1. I was the original owner of this bass - nice to see it again! What a stunner it is. Just thought I'd confirm a few details that you were unsure about re the specs incase anyone is wandering/it helps with the sale. - That top laminate is definitely a Maple one - it's crazy, most people think it's Walnut! Very special. - Body is indeed Ash, and lightweight too, I remember it feeling around the 8.5/9 lb mark. - Circuit in this is an East/Skjold one. Its made by the fantastic John East but is voiced slightly differently to Pete Skjolds specifications. There is a mid range frequency trim pot in side too for fine adjusting the mid freq to work with the instrument. - Pick ups are Skjold humbuckers, very nice growl and very quiet - If I remember correctly they are actually made by Dingwall for Skjold. - I sem to remember there being a zero fret on the end of that fingerboard too which is supposed to improve intonation. A fantastic instrument, and yes Pete Skjold is awesome on the customer service front, so you'll always have back up if you ever need anything. Good luck with the sale, glad to see the old axe looking well.
2. If it was me, I'd do some homework on the Lindy Fralin pups. Check talk bass too, there was a great review on there i seem to recall, where someone had swapped a load of pups in and out of the same Jazz bass. Fralins sound great to me.
3. Their stuff is fantastic. I think if I had to buy a new cab, then these would be on my (very) shortlist. Glock stuff isn't old school/ampeg territory, but it's very clear and quite transparent and full/deep. Musical is a word that springs to mind. In a sea of pretty 'quacky', nasal sounding cabs so common nowadays these things really stand out for me. If you have a good sound, you can do a lot with it, so I suspect they would be very versatile. Need to play them some more, I had one hired for me in Holland once. I have used old Epi series 1 cabs for years, Glock stuff always interests me. Hopefully they will become more common place here so we can get our hands on some of their fine kit!
4. what bass are you playing?
5. Come on honestly Rotosounds? In my experience they are the worst strings, and for some reason seem to be highly regarded by your average shop. Maybe it's the endorsements working well for the brand. Anyway, I've found Galli strings to be fantastic regardless of the price, but that considered I have to throw the brand into this conversation. Seriously great value, and great strings. I have used them next to DR in the past, but for me DR are the favourite. Gali are great as a back up or cheaper alternative. Highly recommended value and quality. Try them out. They do a few different specs so you should find your regular 'thing' in their stable.

SOLD

Edit bump.
7. Re the Merlin bass - WOW, Bernie's woodwork is some of the best in the world. How amazing all the laminates and finishes come together. If I had a single cut, I would always look more at the back than the front! The black one does look more 'complete' to the eye, it's probably exactly the same shape, but the part where the arm rests at the top/back of the body looks less prominent. Seems to help the shape, but that part of the design makes it really comfy to play being a bit more extended on his original designs. Good to see him looking well and turning out amazing look basses as always.
8. I just wanted to say, as so often we only hear of the negatives, how great this case has been. It must be 5 years old and has been everywhere with me, all the time. Only just giving up the ghost, but I'm buying another. - Solid protection, not at all bulky - Comfortable to wear - Only thing I wouldn't do is fly with it - Fits really nicely inside an SKB bass safe - best flying combo for mortals who don't have containers and crew being shipped all over the place for them! - Looks good. (hate some of the naff colours these designers come up with) - Totally functional in every way - Good pockets/Storage - Been the most durable bag I've ever used. Even when it's dying it's still not dropping the bass on the floor, just letting go slowly. This is all in my experience only, and I have no connection with the company. Hopefully if you are 'Googling' the case you might come across this and it may be some help with you decision. Just good to have solid, proper products out there. When something works, I think it's worth sharing. Anyway, enough from me! Cheers, Fingerz
9. I played this bass a couple of weeks ago. It has the music man tone in spades (i've played some-especially 5's, that don't hit the spot in that old school way) and the neck is wonderful. I highly recommend you check this bass out if you are looking for a nice 'Ray 5. Best of luck with the sale.
