1.
I don't think the OP is a snob, more that he's worried about the opinion of snobs...
Probably true. My profile pic to the left is my Warwick Streamer Rockbass fretless which cost me £179. It has a lovely feel and sound, but looked bloody awful. As you can see I have given it a total makeover almost Bootsy-esque. I also blacked out the Rockbass logo on the headstock because it felt like a 'my first bass kit' for a school kid. Awful name! I have to say, the bass just feels better to play with the personalised look. ?!! You can live in a £1,000000 mansion but if the walls are just whitewashed throughout you probably won't feel comfortable in there! But yes, I must worry about people's opinions. We all do in life, otherwise we would be walking around naked!!
2.
iv never thought of other musicians personally judging you just because of your instrument O.o more the things you do on stage. if you good, then they would see how much of an awesome bassist you are..... as a lot of bassists say " its not the instrument, its the player" but anyway, have pride because your a lefty !!!!!! thats more then enough to take over the pride you would be loosing because the squier
Ha! well put mate. I actually play a right handed Westfield bass for a few songs with the strings wrong way around ( belongs to the guitarist and he won't let me swap strings around) and sure, that gets noticed more than the fact that I have the word 'Fender' on my own bass.
3. I have a Squier VM Jazz. It's a good 2nd bass. But, it had the Squire logo on the headstock. of course if we are decent enough players we should'nt worry about displaying the fact that what we are playing isn't a top-dog instrument. But, my pride, I have to say, got the better of me when I saw an ebay job-lot that included a "fender jazz" decal. I won the bid for under £4 and have had the decal put on my bass. Snob? I play function gigs, clubs etc where most punters don't know what a Fender bass is let alone a Squier, Pubs? You bet your life there will be at least half a dozen of the audience who know the whole range of Gibson and Fender models. But even then, should it matter? Shouldn't we have more pride if we can get a great grooving feel/sound out of an 'inferior' (and I use that word very cautiously!) BTW It may say Fender on my headstock, but the plate on the back still says Squier, as I would never try to fool a musician who asks about the bass, because we lovers of the the bottom-end, just know!
4. What about the band? Was Pomeroy evident? I was fascinated by the fact that he played the way I used to (still can play upside down but slapping isn't good that way for me) but there is next to nothing on him on youtube.
5. Lee Pomeroy on bass I would imagine. Left-handed with reversed stringing. The way I played for several years before my teacher took my guitar away from me! Yes, brilliant songwriting with a superb backing band, if you can see them!
6. Wow. Such passion from so many of you. I really wish I could walk into a left handed shop and spend all afternoon trying all the basses in there like many of you can! When it all comes down, it's down to preference. Having said that, so many positive comments and thousands of recordings can't be wrong. It seems that the Precision is an instrument without bells and whistles that may hide the true qualities of the player. Yes?!! I look at my favourite bassist, Pino, and see he plays a Precision these days. Hmmm....food for thought, with a cherry on top!
7.
I was just about to start a slightly different version of this as I feel a Fender P is probably a bit out of my budget. So I hope you don't mind me dropping in on this thread! I was looking at Squiers and the Vintage V4 range as a starting point and was after a few comments - particularly on the Vintage basses as they seem to be similarly spec'd but that bit cheaper? There was a white V4 on evilbay getting no love at all that looked in decent condition (apart from a dodgy sticker) - my favourite hue for a P. For info. I've c. £200 +/- to spend. What are the Squier MIJ basses like? Cheers
I'm waiting for the delivery of a Babicz bridge which will be going on my Squire VM Jazz. I am hoping it will add a little more distinction to the sound. It is a pretty decent bass that, as ezbass said, is worth buying with a view to upgrading bits (some say they feel the sound is fine with current pick-ups, I'm undecided until installation of the bridge) I've gone back to using my Wal live as the Squire is a bit muddy on the bottom E past the 5th fret. I can definitely say that mine doesn't feel 'right' with me. I bought it because it was a left handed model in Sounds Live and thought it might grow on me. I will continue to use it as a back up bass, but it isn't 'love'!
8. Well well well. I received an email from the seller saying he is pulling out of the deal because he prefers a 'face to face' deal rather than post it. That's after over a weeks worth of emailing and agreeing to do it through Paypal. That's it. I've decided my next bass will be a Precision! It's on gumtree if you are interested and live nearby the seller.
