What a chancer!

I'd say avoid any liquid/fluid that could soak into the bare wood or wick into cracks in the finish. My starting point would be a gentle wipe over with a soft cloth just barely dampened with white spirit immediately followed by a bit of 'heavy breathing'/buffing with a clean, dry cloth. Do an initial trial on a small area on the back of the body and see how it looks after a few hours first.

[/quote] I'm running a TE AH300SMC through an Ashdown ABM210 Neo plus (when needed) a TE Compact 115 re-loaded with a 300W Celestion. All quite warm, tight, punchy and reasonably portable - though I'll be replacing the 115 with a Barefaced BB2. It's that TE pre-shape button that does it for me every time!

When I was a skint teenager in the '60s, I could only afford to buy 'must-have' singles. I'd buy one, get it home, and compulsively play it to death for hours or even days. Nowadays, it's must-have basslines - often quite simple ones - that have an addictive hook and just feel 'so right' that it makes me happy playing along with the song. Just had a read of the BH550 review on Guitar Interactive Mag - very impressed!!

What a timely post is this - I'm looking for a new amp and the LH500 and TX600 were on the shortlist (although the sixer reportedly punch well below its weight). Interestingly, if you Google Hartke you'll find the manufacturer's own website is notable by its absence.

The 3 pups coupled with a Strat-style 5-position switch and a push/pull volume pot give 7 instantly selectable, clearly differentiated voices (there's a tone pot too). The other 2 basses pictured with it have gone, but the Fender's a keeper.

This is getting really interesting. At the moment I'm leaning towards P/JJ pups with 2-band active electronics incorporating single vol, pan, treble, bass, active/passive and single coil J-JJ switching. I've been offered a try of a bass with exactly that setup, so that will be the decider.

Thanks for the useful info everybody but still not clear: is it still worth having a pup selector switch if I go for an active bass?

Brilliant! I can imagine the relief when you saw that screw come out. Your mate must have nerves of steel - mind you, it's a bit different when it's not your own bass that you're drilling holes in.

Just deciding on a new bass and not sure which way to go with the electronics. Never owned an active but my preferred control layout on passive basses is 2 pups with 3-way selector switch plus 1 vol and 1 tone pot. With active electronics, do you get a pan knob that effectively does an even better job than a selector switch by allowing you to steplessly sweep across the complete tonal spectrum (assuming you have the volume up on both pups)? Also, as my amp head has 2 inputs - active and passive - could I gig with an active and a passive bass both plugged in at the same time to allow for a quick change-over between songs (obviously with the volume turned down on the one I'm not playing)?