10. Learning something new is never going to make you worse.
11. Bump just so as i'm not too far away from any hunters!!
12. Welcome - I'm sure you'll feel very at home here!! Yes, Wal basses are very highly thought of around here. I've only played one fretless that was massive and growly. They are superb basses! Good luck in your quest and I'm sure you'll get sucked into the forum as we all have!! Best wishes, Jo
13.
Excellent thread! Loving the Fodera
Yep. Clever design. It retains much of the vintage growl and manages to be modern sounding too. Still warm and musical.
14. Only just listened to this. It's interesting, the Jazzes seem to work all round in general with each inherent tone coming through in all settings.. Personally love the '77. It's growly and that warm 'snap' and 'thump' is there when it is slapped. The Sadowsky to my ears is just waiting to be slapped (ooh er!), and seems voiced that way throughout the other settings. Same with the Pensa. Pedula is a surprise, nice. The custom shop reissue stuff comes through nicely too - props to Fender. It's all horses for courses, great to be able to hear such a stable of great 'iconic' basses together in one place. That must have been a nervous car journey! Lol. Thanks for getting this together.
15.
Very similar to mine with the traditional vol, vol tone passive controls, I hadn't seen one like mine before, what model is it classed as? Mine is more of a Lake Placid blue metallic, never had the neck off so not sure how old.
Yes that is a 'Classic' model. Passive. I think the serial number is in the cavity, but I can't quite remember!
16. Amazing bass for sale here folks. Makes a lot of the more popular brands around here feel and sound like toys. Highly recommended and Chris is a great guy to deal with. This is also the killer spec (preamp, blocks and binding) with the price rage of a dotted, unbound neck. Bump on me!
17. Stunning bass. If i wanted a fretless Jazz this would be it. BTW the pickups do indeed look like the Armstrong humbuckers, which work v well with the Celinder pre to get that single coil tone. Amazing. Good luck with the sale!
18. It's not the pickups or something is it? Being too far away from the strings? To have not enough low end on anything is quite unusual - the 'character' of that low end varies, but often in my experience, lower priced stuff is all low end and nothing else!! I don't think there is a problem with Cort basses, great value and consistent build quality. Again IME. Maybe something is going on or the string is choking etc etc. I highly recommend John East preamps if you are looking for a change. But it's the sum of all parts so it's hard to say what you will like. I do know that the Aggi bass frequency is quite savage, so sometimes it can be hard to get the tone right, but this huge amount of low end might be what you are after.
19. The nicest colour of any modern bass. So unique yet old school. Wish I could play it. Good luck with the sale.
20. Very cool. Enjoy!
21. Re string volume. Firstly I'd try changing the strings - you may have a duff set, or something has caused the other strings to go dull/quiet in comparison to the top two. What is inside the pickups? I've had experience with split coil pickups that weren't evenly balanced, meaning that one side of the pickup seems quieter than the other.. In the live context, is it a massive problem? Being the higher strings it can be useful to maintain presence in the mix of a band/soloing.. The most helpful thing is to eliminate possibilities. Is it just on the open strings, or is it consistent all the way up the neck? I'm thinking of whether it's a resonance thing or a technical thing. Maybe the nut is loose on the lower side of the neck, something like that… Food for thought I hope. !
22. If it can't be made to play in tune, surely it's not fit for purpose??
23.
No it's a rumour circuit - when I ordered the build from Bernie I asked if he could put in the full rumour electronics but married to the 'in line' jazz style control layout as I think that looks better on the spitfires rather than the 'rumour' control layout. Of course being a custom builder, he said yes! (It does mean a stacked bass/mid pot though as the other 3 are pup pan, volume & treble)
Ah right, nice idea. Looks loooovely. By the way, I'm pretty certain that the two designs (spitfire/rumour) share the same circuit. At least that's what I understood. Not that it matters of course. Enjoy the bass, I bet it almost plays itself!
24. I don't know if they are still going, but I got one from Silverstone a few years ago. An all over cover that zips up. Much better quality than any others I've seen. A bit crap to get hold of, but IME that's the way with most things in this cottage industry! Highly recommended and has stood up to lots of use very well.
