1. Great sound.really meaty! What's strings r u using?
2. I've been asked about cases. I'm afraid I don't have a hard case, but can provide a well used tribal planet gig bag. It's very well padded but a bit tatty. One on the side handles is missing. Cheers Geoff
3. Congratulations matt. I've always wanted a smith, great instruments :-)
4. This bass is back up for sale! Please see original advert above.
5.
It's not that weird.Doug Wilkes was making basses similar to that in the '80's-only his were 4 strings(fretted E and A,fretless D and G).
it's not the fretted/fretless bit, Ive owned a bass fretted until the 12th fret before. It's having the tuning: EADGDG : too much for me. .
6.
I'd love this, but sadly I have no space for such a beast. It seems like a great deal, plus Chris is a great guy to deal with.
I agree. It's a lot of bass for the money. !
7. The ibanez bass is insane! What a weird idea. Maybe I'm a bit old school ... imagine if u sat in at a jam session and borrowed that! Agghhh :-)
8.
That is the best Double Bass tone I have ever heard in my life.
:-) comments don't get any better than that! It's all about the strings. I do love the evahs but think my old spirocore weichs may have been even better. I heard The Major using some evahs though recently and he sounded fantastic. I think they are a bit gut like, with out the serious hassle of actual gut strings. And for the first 6 months or so they still growl a bit.
9. I'm a York native and am staying with my parents on micklegate till thurs. If u need any pointers feel free to pop in :-)
When I can get someone round to play it for you, I'll record my DB. Or alternatively you can give me a few more months, I am still trying.
10. It's my previous bass (100 year old german trade bass bought from turners violins in 2005) foolishly traded it in for my current one. I do like the sound of the recording. When I get my new bass sorted I will post some clips :-) cheers Geoff
11. Serious bargain :-) good luck with your sale.
12.
Nice Geoff! A lovely tone, full, warm, round, fat, beautiful!
thanks Steve :-) hope lifes going good mate.
13. Really cool music! Nice work :-)
14. Hi Guys, this is my most recent double bass recording for a wedding band jazz trio. It's really cheesey! I was recorded on the fly in my friends lounge with a mic so you can really hear the tone of the bass. It was strung with Evah weichs which i love. Im not thrilled with my playing but you can hear the bass as its got the first solo :-)
15. Mmm I would post some pics on ken smiths bass forum http://www.smithbassforums.com/index.php? He has a section under 'Old Bass' for English instruments and they really know there stuff. Whoever the makers, both your basses have been a pleasure to hear. Fantastic instruments :-)
16.
I am fortunate in that my biggest interest in life is also my work - plants - so the overlap of work into leisure is pretty seamless. So for work and pleasure I design gardens (I ran a small specialist nursery for a few years) but get the biggest thrill of keeping my own 'sub-tropical' garden looking just how I want it. What I have done here has been occasionally featured in newspapers, magazine articles, books and TV. Music is my other vice.
cool :-)
17. I'm a full time freelance bassist and the playing is almost always fun, paid or unpaid. It's the rest of the job that's not not fun, loads of driving, low pay, bad conditions, no social life, crazy hours etc... I still play for fun but try not to get distracted whilst practising.
18.
Thanks for the replies everyone.I was guesstimating about £2500 to refurbish it to a decent standard so if it wasn't worth a lot more than that there's no point.I'll leave this one to a luthier. Cheers Iain
my guess would be you are in the right ball park. I think it the work would need to be done directly by the buyer to realise any profit. Without seeing the bass first it could be way more or less than you think.
19. I agree, proably german trade bass. I doubt it would be worth much more than the total spend. Would also take a long time.
Hi, Be careful -you need to make sure you get your sums correct on this . Looks like an old-(ish) French flatback to me (could possibly be German) this is the sort of thing a luthier would take a punt on to sell on again . The price the vendor wants plus what a good luthier is going to charge you to fix it will probably be 'all of its money', That being the case it might be 'safer' to buy one in better condition . I appreciate the attraction of getting a doer-upper in the hope of getting something really nice for less money, but it could end up costing more in the long run. good luck k
20. Looks good to me. You could repair the neck but it would need a lot of work to get the bass restored properly. It's more about knowing a good luthier with free time and fair rates :-)
