  1. Passive has usually nice low cut close to very low frequencies. Some passive are not very functional with hard impedances, like with piezos. Active needs always power, internal or external. Internal may be a 9 volt battery or some power supply included. Some boxes eat external power like Phantom from the mixer. You need to check the owner's manuals. If the box has very big input impedance, it eats piezos as a breakfast.
  2. Durability. My Countryman type 85 would probably survive, when rats and cockroaches do not. Most of the boxes I have seen are designed to harsh environments, like for gigging bassists. If the box has a switch for two different signal levels, that is a nice, optional extra.
  3. Try this: http://www.daddario.com/upload/tension_chart_13934.pdf
  4. I have had lots of issues with my hands, as I rode a road bike in my youth. No gloves in the spring time. Now my hands are cold, if the temp is below 25. I use wool gloves even during sleep. One thing is to take care of the wrist area and the hand muscles. Both need some exercise. It is not so uncommon to fill hand muscles with lactate. Warm up, and if it is not enough, visit a manipulator. By the way: White sugar is really bad for my wrists. No exercise and lots of sweet food make my hands hurt.
  5. To clarify my previous comment, I downright love his music and playing. I even had a chance to see him playing live maybe two, three times. The bands were so tight and at the same time so relaxed. The just played! Bass General is one main reasons I still play. I covered some song of his while applying to a music school in my late teens and got in. Now, I am far away from his level but his playing made me try to develop and reach for more. His son, Verneri Pohjola is also an honored musician. Fathers and sons...
  6. The late Bass General did lots of progressive and somewhat complicated music, but his compositions include fun stuff, too.

  8. Not good. A young Audi boy drove over my old Alfa 33 while I was driving to the gig. My playing sucked, as I was thinking, what happened and how much this gig will cost. Oh dear. But the ladies were wearing shiny stockings and my dear bass sang some nice stuff. I shouldn't feel too bad.
  9. Well, if you check the serial at the bottom end of the neck, close to the strap pin, you can use the list. The list can be found from Vigier's web pages. My Passions were born 1988 and 1989, so young girls.
  10. Wow, a 5! Which year? 1990 or so?
  11. Thank you @Hellzero There are few fully active, but a complete list might be good. John East & EMG BTS. bartolini has only AG2BP & MPB1 that I know of and have two channels. Kubicki, WAL, Zon?
  12. @jrixn1 answered this, but once more. If the preamp module was active from start to beginning (vol, blend, bass, treble...), the bass would be muted without an energy source (battery). I am pretty sure that your bass has only active tone control, so vol and blend are passive (high impedance), that is simple potentiometers without electronic buffers. Active tone equals amplification of the signal, as the tone shaping would otherwise mean only reduction of certain frequencies. Active tone can amplify AND attenuate the signal. This is why preamps need an energy source (usually a 9 V battery). Passive tone can only reduce the signal level. If the bass has a true active preamp (practically a mixer), it should cover all adjustments: blend, vol, tone controls. These are somewhat rare, but there are few from EMG, and John East.
  13. Now the discussion is about a bass that has a bolt-on neck. If the neck is good, the body only has to be stable. That's it. Probably the paint has as much to do with the sound as the body. @ped had the meaningful comment about the weight. My choice would be the lighter one. But that's me. I just don't happen to like bodies with too much fat.
  14. If you have a DMM, put the wires to the 1st coil & hit it with a screwdriver. If the voltage goes up, the coil is in phase.
  15. No no sir, this is something else. Pics do not represent the feel.
  16. Well, I can say that Stax makes fine, or better, somewhat expensive headphones, but they are different. I had a transistor amp for them, and the sound was close to decent. I changed to a tube/valve amp and now the sound simply shines. I can not recommend them wholeheartedly, as the original owner practically hated them. I have tried AKG K240 and they just sound bad, although that pair is somewhat common. Any of those rap-star brands have been plain lousy, too. I have tried to be as objective as possible, but this area is just so personal. OK: DT770 80 ohms. Decent price, decent sound.
  17. I did an investment to my playing. I bought my dream neck, that has 5 strings and that magical 19 mm string spacing. It takes time to master the fretboard but the feel is at home. At last. I can publicly thank this gentleman, @graham1945 , who passed this black beauty to me. Her official name is Modulus Graphite Genesis 5, born 1999.
  18. 40 = 4.0" width and DC = dual coil. Just in case someone is interested in this data.
  19. EMG width is related to those type numbers: 35 = 3.5", 40 = 4.0", and 45 equals...
  20. This question is just like asking, what is the best bicycle saddle. Those who have ridden a lot, do understand this point. No. Not a single one. This is so personal, so go to a store and try as many as possible. Choose the pair that feels and sounds most suitable for you. Remeber to use the music, the song that you know very well. I like Stax, but your preference is certainly different.
  21. No sir, I just added a material option. As your system is FDM, ABS is certainly fine.
  22. If ABS is soft, use some PA with 40 - 60 % GF and it certainly will not bend. I used to be in a company that produced plastic things out of PA with lots of GF. Those ones with high fiber content tend to sound like glass. Of course you can consider some wave, or box like shape to the plate and make it far more tough to bend. Italian alusonic produces basses with (partial) aluminum body.
  23. Someone has used an XLR connector between the amp anf the cab, or an output to DI-box, or a parallel output.
  24. This is very easy. If your pedal needs 1200 mA (1.2 A), 500 mA is not enough. Far from it.
  25. Take a look at the wires. One wire goes to the upper element. Then another goes downwards to the lower element. The third wire goes back to the amp. This is called series. You sum the ohms together (8 + 8 = 16 ohms). Very easy. Now, the speaker can handle up to 300 + 300 watts. So you have two similar speakers, but one amp. Your amp probably has two 8 ohm outputs. When two sixteen ohm speakers (the complete boxes with elements inside) are put to the single output (with two parallel sockets), they are parallel from the amp point of view. So the amp sees one 8 ohm impedance (1/(1/16 + 1/16) = 1/(2/16) = 16/2 = 8 ohms) and you can push up to 4 x 300 watts of power to the system. Enough? Clear? It is quite common, that a transistor based power amp is not so accurate with impedances, especially big ones (>4 ohms). Most of them do not even need the cab. Valve/tube power amps tend to like some load in their outputs, so it is better to have a 5 inch nail in the output than nothing at all. These are just basics, and there are many exceptions, so always keep a load in your amp's output, if you even think about connecting the unit to the 230 volt line. And use quality cables.
