For those that find a standard mandolin to tight on the fretboard but the bouzouki too long, there is the octave mandola, known as the octave mandolin in the USA which seems a more sensible name to me as that is what it is. A mandolin tuned an octave lower. This is mine, made by Dorset luthier Robin Greenwood:

  16. This urban wood seems to be a bit of a thing for US makers. Taylor are making a thing of it for their acoustics.

  23. It looks like the one used by the bassist in the Dave Clark 5 back in the day when I think they were sponsored by Vox. Seemed to alternate between one of these and a teardrop bass. Later he moved onto a Fender P.
