  1. Yeah it does get rather tedious. But what I find even more annoying is when you're watching a review and all they do is play chords at the top end of the neck. It's a bass you pillock! We want to hear what the low notes sound like.
  2. I've got both. The Gretsch utterly trounces the Jag. The active bass boost circuit on the Jag is muddy, boomy and horrible, with a lot of messing around, and trial and error, you can just about get a workable sound from it. The neck is nice and it actually plays ok with a bit of setting up. The problem is you won't have it for long before you feel like you need to upgrade it. I'm currently trying to decide whether to put some new pickups and electronics in and do away with the bass boost circuit, and maybe add a high mass bridge to make it a viable instrument, or just get rid. I can never quite get over the poor man's Fender feel of the Squier. The Gretsch on the other hand is superb straight out of the box. The build quality is astounding considering the price. It should be at least twice the price it retails at, and even then it would be a steal. If you absolutely need that Precision or Jazz sound then go for the Jag. If you want a well made instrument with it own sound then get the Gretsch. If it's good enough for Royal Blood and twenty thousand people at Glastonbury then it'll do for me.
  3. Some great stories on here. I've really enjoyed reading the thread, but it just goes to highlight for me how lucky I am to be in a band with mates. No egos, no delusions. We know we're shyte but enjoy it immensely.
  4. Not to mention they really know what they're doing with their knobs.
  5. Yup. Pointless!
  6. A £300 Squier and spend the rest on beer and loose women. Seriously! What's the point in spending 3 grand on a bass?
  7. Must have been a flurry of last minute bidding. It was £80 when I posted. Still a good buy at £250 though I reckon.
  8. It was actually an 8 pint beauty. I bought it in a drunken stupor because I thought it looked pretty through my beer goggles, then the next morning I thought "what have I done?" and just felt dirty. (We've all been there right?) I generally can't stand Fenders and Fender style guitars. They're just bland and a bit meh. The Jag is a little bit more interesting looking than most but it still has that headstock that even the elephant man's mother couldn't love. I am growing accustomed to it, like an ugly wife with a nice personality. But I don't think I'll ever love it. I much prefer these two. Weirdly I don't really have a thing for sunburst either. It's just coincidental that everything I've fancied at the right price happens to have been in that colour, so I have a matching set. Also coincidentally, short, medium and long scale. Semi acoustic, passive, and active. So I think I've covered all my basses (pardon the pun).
  9. If it's not 4-5 blokes with long hair and tight trousers it's not music. 😋
  10. There is a rather uninteresting story behind that, but here goes anyway. I wanted to flip the grill on one of my cabs to make the Wharfdale "W" an "M" and get my initials "MW". I couldn't do it on the 2x10 because the grill bends under at the bottom where it's ported. So I flipped the 15 instead and put it on top just to see what it would look like. Then I decided I just liked it better that way around. Contrary to what logic might dictate, the 2x10 is actually more bassy than the 1x15 due to the larger overall surface area, and the horn in the 2x10 is angled upwards so it's designed to sit on the floor and send the high end upwards towards the players ears. It just works better that way around. At least to my ears.
  11. Doing it on the cheap can look and sound sweet too!
  12. Yeah and to be fair, electrics are the easiest problem to fix.
  13. Or an actual snake. That'll keep the punters away from the stage.
  14. I remember the rubber stuff we used to have at school. Like the plastic stuff above but heavy duty rubber on a roll. That was pretty good. It looks like they still sell it. Just put "rubber cable cover" in eBay.
  15. Looks interesting though don't you think? Apparently Framus is now part of Warwick. I think I'd be really tempted if I was in the UK. Unfortunately it looks like shipping is a no go.
  16. I don't need another project! I don't need another project! I don't need another project! I don't need another project! I don't need another project! (Keep repeating until the pretty bass goes away) https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F153346598106
  17. My singing and playing are about on parr. Absolutely shyte at both. Doing the two together? There's more chance of me coming up with a viable method of cold fusion.
  18. Fender AB-Y would do the job and also give you the option to run the Cajon and Bass simultaneously should your ever need to. They can be picked up for around £20 and they're very sturdy and well made. I use one to switch between basses. Edit Although it looks like the one you posted would be just the job because it looks like it has adjustable volumes.
  19. Brilliant. Thanks Jack. Much appreciated. I'll sit back and enjoy the light show then. It does look very pretty all lit up.
  20. I've given the Veyron a good going over today. It took a bit of messing to find the sound I wanted, to be fair most of that was down to trying to tame the bass boost circuit on my Jag. But oh my God it sounds absolutely amazing! For the first time probably ever I'm 100 percent happy with the sound I'm getting, and I finally get the P bass thing. Switching between the P's and J on the Jag they both sound totally different and both superb without having to touch the amp again. I've had the same issues that were mentioned earlier in the thread with the input / preamp clipping light coming on, but it's only intermittent when I dig in and I can't hear any distortion or anything untoward. Even with the the gain all the way off the light still flashes. I can solve the problem by engaging the -15 decibel button, but it sounds much better without it so I'm tempted to just leave it. Is anyone else running with the clip light occasionally flashing? Is it likely to cause me any problems or damage?
  21. I've had I've had a proper chance to play around with the Veyron today thorough the cabs and for probably the first time ever I'm totally happy with my sound. It just sounds epic!
  22. That's just one of the Riddlers playing a violin.
  23. Brilliant explanation of the difference between valve and solid state amps. Thanks. I've got one of those Mossfed amps. I think they're organic.
