That's come out really nice! Apart from the odd spacing of the controls & no graphite neck/body strip on show, you could mistake it for the real thing!
Cheers. Yeah, the control spacing I didn't notice that for a while and we even thought of spraying the centre black when it was being built but I wanted it to still be its own bass and the maple is lovely. It cost me £600, I use to pay £25 every Friday evening after work and Keith would show me what he had done. It took almost a year to build but if I'd have waited 15 years I could have had a real Status when they finally started making lefties. The next bass on my list is a King Bass. Tell me O.T.P.J. has the neck profile changed between the Series II and S2 Classic and is the King Bass different again?
i've got lots of heavy and fairly old gear, but if you like vintage then have a look at this: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=21398 cheers ben
Hi Ben are you going to post any pics or prices for your gear? -
I remember seeing the Thumb bass way back when it was first introduced by the Bass Centre and was blown away by how it looked. Over 20 years later and it still has the same effect. That's a stunning bass my friend and looks a minter, all thanks to Mr W.

Good luck mate, do us all a favour and send some photos when it's finished, or better still, as you are making it. You can post it in the build diaries section. Have fun and spank that plank.

Scratch the date on the battery so you know when you last changed them. You should get at least 3 months out of a Duracell, cheap ones die within days sometimes.
Where did you find it? I've not seen many on ebay, so I'm guessin Rare&Vintage is probably the best place to find em? FWIW here's my rig...sorry about the camera quality! Its a HA5500 with VX215&410 cabs (I know most people slate the VX series, but I've not had any problems!) and my pride and joy SR5 apologies for the orientation of the shots, I dunno why that happened!
That's a cool rig. Is the 2x15 a 4 ohm cab and is the 4x10 an 8 ohm? If your mixing a 4 and an 8 ohm together and running them with your HA 5500 which puts out 4 ohms, then you might be shortening the life of your amp, 'cause it will be working too hard. I hope I'm wrong and your 2x15 is 8 ohms, if so , sorry for interfering.

In alphabetical order; ACG, Keith Bennion. I'd like to say Jaydee but I must have had a tempremental neck on my M.K. These are all from my own experience.

Got her back today, the lads at KGB have done a brilliant job. It's better than when I got it back in 1986! Massive thanks to Keith, Barry and Alan at KGB Music.

I bought a Squier bass from Nick. The bass needs a bit of work but this was reflected in the great price. Nick was helpful and polite all the way through the deal, he even sent the bass via Parcelforce 24 hour delivery, it came 2 days later. The bass was packed in bubble wrap, inside a gig bag, inside a good box. I'd buy from Nick again, top Cornish Dude.

I've got a Jap Jazz, 62 RI, and I swaped the stock pickups, which sounded great, for EMG JV's (exposed poles) and this was even better. I get that raspy type breakup in the low mids and the speakers get a good work out. I've just tried the standard EMG Jazz bass set, they have a curved magnet in them, to follow the radius of the neck, and these are even better. There is a perfect, even string response that you don't get with most Jazz pickups because the E and G are closer to the pickup, so A and D are always lacking and in my experience, all of the notes on the A and D get lost in a band mix. I've got the perfect Jazz, for me, as I can swap the EMG's over for a vintage vibe, or a barking, honking, dog-duck of a sound. I have played a couple of American Jazz basses and they were great but my Jap Jazz, which I got from Tokyo, is so light and acoustically resonant, that when I first unwrapped it, I knew it was a special bass. Bassjamm, I've PMed you.

Mikey should be perfectly within his rights to work and make noise as he sees fit, as long as it's not late in the evening, there is nothing anyone, poice and lawyers included, could do to stop him. He should meet with the neighbours to say that he is going to contiue to work and then apologise for any inconvience. The bass looks like it's gonna be great, I like that ACG Skelf-like singlecut.

