I've been tempted by the TL 5050 recently: http://www.tlaudio.co.uk/docs_07/product_07/5050.shtml Great price (£275 on DV247) for a simple tube pre and compressor. They get decent reviews as well, so might be worth considering if an EQ is not a priority.

Has Basschat had a negative effect on your wallet?
~tl replied to lateralus462's topic in General Discussion
Yes. Significantly. -
That's my kinda price - have you tried one? Do you know the scale length?
I would guess it'd be something around 17" since it's a half size instrument...

Out of interest, what brands of strings have you been using?

Can I have your opinions on the Fender 'Sting' precision please.
~tl replied to 6stringbassist's topic in Bass Guitars
It's a nice bass. However, I'd personally go for the '51 re-issue over the Sting signature: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0271902503 It's pretty much the same bass, albeit with a slab body and without the (ghastly) 12th fret inlay, and is about £120 cheaper going by DV's prices. You also get the choice of butterscotch blonde as well as the sunburst finish – though I'd personally go for the sunburst. Oh... and I'd recommend you upgrade the rubbish two saddle bridge they ship on them to a four saddle one to improve the intonation. Either that, or go the whole hog and stick a Badass III on it Double oh... there's also a Squire version that runs at half the price again and gets really good reviews. Would be worth serious consideration since it's just for a backup bass. It only comes in blue – so isn't quite so "vintage" looking – but also comes with a much better bridge as standard. GuitarGuitar in Glasgow has a Custom 200 in stock... guess they might have them in other stores too.

In: → Fender American Deluxe Precision V (from Lysdexia – damn those models he gets to sell his basses!). → ACG's frankly excellent EQ02 pre-amp for the above. → Bartolini 8S pup set, new machine heads, new electrics, and a few other odds and ends for my Jap Precision. → Turbo RAT. → Far too many sets of strings. Out: → An equal number of sets of strings destined for the bin
I've done small gigs in the past with a Hartke A70, they also do an A100 and the 120w kickbacks, all go for small money
I've even done medium sized gigs with a Hartke A35 – albeit DIed into the PA and I was just using the amp as a personal monitor. I didn't have to have it turned up more than half way since it has plenty of punch to cut through a band mix, and you can have it tilted back so it points directly at your head. My Precision is pretty loud too, which helps. They're excellent amps all round – mine's been solid since I've had it.

Allparts have them as well: http://www.allparts.uk.com/250k-audio-spli....html?p=product

I'd go for replacement pickups and an East/ACG pre-amp in the Squire. Should be a beast!

CAN I BI-AMP INTO A POWERED CAB?? Help Please!
~tl replied to BIG.J's topic in Repairs and Technical
The HA5000 doesn't have line outputs, so I think it would be hard to achieve what you're looking for with a powered cab. You could take a feed from the DI output to an external crossover – but that ties up the DI ouput, which isn't ideal. I think a much better plan would be to buy a standard cabinet (unpowered) and use that. Hookup of that is simple with the HA5000, just connect one passive cab to the high output and one to the low output. Whatever you do, DO NOT connect an active cab to the speaker outputs on the amp head. It's a very easy way to break things... -
OBBM. Nuff said... http://www.bassic.co.uk/

The most expensive guitar cable in christendom?
PROPAGATION: 86% the speed of light What the hell does that mean?
It means it takes 3.89nS (that's 0.00000000389 seconds) for a signal to travel down a 1m cable... -
Dead battery?

Heh, that's not a particularly good way of fixing it... but never mind! First off, head over to the Seymour Duncan website and download the wiring diagram for a Jazz Bass (I'm on my phone just now so can't get you a link... sorry... maybe someone else could?). That should give you an idea of where everything should be connected. The buzzing sounds like you've connected the tail piece wire to the "hot" signal connection rather than the earth. It should be a single wire coming from either the tail piece area or through the bridge pickup route and should be soldered to the metal casing of one of the pots. The "wooly" sound is probably the tone control being shorted out, but, again, it's hard to tell without a pic for reference. Hope that helps a little!

The Hartke gear is pretty good value for money... might be worth a look.

Waiting for my upgrade e-mail from Digidesign – bought the 7.4 upgrade a few months ago and it came with a free upgrade to 8 when it was released. It looks pretty great, I can't wait to have a play!

I'm a fan of the P-J set up personally. It's nice to have the thump of the P pickup and to also be able to blend in a little of the highs from the J in the bridge.

I think the phrase "Passive Attenuator" on the front of the pedal says it all...

While you do pay a premium for a Mac, in my opinion it's worth the extra cash. The new, aluminium, MacBooks are rather nice computers, but the lack of Firewire may be a slight hindrance if you're planning on doing any professional recording with it. But there are a fairly good choice of USB interfaces these days – so I guess it shouldn't be too much of a problem. For simple iTunes/e-mail/web browsing/etc, the Mac is just an easier platform to live with and is more stable in my experience. Not having to run constant virus & spyware scans is rather refreshing! You can get equivalents for pretty much any Windows program – and a lot of them a free! Or you can install Windows (natively or in a virtual machine) for those that don't have an equivalent Mac version. The "iLife" bundle that comes with the Mac is pretty great for photos/videos/music/websites/etc. I would recommend you go and try one out at an Apple store and see how they work in person before you make any decisions. Oh, and if you are a student (or know any) then you can get some pretty nice discounts from Apple – you can get about £130 off the new MacBooks currently. They're still £800 odd though Edit: Oh – and my advice to you – shell out the extra money for the AppleCare support plan. It's well worth the money when your battery dies or you have some random problem with your machine. They give you three years of warranty and phone support, so if you have any problems you can just phone them up or take it in to a store to get it fixed.

Does the XLR input on the LMII support phantom power? If it does, then I'd guess it'd be theoretically possible – though it would need a bit of fiddling about on the bass end.
