  1. The business is dead mate, but that means the 'business' is YOURS. There's never been greater access to the means of production, but also music has never been so ubiquitous and devalued. The thing that's for sale now is scarcity, which means 'your thing'. Build a following for what you do and get it to finance you, and write as much stuff as you can for the sync industry because there's loads of money in residuals from that. Recording is advertising, live shows are again the scarcity because they're limited availability. Connections are connections, they're built over a lifetime, but have to start somewhere. The kids from my year are spread across the world now. Meeting people kick starts things and then the meeting people hopefully won't ever stop. But having people to call on, collaborate with or who will throw opportunities your way is invaluable. Reputations are built and there's equal parts effort, luck and talent in success. Good luck what ever you do.
  2. I flipping hated music school, but on the other hand I'm a weird character and I learned a complete BUCKETLOAD and I have zero regrets about going. The networking is invaluable, or just increasing your chances of being in the right place at the right time and whatnot. Learn the BUSINESS as much as if not more than your instrument, as many aspects of it as you can. I work in IT obviously, just because it's so much lazier work than working for a living like what musicians have to. Hopefully you're minted and have family to fall back on because I only had to pay for one year, 4 makes me feel a little sweaty
  3. I Wish, that's in E flat right? Do I need to detune everything a half step, just the E or shut up and this is played on a 5 you idiot, or am I tone deaf?

      I blagged my way to ATCL by guessing at the interval detecting test :/

      THEY'RE ALL MINOR FOURTHS WHEN I'M DONE WITH THEM, and we tune toms in 3rds, not fourths, etc.

      I play this in Eb without tuning down, but I have big hands so I would be doing that Bb at 6 on the E string rather than 1 on the A, just saying. 

      Index 2, middle 4 and pinky 6

  4. Bass a bit tricky for the next day or so since my mixer is out of its tin and getting a good going over with cleaner and some tiny rags to get the snot and soot out. It would be rather nice to not loose a channel once in a while, since it doesn't half put one off ones chops :P

      Mixer back together and working much much better, hurrah. Bass broke though a bit, I need to make a metal plate to support the inside of the cavity where the nut holding in the jack socket has nibbled the wood.

  5. I have started learning Forever by Haim, and omfg if this is grade 4 Trinity then I can't imagine getting much higher than this. I'd thought rhythms would come over easy from drums but this is taking some TIME to bed in the feel.

      I don’t know it. A friend of mine who’s a drum tutor was saying a few days ago about the new drum syllabus. I think the grade 4 has a Snarky Puppy song.

      Just keep at it, it's a fun song to play, we all struggle on some songs and then they suddenly click into place and we wonder why we struggled. It's what makes us better players. Now can I persuade my band to play it......

      Is music doing the same thing as extreme sports? you need an inverted tailwhip 900 just to be average these days? Snarky Puppy... heh I might have to get the book and learn that myself.

  7. I will delete this later to avoid bible bloat, this is not the gospel according to caitlin, but what do we do about limiting? I don't want feedback blowing my already ragged ears out. I've never been able to find any info about anything in the pack driving the iems having any actual protection in them.

Hmm, rolling on the E is a nice swelling thing, but I notice rolling on the A everything sounds choked off, I realise that this is the percussive noise of my fingers then landing on the E, shifting my thumb to the E and rolling on the A gets it sounding like the E. Am I solving my own problem correctly, or is there something I'm not getting? Any string higher than A this won't work because I can't generate the angle without leaving un-muted strings. perhaps I should be using a pick? :P

      Happy Jack, the headphone hole would presumably connect it to some headphones and the DI hole would presumably connected it to my home studio.

      As a later assumption, I could make, buy, or steal a cab and plug it into that.

      Mostly I'd try and get it in my pocket though and say 'oooooooh greeeeen' at it a lot.

      What's different about a real TE?

      It's a tidgey class-D amp designed to be lightweight and portable; suitable for practice or small venues.

      The old/mainstream/vintage TE kit was big and bold, size & weight no issue; there always seemed to be a bigger one available if you needed to upsize!

