a new band
This and...
If any band thought so little of my contribution that they were happy to play without me then I'd be off like a shot. It boils my piss that the bass - in my opinion a fundamental and essential element in so many different types of music - can be regarded as an optional extra by 'musicians' who think that what they do is so much more important. So given that, and the fact they're not exactly being sympathetic to your non-band situation, I'd blow them right out.
...this. In other words -- those boots are made for walking, and that's just what they should do. Mine would IIWM. I agree with Phil Starr that a dramatic flounce is not called for, just a quiet "we obviously have different priorities, so I wish you all the best".
 15. If he reckons it's worth 900 sheets, tell him to list it on fleabay for that much and see if it sells. It won't
 16.
Talking Heads, Naked. And getting back to the rules, here's one with the title track omitted (again taken from yesterday's listening) *Title Track* The Line Devotion to a Dream Halfway to the Moon Winterqueen Sing Monica 555 Waiting All Night Wombat Wingsuit
Fuego, Phish Here's mine: Phenomenon Choices Falling Away Fragmentation Echoes of Life Round and Round Avalon *title track* (Parts 1-3) Do Unto Them New Beginning Echoes of Life
 17.
Another reason to go Android IMO.
Yup. I'm happy to report that my Xperia is and will remain blissfully U2-free
 18.
I shall not let them dampen my spirits
Never fear, I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to do that for you by telling us how ugly Wals are. It won't be me though, I think it's gorgeous and I am very very very very very jealous
 19. Two at the moment, although it's feeling a bit like one too many.
 20.
+ The Wiliam Hardwicke in Bognor have cancelled all future band bookings (including two of ours) and stopped live music as "Our Customers prefer DJ sets and recorded music"
Rough translation: "We find DJs and jukeboxes are cheaper."
 21.
the Japanese rock band Vow Wow
Aw man, they were a hell of a band. I saw them at a small venue in Reading back in 1986 pre-Murray, they tore the roof off. Their bassman at the time was Kenji, he had a great image -- black combat gear, red beret & mirror shades, giving it some in a Harris-galloping-fingerstylee on a (IIRC) Yamaha BB of some sort. Damn fine band. Sorry, back on topic. My 'which band and when' is It Bites on the Once Around The World tour.
 22.
'Dakota' by Stereophonics... Boring as they come and the only song in the covers set that I actually hate and would love to never hear again. Tiny variations but essentially just root note playing.
I think quite a lot of Stereophonics stuff has strictly root note basslines. 'Have A Nice Day' was playing on the radio this morning and it sounded like a candidate to me.
 23.
What a strange lot you all are
You've only just realised?
