  1. On a serious note; sorry can't help it's built in my psyche, how about a "Profound" of bassists. From the phrase Basso Profundo (or Profondo), Latin for deep bass. It might be written on a score somewhere. It sounds obscure enough to be a question on "The Chase".
  2. Cosmo's Factory was brilliant. The early productions were spot on. Fortunate Son is a classic. Of the slower songs "Have you ever Seen the Rain" is superb. Too many of the songs in the last 20 -30 years are spoiled by John Fogerty playing at 100mph & or the pitch being set too high. Watch the duo with Bruce Springsteen, arrh!! arrh!!. The Eagles: well crafted songs & great harmonies, but for me they lack magic.
  3. PS. For the mounting information & dimensions, download the datasheet from here... https://www.beyma.com/en/products/c/low-mid-frequency/115WRS408/altavoz-15wrs400-8-oh/
  4. Hello Bigwan. Using your supplied box measurements, my earlier suggestions didn't work out, but I think I may have found the answer. Without making any physical changes to the Laney cab and assuming that the two separate enclosures are well sealed between them, i.e 2 discrete & seperate air-tight enclosures linked together, I tried modelling the Beyma 15 WRS400 in a volume of 96.8 (gross) 94litres (net of drive unit & ports) & with two 4" ports. Well, I reckon it will do the business. You end up with a very conservative power handling of 295 watts per drive unit, that is just before xMax. System tuning is in the region of 52Hz. If port chuffing is ever audible or a problem just replace the existing ports with 100mm internal diameter drain pipe and cut to a length of 19cm This will lower the tuning to 43.5Hz & the chuffing will be gone.
  5. Meanwhile, you can have a look at these. https://faitalpro.com/en/products/LF_Loudspeakers/product_details/index.php?id=151060110 https://www.fane-international.com/view-product/SOVEREIGN-15-600LF#tab-1
  6. Hello Bigwan, What's the size of the the old Laney beast. Any idea of the internal volume and secondly, (couldn't find any online pics) what is the diameter and length of any ports? 15" speakers seem to need between 50 & 150 litres each to work well in a cabinet. A lot of variation. Let me know the figures.
  7. Agreed, but in this case is looks like the OP is trying to make the best of a bad job.
  8. According to a rough & ready winISD run-through, the SICA drive unit works best in an internal volume of 20-25litres. An an example, using winISD's net volume of 23 litres, a 4" port you'll about 19.30cm long will give you tuning of 62Hz. So make the volume about 25.50 litres and allow 2.5litres for the space occupied by the drive unit and the port. My suggestion would be to reduce the internal volume to the above size using a number of hard polystyrene packing pieces or any other solid but lightweight material.
  9. https://www.theregister.com/2021/03/19/audacity_3/ Worth a read for changes and limitations.
  10. This is the place to start looking:- https://www.wilmslowaudio.co.uk/speaker-kits-1-c.asp
  11. If you want the real McCoy and a chance of picking up a schematic for the 126 Bass Combo then start looking here - https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/unofficialacousticcontrolcorpmessageboard/ Today, the names for "Acoustic" are confusing, but as Bassman Paul & stereoplayer have said the "acousticamplificationcompany" is owned by the Guitar Center. The link above is for the enthusiasts, particularly a man named George Grexa who builds the stuff which is as close as possible to the original. See the words Acoustic USA and GPG.
  12. Contact "dr.decibel" at Celestion and give him the long code on the side of the magnet, beginning 070 K 4670 / 09. 15" cast-frame etc. They will be able to tell you the identity of the speaker & probably some of the specification, quite quickly. https@//celestion.com/contact/
  13. In general, there isn't much choice for 6 / 6.5 inch drivers giving a good bass response. Add to that your diverse needs - needing a solution for double bass as well - and the search results are meagre. As Phil Starr mentioned above, there is the FANE Sovereign 6 100. Bill Fitzmaurice (in his post from about an hour ago) makes the critical point; what have you got now? I'll add 2 more; what's the internal volume of the box? My guess is about 7-10 litres. Secondly, are there any ports to the box. If we know that, then there may be an alternative, but don't expect "agedhorse's" comments not to ring true.
  14. Help required to find an old song. One for those with an encylopaedic knowledge of the early sixties. A Beatles cover, I think it was "Money" by Sounds Incorporated. Was it was on the green Columbia label? Please search the brain archives.
  15. I'm sticking with CD's. I bought 7 overall for Christmas, of which 5 were for Mrs B and two for both of us. Three of the 7 were classical and the other 2 were past rock-pop classics. Music-Magpie was good for 4 of the discs. No point in having a good hi-fi if you don't feed it with quality. If we then want to rip to mp3 for the car then it's all possible; the car also still has a CD/mp3 player & a wacky SD card slot. Old laptop & this new desktop both with DVD/re-writers. Vinyl was the quality of it's time, that time has now past. Sure, mp3's, Spotify and assorted download sources are OK for general listening, as has been said, but when I want to bathe in the best classical or jazz then only CD's do the job. Vinyl buys are reserved for feeding to my grandson on his birthday & Christmas.
