1. Due to the weather apparently. Pathetic.
2. Is the body on these curved, it looks it in some of the photos? Any idea what the body woods are (assuming it is a flamey cap)? Cheers Jules
3. Hi folks The New Moon, fretless bass, acoustic guitar, djembe, play vaguely psyche/pop, and are supporting Anton Barbeau, an interesting songwriter from Sacremento Ca. There may be others on too, but we're on at the unfashionably early hour of 8.15. Always happy to chat bass if you introduce yourself! cheers Jules
4. Bother! missed this one. 2nd dibs please? Cheers Jules
5. U.S Masters basses are quite flat at the back, espcially towards the dusty end... Still don't seem to be many around over here though.
6.
Does anyone know where I can get replacement pickups for a Gibson EB-3? I know DiMarzio do a neck replacement (unfortunately in black rather than a bright metal) but I'm completely stuck on the mini humbucker. Any ideas?
Have you considered getting the pickup re-wound? 'm sure you could get what you want sound-wise, AND get to keep the shiny cover! Speak to someone like Wizard Pickups for example. Cheers Jules
7. The sponge stuff really works. Another thing I found helps is to use a reverb with the smallest room setting (it was an Alesis Microverb) mixed about 50-50, which to an extent emulates the body resonance of an acoustic bass. It may sound daft, but even holding the bass more uprightly than normal helps you to play more like an acoustic bass. I did use a fretless with roundwound strings, but flats do sound more "acoustic" and thumpy.
8. Is it a new range? Anyone tried one yet?
9.
Kudos for Fender, isn't that their first 6 string bass (not counting the baritone guitar) ?
Never heard of a Fender VI then? It's shorter than a usual Fender, but I don't think it counts as a Baritone guit. Roy Babbington of Soft Machine played one for years....
10. sounds about the same, but without the video games. Music in the front by the bar, townies in the back. Probably the same old hippies there as 25 years ago too, I'm a newcomer, so I couldn't possibly comment!
11. I think our next outing in Oxford is the 5th of February at The Jerico Tavern supporting Anton Barbeau, from Sacremento, Ca. Both of these are not a million miles removed from the 'Teeth, especially Anton's more psych stuff (Village of the Apple Sun album) www.myspace.com/thenewmoonnews www.myspace.com/antonbarbeau Nice bass BTW! it's a ...... ?

Oxford Gig

Hello any Oxfordites. My Duo / occasional trio, The New Moon, are on early doors 8.30? along with Redox and the Pete Fryer Band. We play acoustic, sometimes psychadelic songs, on acoustic guitar and fretless bass, helped out by a bit of flute and djembe here and there. Come and say hello! Sorry for the short notice, we are late subs! Cheers Jules PS Im pretty sure it is free to get in too!
13.
I'm sure previous consensus was that it's a Tobias Growler.
Thanks for that! I kind of had it in mind it might be a Toby of some flavour but I'm not all that familiar with 'em. I just thinks it's nice they didn't just go for a generic guitar like a Les Paul or Strat...
14. It's good to see the Jack Bass love going on here! I've got a Jack custom in natural I wouldn't mind selling as I haven't played it since I got it (playing fretless, well, a defretted jack, mostly now and play the blue fretted in my avatar) It's in good condition but the truss rod will only adjust the neck so far, and won't take all the relief out with std gauge strings. These things don't go out of tune! PM me if you're interested, it won't be expensive..... Cheers Jules
15. This may have come up before, but does anyone know what the "guitar" picture you can select for a user account pic in Windows XP is, or is meant to be? I've pondered on this for a while now. Sorry, I can't work out how to put the pic up here. Cheers Jules
16. This was mine. Very playable, nice slim neck[, well balanced and with a decent range of usable tones Slim neck? do you mean narrow? Mine are quite chunky front to back, a nice round profile.
17. This makes them very uncommon - and leads to the likes of me finding a rather lovely set-neck, carved top Hondo LP copy languishing at my local car boot, for £25.
I have a mate who has one of those - It's really not at all bad. Is the carved top sort of hollow sounding when you rap on it? His has gold hardware and an unfashionably brown figured finish. I thought the p/us were DiMarzio, but were rather microphonic. Jules
18. ^^ that was nice playing. He's a new name to me, and it seemed to make sense of having those "extra" strings for once!!!
19. I imagine a headphone output would be useful on a travel bass, saves carting an amp about for quiet practice. Fails the "passive" criterion though, unless you incorporate a stethoscope style earphone.
20. I like some of the old players who, I think, moved things along in their own way, so I would have to agree with: Colin Hodgekinson (Back Door) Percy Jones And add: Leigh Gorman Whoever called Ed Poole - nice one! I used to know him a bit. Good player and a nice guy.
21. Do you use headphones for monitoring the mixdown?
22. My Gibson SG special '74 was in its case and fell from waist height to the floor. I didn't think to much to it (well, it WAS in the case after all) but the next time i opened it up.... Headstock crack I VERY nearly cried!! The good news is it wasn't too severe and repaired ok. I must have the world record for ruining a bass though. 10 minutes after getting it home (local ebay sale) I had broken the truss rod, just giving the neck that "final tweak" to get the bow out... After years of headless bass playing, I managed to knock my newly acquired U.S. Masters off its strap walking through a doorway and catching the headstock. It landed front down onto bare concrete. Good job it was oiled finish, the scuffs hardly show on the body. Could have been SO much worse!! Funny, I never considered myself clumsy, but might have to modify my opinion after writing this! Jules
23. What's with the extra holes in the neck? Did they add more screws to stabilize the neck in that "wizards sleeve" neck pocket?
