It’s surprising how much a couple of millimetres make. However, reaching the E string with your pinky might have as much to do with the body’s ergonomics than the neck width/hand size. Most short scales flare out too, especially those with 19mm spacing at the bridge, Hofners being an exception to this IIRC, so you still might find it an issue. I don’t have overly large hands (but not small) and there are fingerings that I struggle with up at the dusty end (Pino’s outro to Tear Your Playhouse Down, for instance), what I tend to is find a different fingering that negates some of the high frets on the E string.

Ah, but it will niggle you and it could hinder your performance. I had a Basic VM, it played great and although it sounded fine, there was something characterless about it and I eventually moved it on. Thinking back, a change of electronics was probably the correct way forward (I forget what I did next, it certainly didn’t stick). I be tempted to go Nordstrand, Carey’s products seem to have bags of character and tone.

I had a LaBella, tapewound, G string (stop it!) that rattled. I thought it was a high spot on my fretless, but I stuck it on a fretted and it still rattled. Contacted LaBella (it had been a good while since I purchased them from the retailer and knew I wouldn't get any help because of that) and they couldn't have been more helpful. I covered the postage and they sent me a new G string (oi! I've told you before ), rattle gone. The point of this tale is that it might be a faulty string, which appears to be a more common occurrence that you'd think.