  15. Turn up, best gear, best polish, play the best you possibly can, rock your face off and take the drummer's partner home with you and hopefully get a gig off one of the other acts on the night.
  16. it's going to end up being like sucking the poison out of a bite isn't it? ynom nyom nyom. The electronics are permanently in there right? my ACS plugs filters pop out for a good sluicing but i expect this isnt an option. What does the manual say? would light warming melt the grot out?
  17. What's the history of the fault? did it stop working whilst being played? Has it been dropped? Is this a cold start issue? When was it last used successfully? Fault doesn't care when your gig is, it's just using physics to annoy you. If the fuse has gone for any reason other than violence then there's probably a fault that could end your show half way through even if replacing it makes it work for a bit. If it does get it working take a pocketfull on saturday. DO NOT BYPASS THE FUSE you will kill yourself and everyone else at the show.

Everything needs to be bolted to the slab, the SLAB can be isolated Isolating drums is a fools errand, embrace you inner animal and deal with for the short time before the drummist is flipping knackered
  19. I very very nearly went all out on the earth vs the wildhearts tour smiley kit when it was up on ebay, still kind of regret passing it up.

I have had yamaha rubber kits (they bend if you hit them hard) and currently rock a Roland TD30K I would definitely say go mesh if you possibly can, but anything name brand is better than import stuff. I'd concur with second user over new, you'll get SO SO much more for your money. Consider fewer objects to hit if you can get better quality objects, drum kits are infinitely upgradable over time. As skidder652003 says, resale value is something to consider because nicer instruments are nicer and you can't have as many drum kits as you can guitars. I've topped out at one electric and one accoustic drum kit, but i've got 3 guitars and I can't play any of *them* 😛 Also bad luck if she keeps up with it, I have lost more money and time and backache to drums than I ever want to think back on Oh don't forget the extra junk, drum sticks, seat, bass drum pedal, hihat stand, HEADPHONES, often times those things aren't included.

  22. Gert Lush! Sax is the one instrument I'm BANNED from taking up. Oddly enough I'm even allowed a banjo if I could ever dare afford one, but sax? NON!

      Cheers for the feedback. I don't remotely have the feel of the original, I know that and I'm working on the 'bounce' of it, I lose most of that when the red light comes on, annoying because i don't suffer the same with drums.

      My process is in Logic Pro, I cycle a 2 or 4 bar loop and try and nail the pattern, I do that for the major grooves. Then I go back and look at the 'widdly bits' and loop over those. Lastly I loop over the section changes because hitting the next groove without a wobble whilst playing the passing tones makes me stumble.

      That clever human said it best: amateurs practise till they get it right, professionals practise till they don't get it wrong :)

      Seems you are working at the other extreme of trying to perfect it in micro amounts. If you were to apply the *doing it in slightly larger sections* process, then the feel will develop a lot more easily. It will be near impossible to get a groove going doing it in such tiny chunks. Maybe forget doing the actual recording process for the moment might take the pressure off?. Maybe someone else might come along to give better advice though ! 👍

      Yeh, I think I'm a bit plagued by being a drummer, most of my stuff DOES loop every two bars :P It's a time period that makes sense, I get a bit 'lost' in a 12 bar phrase of where it's up to, or it feels like forever till the 'start' comes around again.

      Thanks for the advice, it's certainly something to try. I won't know what works till I give it a go.

      The recording is because I'm shy and scared and if I wait till I'm 'ready' then I'll never do it ever.

I got mine by accident, I was one of those groady reselling stuff people sold for the rent money shops and I was certainly NOT looking for any kind of musical instrument, but it was on the wall and it was blue and then it was mine. I'm still surprised that it happened because I couldn't afford it, but I'm quite happy.
  25. oof, imagine if someone headed off a bit quick on 'one week' by the BNL? I don't know why so many humans find this so hard. Last time I was in the studio the drums were done in single takes. Dunno how I'm so good at it tbh. Anyone need a drummer who's not rubbish? unimaginative, like. But not rubbish. The only thing I can't do is accurately predict when the electric toothbrush wants me to change quadrants before it buzzes IF I'm playing rock music whilst cleaning my teeth.
