1. Had a great time as always, and as always didn't get to do everything I wanted or to chat to as many people as I would have liked - but that's what the next Bash is for! The organisation is fantastic. Been able to wind a rig up in the 'loud room', play with a drummer and guitarist in the 'jam room', and try out gear in the 'quiet room' and worshops in the theatre, great gear and great people. Mucho thanks to Clarky for the lift, and to Urb for my impromptue lesson in slapping! My thanks too to the organisers and workshop guys. How much did we raise? BTW I still don't understand compressors, but now thanks to s1m0n I don't understand them in a far more scientific way
2. i love this thread. I'm living vicariously through you all as my gigging situation is somewhat dire at the moment
3. sure colour matters, just as looks do. What Truckstop said really. I do like none standard colours though. Why would you want to be like everyone else?
4.
Not surprisingly, due to his impending broken leg operation, Happy Jack will not be coming along to the BassBash
10.
USA mate, and he has 2 of them, I found them both for him
ok, will have to settle for pics of him gigging it. If you'd be so kind as to keep us informed...
11. whereabouts is he? If he gigs with it I'd love to see it!
12.
Let's look at it another way: Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most revered composers in music history. He had lost all his hearing ability by the time he wrote some of his greatest works (such as the late quartets). My question is, would these works have been any more interesting, thrilling, or more accomplished, if he had been able to hear a goddam thing?Well. we'll never know, but does that in any way throw doubt on the assumption that in general it's better for a musician to have good hearing than to be stone deaf? Does it mean that wearing ear-plugs to protect our hearing is a waste of time? If you can't be arsed to learn to read music, that's really up to you. But please spare us the b/s "reasons" as to why it doesn't matter. I doubt you're convincing anyone, even yourself
Mahler though so which is why he reorchestrated some of Beethoven's works. I like to paraphrase Pratchett 'going deaf for Beethoven didn't stop him hearing the music, it just stopped him hearing the distractions'.
13.
He certainly wouldn't be any worse.
this
14. looking good
15.
Steve Harris from Iron Maiden is famous for playing with his nails
is what I was gonna say I keep the little finger nail on my picking hand a tad longer, for hard staccato strumming - usually end of song posing.
16. http://www.luckymojo.com/crossroads.html some practical advice here.
17. over the years: strings have snapped, strap button has come off, and the input socket played up. And on a guitar the volume pot froze - in the off position.
18. did you get all your money back, or your money less paypal fees?
19.
First gig with new band Rattlin Bone last night at The Miller near London Bridge. Fantastic evening (lots of burlesque, circus showpeople, Halloween dressing up etc) and my first gig on DB. Here's a pic or two. You can't even see the horn section who are left of stage. There were 15 of us in total!
glad the hand healed in time! I'm guessing it was still a bit sore after?
20. Blues Brothers. /thread.
21.
+1 Is it still a good price? Do you still want it? Start bargaining. If he's that skint he'll probably haggle.
+1
22. Interesting how McCartney opted for the Hofner because it was a cheaper imitation of the Gibson which was a lot more expensive. Gibson stopped making their violin-bass and the rest is history. Does the a-list almost-billionaire superstar and popular culture icon give a rats ass about disparaging comments on a bass forum? As he employs teams of people to cultivate and maintain a specific media image, it's possible he might. But I doubt it. Disappointing how any thread on Macca always seems to degenerate in to the same old argument though.
23. I've never lost out at an audition because I can read, but I have lost out because I can't do backing vocals - sing and play at the same time.
24. is that the guy who sold out Brixton Academy while unsigned?
