Joni; jaco & Pat. Doesn’t get much better
Hellzero replied to Grahambythesea's topic in General Discussion
He doesn't seem to use a fretted Jazz Bass, he's using one, on the first track. Love these Joni Mitchell years when he was really playing bass and not showing off. 😃 -
First of all, I'm a huge Beatles fan as without them, the music wouldn't be the same today as they really influenced everyone, even those pretending the opposite. There are a few bass players milestones in bass playing and contribution to the fame of this instrument. The first of all being Monk Montgomery, the first electric bass player who, pushed by the visionary Lionel Hampton, used it and adopted it. For the first time, the bass wasn't just a rhythmic instrument whose notes weren't heard, but a rhythmic instrument whose notes can contribute to the melody. The second milestone is, of course, James Jamerson with his complex melodic lines that he was able to play completely drunk. The third is the always forgotten Carol Kaye known for her ability to record bass or guitar quicker and better than any other musician, maybe not as inventive as others, but always perfect and playing what she was asked. The fourth is Paul McCartney as he had integrated the previous musicians knowledge (often without even knowing it as he likes to say) in his approach of bass and made the bass heard on any record. He is also very melodic in his playing, which pushed the bass to the front and at the same level as guitars. The fifth is Jaco Pastorius even if Percy Jones was playing fretless as a lead instrument before him, Jaco was always under the spotlight liking to show off. And don't forget that if Paul is under appreciated, it's only because he's a heavy smoker cheapskate vegetarian... 🤣

She is an excellent jazz guitar player before being an amazing bass player. 😉

A Leduc Masterpiece 5 (and headless would even be better) will tick all the boxes, but you'll have to buy it second hand as Christophe is not building solid body instruments anymore and is slowly retiring from the business. Also check Noguera in France too, but a Leduc Masterpiece with the dummy coil and the EL-5 preamp is quite impossible to beat. I too own, amongst others, a Le Fay (Remington Steele 6 RHT CC CAP Big Block), some Leduc's, some Noguera's and a rare Ibanez AFR A104F, so I know what ergonomics means. And I've owned a lot of basses over the 3 last decades.

So you can't read or write and you're a X star nominated 8 times ? Wow.

Maintenant, reste à apprendre à parler correctement, soit français. 🤣

Very very nice. I do like these Ned Steinberger headstocks too. 👍

It's indeed really strange that this really great head (had 2 of them) is so much, I think I can say it, hated when the other one with the exact same power amp (only one channel and no compressor) is overloved just because it is made in the USA, overpriced and received overmarketing... Strange days as people don't buy with their own ears and own taste.

I see what you'd like to do, BUT (yes it's a big but) you'll have tracks without the real dynamic of a live player, so the final result will be biased. For instance the transient response and the whole dynamic details of the bass will be totally lost, because of the recording process itself even if it's in wave 24 bits at 96 kHz. This means that in the real world, the speakers may start to distort or fart way more earlier than with a bass plugged straight in and I'm not even starting the whole impedance matching problems, which can highly bias the final judgement. Tough and straight answer, I know, but it will really help you.

That's it @Downunderwonder.

I have an answer most of you won't like. Here it is and it's a known fact : Homo sapiens seems unable to adapt to an environment and MUST adapt the environment to his liking. For once try to use the 4% of your remaining homo neanderthalensis genes and adapt yourself to this (new) environment. Told you...

Don't forget to reposition the pickup accordingly to the 32 inches scale. Now you can start the making some firewood. 🤣 PS : The end of the top horn is generally an octave indicator, so aligned with the 12th fret and it's a minor adjustment. 😉 PS bis : Do you know the exact position of a Stingray pickup ?

Try the old procedure : Press on/off and volume simultaneously.

What's your phone @Downunderwonder ?

Take the 50% refund as the covers will have many many other marks in a short time period.

And CTRL + V to copy it where you want... as it's a command similar to copy-paste. On a smartphone just slide your finger from the top, the "Screenshot" option will appear. It will become a png file that you can share immediately or find in your files (search the recent ones). I looks like this or similar :

@lownote12 Same for me, for now. GAS indicator is very very low. That said, I have owned so many basses and amps that I almost can say that I have tried everything and the ones I didn't try have absolutely no bass appeal. My last GAS was 2 Trace Elliot combos (BLX 130 SM and 1210 fridge) bought for very silly money and sold back immediately because there's nothing decent (to me as a fretless player) coming out of these really way too heavy boxes. That said, I keep watching the ads, but there's nothing I fancy. I have SES (Selling Everything Syndrome) now, just keeping what I like and use, but certainly not wanting to start another collection. And I'm really HAPPY !

As everybody said : ear fatigue.
