  1. Rubber perishes. I've been using these twist-to-lock plastic jobs for over a decade with no issues: https://www.jimdunlop.com/lok-strap-strap-retainer-system-set-of-3/ edit: I've got a spare one here if you want it, @ClassicVibes - PM me your address and I'll stick it in the post
  2. Guitarguitar have the Keeley Bassist on offer for £149, and the almost-identical and totally usable with bass GC-2 for £99. I know at least half of my posts are me banging on about how great the Bassist is, but... it really is very good! 😊

+1, that's a great price for either! Have the Bassist myself and it's an excellent comp/limiter.

  3. The scratchplate on a Jazz isn't attached to any of the electronics, is it? Could you whip the plate off your 62 and place it on top of one of the other basses as a template? Poke a pencil or something through the screw holes to mark where they should go.
  4. Something like this?
  5. Comparing the lists of most-viewed tabs vs chords is interesting: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/top/tabs?order=hitstotal_desc&type=chords https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/top/tabs?order=hitstotal_desc&type=tab I think the data for the bass list might be broken... there's a suspicious amount of ZZ Top, Frank Zappa, and other artists towards the end of the alphabet: 😆 https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/top/tabs?type=bass&order=hitstotal_desc
  6. Modern, but not in production: Genz-Benz Shuttle for sure - and I assume the Streamliner as well, since it has three pre-amp valves and was marketed as the more valve-y option
  7. I've got an old set of GHS Pressurewounds which you can have if you like. They obviously won't sound brand new, but should give you an idea of the tension/stiffness if you're considering them as an option. You can PM me if you're interested.
  8. Save the 9V power output for the Ashdown Power Ant*, which will also have: Line-level inputs (balanced?) for connecting a pre-amp (or a keytar, or anything else you fancy) No amp-style EQ or tone shaping; flat response Adjustable high-pass filter (to DI and speaker outputs), for keeping your bottom clean Adjustable low-pass filter (to DI, and switchable to speaker output), for taming overdrive fizz into the desk or a full-range speaker I mean some sort of IR loader would be nice too, but let's not be greedy 😆 Go-faster stripes * See what I did there? 😁
  9. I never use the J pickup on my Special, but the P sounds great as it is... now I'm wondering what the difference would be if the J was disconnected. Might have to get my soldering iron out!
  10. Those Deluxe strats have a great reputation as well. I was very tempted by a pearl white metallic one, but I ended up getting a Classic Vibe 60s - an older Chinese one in burgundy mist metallic, which is really more of a lilac, but still looks boss: I actually really like the gloss neck... but then there's very little danger of anyone asking me to play guitar live, so I don't need to worry whether it might be sticky 😆
  11. Soldering experts! I've accidentally ended up with 40/60 solder instead of 60/40 🤦‍♂️
Do I need to change it, or is it not going to be noticeably different for guitar wiring and small electronics stuff?

It wont make any difference to the conductivity but you may notice a slight difference in the melting temperature.

  12. 😮 Bloody hell, you're not kidding! I paid a lot less than that for mine, and even that was absolutely at the top-end of what I think is fair for a pedal. I'm not sorry that I did, mind you; it's definitely a "forever" pedal for me, and works just as well on guitar, keyboard, or anything with a line out. But if I was looking for a limiter today, I don't think it'd even be on my radar at £200 💸 Edit: Though the very similar GC-2 can be had for £50 less... 🤔 https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/14123012412516--keeley-gc-2-limiting-amplifier
  13. Keeley Bassist - simple, effective, transparent.
  14. Check these out: https://www.rockboard.de/en/accessories/led-damper Classier than a bit of sticky tape!
  15. I bought a pedal from Gaz. Well packaged and swiftly despatched; smooth transaction and friendly comms. Everything you could hope for! Thank you Gaz! 😃
  16. Currently reduced from $289 to $199. I love spending other people's money... 😉 Edit: Hmmmmm, I've just seen it suggested that the Carvin is identical to this Harley Benton: https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_custom_line_thunder_99.htm 🤔
  17. Carvin have a stereo pedal-sized power amp coming out, but at 50W per side it's probably more guitar territory than bass. https://carvinaudio.com/products/mach100-100w-pedal-amplifier
  18. Have a look at Sugar Ray's Vintage Recording Studio in Wickford: http://sugarraysvintagerecordings.co.uk/the-studio/ https://www.facebook.com/SugarRaysStudioUK/ All vintage 50s gear - you can't get much more authentic. Single-track recording can be a bit nerve-wracking, so you've got to be good and tight - or willing to do lots of takes without anyone losing their temper! 😆
  19. 5' 9" - strictly average
  20. It's all in the fingers
  21. They're a bit cagey about whether their new "Brick" pedals have these things pre-installed, which is naughty since they're advertising them as "tube guitar preamplifiers". I'm definitely not someone who believes that valves are magical and will never be bettered, but I'd still like to know exactly what I'm getting!
  22. If I wanted something vintage for looks and home usage, a B-15 would be the #1 choice. Or maybe a cream Fender Showman, since I'm spending someone else's money... 😆
  23. Fun fact: Strats, Teles, Jazzmasters and Jaguars all originally had bridge covers. They're probably even rarer than the bass ashtrays, since palm muting is so much more common on guitar.
  24. Ashtrays look great on a Precision. On a Jazz, less so - the bridge cover is gigantic because it has to stretch to the rear pickup. On early-model Jazzes it was also hiding an individual string muting system and a surface-mounted grounding wire between the pickup and bridge. When I was looking a couple of years back, I couldn't find any cheap P pickup covers. Plenty of P bridge / J pickup / J bridge / J sets though! 🤷‍♂️ I ended up paying full whack for a proper Fender P set. The P bridge cover is extremely useful for holding a piece of muting foam - great for pre-1970's sounds! Having the foam above the strings instead of below supposedly also affects the intonation less. I don't have any problem picking close enough to the bridge with the cover on, but I can see how it'd be a totally different situation on a Jazz! I find the P pickup cover mildly irritating for fingerstyle - I miss having the pickup edge to rest my thumb on. If I had a 70's-position thumbrest I don't think it'd bother me at all. The cover makes absolutely no difference when playing with a plectrum.
  25. You should be able to use Audacity to record from Youtube, Spotify, or any other audio stream. Have a look at the options in the dropdown menu next to the microphone icon - you want one that includes "loopback", "what u hear" (sic), or "stereo mix". This treats your audio output as a microphone input, so you end up recording all sounds currently playing on your PC. Start recording in Audacity, go to Youtube, play the video, wait for the song to end, stop recording, save. As others have described, you can then do your looping, speed changing, pitchshifting, EQ, etc. in Audacity as well. Though personally I prefer Transcribe! for this part - it feels a lot less clunky.
