1. "So you ask Joyce and Vicky....." one of the greatest albums of all time ever, ever in the world.com/lamented talent

 3. sorry it was a BG 250 1 X 12 I was looking at! My BG250 1x15 combo was loud enough, though a band with a loud guitar may have caused me problems
 4.
Definitely Deep Purple's Machine Head for me, from the opening to Highway Star to that amazing riff in the chorus of Space Truckin it's a phenominal album. One of my favourites.
listening to again right now after several yours. Indeed!!
 5.
Rainbow Rising. Just spotified it and had forgotten how good it is. Marvellous stuff!
yes yes yes. from that intro of Tarot Woman to the last beat of the album. You beat me to it.
 6. listen with your ears, not your eyes. At least try practicing in the dark. you will be surprised how the mind adapts
 7. I am on the lookout for a combo but was thinking nearer 250 watts. The TC electronic BG250.... are available for under £300 new. How does this compare?
 8. I tried one out a while ago. £550 new. Always fancied one. Ughhh..... ! Hope it was a one off :OL !
 9. When I was discussing what I wanted for my 'about-to-be-built' Wal Custom, Pete sked me if I wanted lined or unlined. I wasn't sure ( I was a big Mick Karn fan at the time) so he suggested dark ( low-key brown) inlays, so they were visible to me but not so much to anyone in the audience. I agreed, mainly for more for accuracy in the studio. Worked a treat.
 10. I think you 2 are extreme cases. shame. mine was no problem for the 8 months I had it
 11. tried 2. next to each other in a shop .Bitterly disappointed.
 12.
I've do both approaches - my main bass is a status but my main fretless is a £150 el cheapo effort. Never been bothered by risk of theft/damage of the status as I bought it to play not to sit at home and admire, although to be fair the fact that I could replace it from a weeks disposable income helps ...
oooOOOOooh you can afford to do that ? must be a programmer
 13.
I disagree, I had a VM with a Fender decal, had nothing but positive comments, might have been different if I'd left the Squire logo on.
yes, the good old Placebo-logo effect!
 14.
My answer to the original question is US Fenders. How they can justify such a comparatively high price for a factory mass produced instrument is beyond me.
indeed! I have played Squier basses that felt better than some USA Fenders. The mind boggles
 15.
The Music Room?
"Argents"
 16.
Ah, Andy's... I wince at the mention of their name. Prior to my mega bass-sabbatical, I sold a pair of basses through them and had to go to court to get them to cough up the cash when they were sold. Using them was a mistake, but not as big a mistake (and pretty much my biggest regret in life) as selling the basses in the first place: a pair of Wals (fretted and fretless).
ouch! What was the name of Rod Argent's shop on Denmark Steet? it stocked Wal's back in the early 80's.
 17. had one. was ok. just no love. don't believe in the Marmite theory.
 18.

I have done something similar for years. Can't be arsed to run through a Level 42 set list :OP I just pull the strings from the middle of the fingerboard and let them 'snap' down. Several times for each string. you see the dry 'gunk' flying off the fingerboard as the string cracks against it. you are shaking crap out of from between the string windings where cloth cleaning usually can't get to. if your strings are years old, it will barely be noticeable. New strings? naah... but brighter, yes.