9. A simple question that I am sure has many answers/reasons, but if you had to put it into one sentence, what makes it the king of the basses for you? I am sure that this has been asked (tried a search) but.......Squire Versus Fender....that much difference? I have never owned or even tried one (except in a shop playing a R/H upside down) so I want to know how I might be missing out!
10. Last night I watched the guitarist in my band collapse his Stagg case in about 10 seconds flat! He has had it for at least 2 years that I know of so he has done it many times, Many many times, yet it remains intact and stable. Believe me, this guy won't let anyone even touch his Gibson's, let alone play ( oh yes, he has issues!). Nice to have a Fender badge (all due respect) but it's a stand, not a sexy guitar enhancing your stage presence. I would get one, but there's never enough room on my side of the stage
11.
That's definitely not true - there are Chinese basses with the serial between the machine heads, such as this one: And there are German basses with the serial number below the machine heads, or on the top of the headstock, and probably some with serial numbers in a few other places too!
ha! I know nothing! Just what someone told me. From the official Warwick site? sorry
12. Resprays are £90 - if he has to buy a colour he doesn't have its extra for the paint. A guitar luthier/builder her in Newcastle. let me know if you ever need his contact details.
13. thanks everyone. Ive asked the seller a few times but I don't think he knows much about this bass. perhaps he's not as nutty as I am on basses! I had toyed with the idea of a Fender precision as I have a Wal Custom from 1984. I have asked myself if the warwick and Wal would be similar?
14. I really dislike the natural finish on mine. I think it cheapens the look. Think I would prefer the wood naked. Considered having it coloured (Black cos I'm not the tallest and it's a big body!) but at £90...the bass only cost £270 Still awaiting the arrival of a Babicz bridge.....5 weeks.....coming from the far.......far east....via a certain renowned London Bass shop...zzzz....zzzzzzzzz.......... refund!!!!
15. if the serial number is on the back of the headstock between the machine heads, it's pre-2010. = German made, so I am told.
16. yeah, no left handed. How much more work is it to produce one? If cheapo companies (with all due respect to Johnson etc) make the effort, why can't we have a Fender Jag??!!
17. Guitarist in my current (!) band swears by his, and his houses 3 Les Paul's total value around 6 grand. Looks after them like babies, so believe me, if they didn't do the job he wouldn't use one. saw them on ebay recently for 45 quid ( 6 guitar version). Guitar Guitar selling them for over 70. doh!
18. Wow! Thanks so much throwoff! Don't understand "Hardware upcharge" ?? I hope I am buying a decent bass as I have never tried a Warwick, but I like what I have heard. Much appreciated
19. Hi Apologies for jumping in without thoroughly searching for the right topic area, but I am considering buying a s/h Warwick Corvette standard (l/h) and was wondering if anyone recognised the wood of the body? I don't think it's Bubunga... The serial number is between the machine heads on the back of the headstock, so that means it is pre 2010 I beleive. Many thanks for any help! 20. I have an Ibanez copy of the Dan Armstrong 'see-thru' plexiglass bass which was issued from '69 for a few years. Unfortunately some 30 plus years ago I attempted to rectify a pick-up problem and have managed to lose the pick-ups, pots, knobs and bridge saddle! Does anyone have any idea which type of pick-ups would fit the bass? I don't mind having to modify the body as I will never be able to restore the bass to it's original state. This is very much a sentimental bass that I would like to get up and running. The bass cost me a mere £50 way back then so I am prepared to spend a couple of hundred £ on it. Help?!!
21. 22. not too far from yourself. Tyneside I would prefer the 4 x 10 despite the weight difference.1 x 15 is a bit to dull on its own from past experience. I would be interested to hear your price for the 4 x 10. you can always let me know via pm thanks
23. I'm interested...but mainly the 4 x 10 as the size of the 2 together will have the band's van owner complaining about the weight.
24. I had a guy buy my amp from me today and he brought along his friends bass to try it out. It was a 1961 Gibson EB O,but some numbskull had decided to spray it white 30 years ago! It very good condition otherwise Of course it's just the single pick up, but how much would it have been worth had it been left it's original colour?(the red was beginning to show through atr the headstock where the serial number is. The guy said his friend would sell it to him (and him alone...)for about £100! A pretty poor bass by todays standards that has clearly lost tons of value due to the white paint job, but still....£100 for a '61 Gibson?
