Saturday 17 at the Wheatsheaf, High Street. 8.30 I'm playing with The Mark Bosley Band, rock+acoustic trio. Also playing, Oxford legends The Anyways, specially re-united for this gig (Mark Bosley's Birthday) The Mighty Redox, hard working party band, and Twizz Twangle, Oxford's finest singing postman (probably!) He's like a children's entertainer on acid. Sunday 18th September, The Eurobar, George Street, Oxford: Acoustic Night with Overrated, The New Moon, Des Barkus, and hosts Sue Smith and Phil Freizinger (7 pm, free) I play with The New Moon, (fretless) and acoustic guitar and possibly guest flute, psychedelic/melodic. I'll have the Barefaced Compact out for the Saturday (but only with a shuttle 3.0, so it'll hardly be pushed) and try out my mini homemade 10" cab for the quieter sunday one. Those Vox Standards are very heavy - a real man's bass. They're made of maple blockboard with maple front and back facings. And covered in the most amazingly thick tough stuff to remove. I defretted mine too, and swapped it for a pair of AR18s speakers.

Hey! a little metal insert on the headstock would facilitate a useful emergency bottle-opener. I quite like the headstock design - it will be nice to see it realized.

I'm sure they're lovely to play, but I still think they look RONGO!

Line6 Lowdown 110. I've used it for exactly the gigs you describe and it does very well. Has a good DI with speaker sim too.

I gave mine a good service before I sold it, and in trying everything out, found the line out and infact the whole preamp stage was very low noise. They use a decent toroidal transformer. This was the 4x10, and it did struggle at the highest volume settings in a 6 piece band, but was just about loud enough. The tone at lower volumes was punchy rather than deep. I think I sold mine for £75 ish. Theres a couple of things to look out for in the power stage. You can pm me for the details as I wouldn't want to bore this board (unless y'all WANT me to..), but they're no big deal and easily sorted. If it's cheap I'd really recommend it. Cheers Jules

Simple and inexpensive. And they keep your instrument fully original, if that sort of thing matters to you. I don't like the way Dunlops and Schallers resonate when playing seated with no tension on the strap. That tells me neither are quite engineered correctly. IMHO, of course.

I asked my good friend Phil about this as I remembered he had one. Here is his reply: I only ever used the SR16 as a midi sound module, not as a sequencer. However, against my better judgement I dug out my sr16 and investigated this… In Song Compose mode, if you press play, it keeps duplicating the current pattern, so starting with an empty song, you can: select pattern 1a, play, stop in step 4, move to step 5 select pattern 1b play stop in step 14 There you have the desired 14 bar song.
