  1. Did you copy the moves though?
  2. I didn’t start playing bass until my 20s, but those who made my ears prick up in my teens were: But it was this guy who made want to jump ship to the low end
  3. Hadn’t played mine for a while, got it out and was impressed with the playability all over again. I’m really tempted to fit a set of EMG GZRs, with a new side jack.
  4. Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull
  5. Sort of fits the pattern of today’s price differential, Gibsons more than Fenders (for standard US models).
  6. Looks lush, however.
  7. Given that Ibanez were not the highly respected company they are now, back then, those are not cheap.
  8. All around the £2.3k mark in today’s money I think. I’m intrigued by what looks like a 4/6, Ibanez, twin neck on the next page.
  9. Saturday Night Special - Lynyrd Skynyrd
  10. Shoot Shoot - UFO
  11. Welcome back to the fold.
  12. My first guitar of good quality cost me £125 in ‘75, an Aria, law suit, Les Paul (bolt on neck). Apparently, that equates to about £1130 in today’s prices. I’m amazed that I spent that much back then, it didn’t feel like a massive amount at the time, not cheap, but definitely OK (it was nearly all the money I had earned from a job in the summer holidays). Spending that kind of money these days on anything, gives me pause and maybe I’m not being realistic? Heaven alone knows what the equivalent cost of a Fender or Gibson would be compared to back then. Perhaps it’s merely crossing certain lines in the monetary sand that makes us wince? Also, maybe we’re in a golden age of good instruments for, by comparison to decades ago, little money.
  13. I know this seems a bit hit miss with accurate info, but it’s great that Sire answer emails from the general public and seem genuinely interested in helping. I emailed them about something a good while back and I remember them being super helpful then too. Tech21, DiMarzio and Hipshot have this kind of customer service too, nothing seems to be too much bother. Other companies could learn a thing or two from this kind of service, both large and small, UK and US based.
  14. Tear It Up - Queen
  15. Yep, Bill Lawrence pickups. Roscoe’s album Walk On is definitely worth a listen. Not a bass player’s solo album in the classic sense, in fact there is only one small ‘bass feature’, it’s a collection of the great man’s songs with various guests on vocals, guitar, etc (including Robben Ford, Greg Koch and Eric Johnson). I saw Roscoe with Robben at The Jazz Café playing a 4 and 5 string version of his sig bass. To my ears, the 4 string sounded better. I also owned one for a good while and realise I should never has moved it on, but GAS and all that. Roscoe was also Leonard Cohen’s MD for his long farewell tours.
  16. Listen Like Thieves - INXS
  17. Framed - SAHB
  18. Start Me Up - The Stones
  19. Rescue Me - Aretha
  20. Getting old and infirm sucks 😤! At least you owned and enjoyed them for a while. Hopefully, you can have some fun with the proceeds.
  21. The rise of synths was heralded as the end of the requirement for musicians beyond keyboard players and drum programmers. Yet, here we still are. There will be a place for this new threat to our very existence, but I imagine folk will still be plucking, bowing, striking whatever instrument takes their fancy and railing against the electronic upstart de jour.
  22. My oldest bass is my Rob Allen MB2, which I’ve had for coming up 10 years. My oldest instrument is my Simon & Patrick Rosewood Pro, acoustic guitar, which I’ve had for nearly 30 years.
  23. The way to approach life in general, methinks.
  24. Exactly this ^^^^ Add to this the predictable, dissenting commentary from whomever the BBC employ, makes it even more contrived.
