Double bass search. Looking for ideas :-)
geoffbassist replied to geoffbassist's topic in EUB and Double Bass
bob offers great service. I bought a few things over the years, your 5 string looks great :-)
My 5 string is a Kremona, which I bought through Bob Gollihur as I mentioned in another thread. Decent quality, and wider range of options (4/4, 5 strings. l/handed etc) but as if I were doing the full classically trained thing I'd be after something higher quality I think. The Upton range look fantastic.
-

Hi nick. Yeh they are great instruments at fantastic prices. I was there last week and tried them. All really great but he's finishing off a nice roundback which I'm hoping to take on trial. I've previously played a Bryant solo and was very impressed. Thanks for your reply cheers geoff :-) -

Martyn is amazing, one of the top uk luthiers. His instruments are incredible, but a bit out of my budget. However he sets up the jay haide so well that I am considering them. -

I do like the look of the german basses and have enjoyed your thread. With yita musics imports and other Chinese basses like the jay haide there is a lot of amazing deals. If I could find a 'top end ' bass importer I would be intrested as the value is amazing.
I guess you may be looking at something better than the Gedo Musik basses - see my input/pics on this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry766332 but you're welcome to pick my brains on these. otherwise, has anyone got any comments on the Kremona basses? http://www.sandarac.co.uk/rangekremona.html (European made, not to be confused with Cremona - Chinese!) Their UK imports are connected with: http://www.oakdenemusicservices.co.uk/
-

Oh, the reason I've not put this in items wanted is I wanted this to be a broader discussion about luthiers etc and what's out there for all uk bassists. -
Hi guys. I'm looking for a quality instrument and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas or experiences that might help. I'm a classical post grad student who also plays a lot of jazz. I'm looking for a loud, easy to play, well made instrument with loads of bass. It needs to be suitable for solo recitals. I really like the Bryant double basses and will be viewing one in a few weeks. I've also heard lots of positive stuff about the uptons and martin concert basses.I also like the jay haide basses. I would also consider somthing old if it was ready to play and in great condition. Money wise I'm obviously looking for a great deal. I guess I would like to spend no more than 5k...but would consider other options. Cheers Geoff

what do you think of an Overwater single cut?
geoffbassist replied to FLoydElgar's topic in Bass Guitars
For me the design of any bass has to be for acoustic reasons and ease of playing. The look IS important but should never be at the expence of either of the above. Good luck with your search -
what do you think of an Overwater single cut?
geoffbassist replied to FLoydElgar's topic in Bass Guitars
I just don't understand why. Unless the whole bass is designed from ground up as a single cut it's just gonna be a strange add on which creates a heavy unbalanced bass. It won't change the tone to the point you could hear it and it will make it less playable. I love the fodera single cuts but all the others I've tried (shuker)have been very poor. I would find someone who wants to make one because of the design goals. Or start saving for the fodera :-) BTW I really like luthiers like wal and overwater or even ken smith and sadowsky who have a strong design which they stand benind. Don't mean to have a go at shuker as I'm sure he makes good basses. But why have the single cut fodera rip off and the rubbish rob Allen rip off. They would b better to find their own voice. -
It's a nightmare! I'm also an addict! I would recomend NOT getting an iPhone, it's non stop basschat for me since I got one! ...., I'm off 2 practice......4 a bit, c u in 10 mins!

I also agree that playing as many basses is key to understanding what works for you. -

Visit the gallery and buy a sadowsky. I've ordered custom basses elsewhere and had problems. .. Or combine the bass purchace with a US holiday! Cheers Geoff -

Hard to tell from the pic but if they are bright orange they look like thomastic belcantos. Great place for string ID is contrabass shop as they have pics of each string. . Shame about the crazy prices .
