  1. I have a Selmer Series III Tenor I bought in the late 1990s. It still smells of a thousand Working Men's Clubs. I play the flute rather than the sax nowadays.

  3. All good... some are true stonkers... I will have to make a masterlist. ... now I'm thinking of forming an Anthemic Encore Band. The only ones I can't consider are AC/DC. My last band did a lot of AC/DC and the vocalist had it nailed... don't think the current singer could quite do it... he does a very creditable Marc Bolan, though...

  8. ... for old fartz classic rock covers band. We are currently working on the GnR version of Knockin on Heavens Door and I'm not feeling the love. I don't like Bob, I don't like GnR and I really don't like Duff's basslines. I'm sure it would work in a live context, but it's a right load of boring old ***** trying to practise it. Any better suggestions?

  10. Best to go through the PA. just treat it like vocals. You will need very decent monitoring. If I was going to play sax again I'd go for a frfr powered speaker for monitoring, with some arrangement to go straight in and take a line out to the PA... so I could control my own monitoring levels for the sax. I have a Sennheiser clip on (can't remember the model number off hand). Also had a Shure Beta 58 on a stand. With a mic on a stand use can use mic technique, but with a clip on you can leap about the stage and keep a consistent tone and volume... I prefer the clip on. PS... the Sennheiser was dynamic and didn't need phantom power.

  12. I have a MIM PJ Mustang with NP4 and NJ4SE at the bridge... with new loom and VVT control setup... so it's close. Totally subjective view... and bearing in mind that I don't want you to go off and drop £200 on pickups and then not like them... I believe I now have the bass of the gods. I wanted something vintage-y but with a bit of whoomph (don't we all). For me, it was essential to have a bridge pickup that held its own... and it does that. I now find I have huge control over tone with just the two volume controls and don't need to twiddle any controls on the amp. I've tried this out through a Rumble 100 at home (this is also my rehearsal amp). I have a Rumble 500 for gigs... but obviously not been able to try this out in anger. For me the tone is ideal for classic rock and blues. I have to point out that I'm terrible at analysing or discussing tone and all the finer points of techie-stuff. I just like what I like. You will already know this, but as the SE is a split coil the whole lot is dead quiet... you'll have to double-check the amp is on. In set-and-forget mode I tend to have P on full, J backed off very slightly and tone backed off about a third.

  14. I think the young horn players should practise more. I played sax semi-pro for years and played in whatever key was required. The singer should sing in whatever key they feel comfortable with. I've never actually met any horn players who complained about the key... and I've met a lot of embarrassingly young sax players who played better than me.

  16. Big Rumble fan here. I have a Rumble v3 500 for gigging but recently got a Rumble v3 100 as it's (even) easier to carry to rehearsals. Except I like so so much that I'm using for home practice instead of my much-loved Orange Crush 50. Not too loud for my small practice room and loud enough for rehearsals.

I must say that has really invogarated me... even though our gigging ambitions are somewhat curtailed at the moment. Never say die... go with the flow...

  20. KiOgon does dual concentric knobs. I got a loom to convert my MIM Mustang from switchable pickups to VV(dual concentric)T.
  21. This... I agree with all the above points. Can't see any circumstances where I would need an extension cab. Great amps... loud and powerful and lightweight.
  22. The fundamental problem with modding pickups is that it's difficult to audition them. Best plan for tinkerers (imo) is to change the loom and pots first. Then see how you like the original pickups.
  23. I used to like the Cramps' "Bikini Girls with Machine Guns"... it's possible, but not likely. However, I really can't believe that the Was Not Was ever "walked the dinosaur"... it just didn't happen.
  24. The last Jazz bass I had... the ferrules were a bit loose and tended to fall out. I found that through body stringing stopped that happening.