Does everyone have to carry their own gear in the bands that people are in? In my band, we all help each other carry each others stuff. If a guitarist uses a 4x12, then they are nearly always heavier than bass players 4x10's. Our drummers hardware box weighs a ton but it's a two man lift and we take our time and we lift properly.
Just beefed up my rig. I'm now running two amps, one for bass with one set of fx and another for 'guitar' (bass shifted up 2 octaves) with another set of fx. It looks like this: And it sounds truly terrifying. The 'guitar' rig is a 50's Vortexion 50w PA head full of Mullards (EL34's and ECC81s) with a Frunt (never heard of them) 4x12 which I filled with Celestion Seventy/80 speakers. The bass rig is a Sunn 1200s, Korg DTR1000 and Aguilar GS412. The pedal board I use to control it all is here: Although I've shifted it all around and added another Danelectro DJ13 since that was taken. The DJ13's are what I'm using to shift up and add distortion for the 'guitar' channel. The router in the middle of the board is just a two way looper (for the bass fx) plus a third loop fed by a split from the input with a separate output that mutes when you turn it off. This is used to double my signal into the guitar fx and amp so I can bring it in when I like. It sounds surprisingly convincing and you really couldn't tell it's a pitch shifted bass. There is more info on the signal chain of the board and stuff in the pedalboard thread if you're really interested. No recordings with it yet but I'll post some up in the next few weeks.
Will you get some better pics of your rig up, so I can have a good perv? Cheers.
Well thats my point. they have them and i dont.
Ampeg came upon a defining sound with their SVT stuff in 1969, I used it with roadies and without. Light gear is great, but I've not heard a neo speaker that sounds better than a regular one, yet. (The Bergs probably sound superb) I think, IMO, tone is worth the extra 30 lbs.

I've just asked my wife would I should do with my gear if I popped off before she did and had time to sort anything out. She said that she would keep everything as it is, as it would remind her of me every day. I filled up.

I can't stop looking at it and it's a good excuse for not putting everything back in the loft, as we've just had it insulated. I am a lazy bones. Got anymore lovely basses to look at?

Jakesbass, Jakesbass And Thrice Jakesbass
steve-soar replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in Tutors Available
Hi Jake any chance of you moving to the Wirral, so I can start upright lessons? Seriously though, can you recommend good tutors in the North West, as I'm seriously considering upright. I feel really excited about playing one, I have only played an upright once before and was overwhelmed by its sheer size and the sound was incredible. I know that double basses can cost tens, hundreds of thousands of pounds but could you recommend anything for a novice, are there any good Chinese ones for instance? Cheers Steve. -
Matt Garrison - how are his basses set up ?.
steve-soar replied to 6stringbassist's topic in Bass Guitars
This is what I love about Basschat, the way in which a topic can go through so many tangential forms. I worked for Keith Bennion at KGB Music and in my time there, I must have done 600+ fret dressings, from light passes with the file and wire wool, like Urb mentioned, to taking plenty of meat off and re-profiling with a diamond file, through the grades of paper and then a buff to a mirror like finish, checking all the time with a high quality straight edge. You would think that after that after a pro fret dress and setup, that a bass would be ready for an ultra low action, in reality, only a few that I saw were capable of having the action ultra low. This is because it doesn't mean a thing unless the neck is totally stable. On bolt-on neck basses, the pocket has to be a perfect fit for the neck, in set and thru basses, the build quality has to be spot-on, carbon stiffening rods go a long way to sorting bendy necks (Jaydee). Singlecut basses finally give a chance to get a firm foundation for the fingerboard and frets to be shaped and dressed to perfection and there is that word again, perfection. I'm always tweeking my basses for a little bit of improvment here and there. When I played Kevs Modulus, I thought that he hadn't tuned the strings up, its action was that low and the tension of the strings was so light, thats a high quality carbon composite neck for you. When I got my ACG Singlecut, I was amazed at the low action and overall stiffness of the neck, Alan builds a solid bass. So, a solid well built bass, with a solid neck and great fretting, choice of fingerboard and neck material are the foundation you need for a low action. As for Matts tone, I think he expresses himself beautifully on the bass guitar and I'm sure he doesn't want to sound like someone standing at the back of a stage playing Mustang Sally. -
