1. I saw this, he quoted to have lessons by Mr Karn. He maybe right but Mick often said he couldn't think of anything worse than teaching someone else to play as he didn't have the patience or the technique!? Mind you, the signature looked gen. I have an old programme from his sculptures display back in 82 and looked just the same... I'll offer him a ton and get it repaired ;o)
2. One of the young uns I teach Bass to is doing very well and his father has agreed he can upgrade his current bass, he has a bottom of the range Squier P. The son wants a Full blown Ray but his father is a little more realistic with costs, as at 14, he may just give it up in a year or two so his budget is £450/500. He asked me what I though and I gave it a little thought before recommending either a G&L or possibly a SUB I have said I will have a lookout for something that may suit - any thoughts?
3. Is this forum not called Basschat? For me it's just curiosity nothing more sinister...
4. Welcome aboard matey, I have a horrible feeling that you may get inundated with techie questions So I'll ask an easy one; I was a big fan of Icehouse and seem to recall you joined Iva and the gang in time for the Primitive Man tour, what was your main weapon of choice for the tour? I seem to have a memory of you playing an Aria Pro or am I mistaken?
5. Assume your bass is lined? If not or possible even if it is begin by treating it exactly like a fretted, this will give you a feel for 'where you are' before you catch the slidings bug. Listen to other players and watch their styles if possible, but getting your own style is key - you tube has many excellent fretless players with beginners lessons. Players of note: Mark Egan, Mick Karn, Tony Franklin, Pino Palladino (Gary Numan/Paul Young), Jaco Pastorius
6. I was essentially trying to put him off as I realized he was a chancer, my point is really people randomly asking about your equipment then asking laughable prices and becoming aggressive when you clearly know what it is you have and it's worth
7. Has anyone ever had someone mail you about one of your Basses and request a selling price, despite you stating not for sale they keep pressing so you state a price then they state that's far too much and you'll go elsewhere - why ask then I never stated it was for sale!!!! I keep getting mails about my Travis Bean Fretless from Mick Karn wannabees, it took me 10 years to track one down then I am expected to consider a few hundred for it....... Please tell me I am not the only one chaps and chapesses! This is doubley annoying as 1 offering peanuts for an instrument that is very rare and then becoming annoyed that I realise it's worth!
8. For anyone that has been on here a few years it has changed a lot. I honestly believe for whatever reason that the general atmosphere has becoming a little negative, I have posted some very personal things on here in the past and have had some really supportive responses including PM's that really lifted me when I was going through a personal trauma. I think £20 is nothing compared to the quality of the website and where can you sell your gear without a whopping great charge, if people don't like it off to E-Bay with you!
9. Pretty sure Wal would sell you the PUPS and electronics but probably damn expensive! I have owned 2 and they are wonderful but not in my opinion worth £3k second hand nor £4/5k new.
10. Very sad, a real inovater and the X Factor was a wonderful Bass.
11. Just seen the funniest thing on you tube, the great ex- Simple Minds/Propaganda bassist has a couple of clips where he is helping us mere mortals play some of his lines, some joker puts a comment on saying that if he (Derek) knew anything about Simple Minds he wouldn't play it this way! lmao - Dereks response is classic, if you care to look the clip is Derek Forbes - I Travel...
12. I remember back in the day John Taylor stating he didn't actually like playing the bass, well he certainly influenced a lot of future players - myself included. Reminds me of rumors of one Martin Kemp and the first Spandau Ballet album although he admits his brother basically sat down with him a taught him the lines. He is not a bad player, a mate of mine used to work in Denmark Street in the early ninties and Kemp came in and tried a Jazz - apparently he was rather good.
13. I have heard rumours about My Taylor and his playing on the first two Duran Duran Albums. If you read Guy Pratt's biography he mentions him laying down Bass lines and Mr Taylor playing 'bass by numbers' I so don't want that to be true as he was a hero of mine aged 16 - I also read that Andy Taylor came up with the bass lines but hey he looked bloody good with that Aria!!
14. Owned a Dunn which was upgraded with active circuit and was lovely, really warm tones or nice 'n' snarly they compare very well with US Fender's. The US version of these basses surpasses Fenders in my opinion but has a price to match.
15. Derek Forbes, Mick Karn, Chris Squire and Bruce Foxton.
16. Hi, Legendary Epiphone Casino for sale, a wonderful semi acoustic played by the likes of John Lennon, Paul weller etc. Lovely Jangly tones and not an instrument I want to lose but having recently purchased my dream Ricky 360 this beautiful babe has to go. Excellent condtion, one small scratch mark to the back but other than that lovely. (Visible in Pic) In a rare black finish with original hardcase. I am looking for £350 plus courier costs. Pictures to follow....