  16. Lownote12 is daisy chaining his two 8 Ohm speakers. Series? For the impedancely challenged like me, what is the resulting impedance shown to amp? Is the input power equally distributed across the 6 drivers? What is the overall power handling of the speaker pair?
  17. You could do worse than here - https://www.woodbrass.com/en-gb/
  18. That calls for another video and test. Nice video work.
  19. The Ibanez. The Vox does not even have an aux-in socket for playing along to your favourite music tracks from an external sound source such as a mobile phone or mp3 player. Both products are just OK for quiet "bedroom" practice.
  20. It looks possible that the 121-4 speakers in Fryer's & Paul S's were not the original, but they could be a correct replacement (3 brown cones & 1 black?). Couldn't find any useful link to the model 121-4 or the code 96000416. However, judging by this link - https://assets.peavey.com/category/manuals/711_17511.pdf a Peavey "Sheffield" TXF 1035 was the speaker fitted in various TVX's & the 8 ohm TVF. This link - https://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Peavey-Sheffield-1035-Replacement-8-Ohm-Sub-10-Speaker-for-410TX-210TX-810TX-Cabinet-PVI-100-Mic-PEAVEY-PACKAGE-367 gives you the T/S parameters for the 1035. Peavey Electronics UK Service agent is /was in Corby @ 01536 461234 or customer service @ peavey.com & they may be able to help you with matching up the 121-4 & reference 96000416 (presumably for all 4 drive-units) to the TXF 1035 then you will have accurate info for matching fryers' speakers to a suitable cab. More on that another time. If you put the TXF 1035 parameters into cabinet matching software, the results come out very similar to Lozz's suggestion of the Eminence Beta's and Phil Starr's graph (black) of the "bass response in a 20L cab".
  21. woodbrass.com (French) appear to be similar to Thomann. Unless otherwise stated, articles seem to have a 3 year guarantee and there is a 30 day returns "condition of business". I bought my bass from them some years ago. It arrived well packed & was delivered in about 5 days.
  22. If you calculate upon a 100W input, nothing changes except the pressure within the port as I said previously. Remember Phil's comment about squeezing a balloon. The up-side:- if you change the smaller vent dimension to 3.8cm you are given a port length of 19.26cm i.e 19.3cm. You will need an air gap beyond the end of the port. If it's possible, make it equal to at least 3.8cm. The down-side:- the air velocity calculation shows a rise to 18m/s at 63Hz. Balloon squeezed, but still within recommended bounds.
  23. winISD calculates the tuning based upon speaker volume being linked to drive-unit parameters. It's giving an optimum result at one signal level only. As the amp signal/voltage increases, the speaker is pushed harder and increases the air pressure inside the cabinet. The tuning will stay the same, but the air pressure within the port rises and rises. Do you still only need to run the speakers at half your amplifiers rated output (150w)? I've run a variety of models with different amplifier inputs & enclosure volumes using your earlier rough guide to the speaker, and I 've found that with an 11.4L enclosure and a 75w signal from the amplifier, the 30Hz speaker output is at least -30dB below the output at 60Hz. With filters switched in, the difference is even larger; so large, it goes off the bottom of the scale. With a rectangular vent of 3.8 x 10cm (internal) and tuning set to 64Hz, the calculated port length is 19.26cm. Is this port length impracticable? The peak air velocity through the port is only 15.7 @ 63Hz. At the same frequency and with the 60Hz filter switched in, output from the speaker is down -4.6dB. Chuffing is not going to be an issue. With a 75w input the speaker is calculated to deliver 108dB from 80Hz & upwards, and with the 60Hz filter in the chain, xmax is not exceeded, even down to Zero Hz.
  24. The journey. In the early 70's I read too many magazines & caught the bug. Went to hi-fi shows, sat-in on listening panels, read more mags & dipped into hi-fi shops for a listen & drool - probably saw Bassaces' Quad. Lust but not enough cash. Started with a 10w per channel Amstrad!! Dad and I paired it with a Wharfedale Linton home built kit. 1976, a JVC cassette deck. 1977, an Alba UA 900 33w p/c amp, "a poor man's Sugden" (stil got it wrapped up in the loft). This was followed by another (bigger of course & on a stand) ) home built loudspeaker based on an 8" Dalesford speaker and a Shackman Electrostatic for mids &treble. Mmmm, nice. Went to Alex Shackman's house in Barnet for a personal audition. About '77, found Graham's Hi-fi in Islington. Really upmarket. Left with an Edinburgh Wireless FM tuner (Nytech in disguise) and a pair of PWB Electrostatic Headphones. Now we're motoring. Discovered Direct-Cut discs - Dave Grusin "Mountain Dance" was one. The PWB transformer failed in the 90's. Still in '78, bought an AR Sugden turntable & GH Hadcock tone arm. They're still parked in the hi-fi unit, loved but unused. Tweaked the platter with an anti-resonace damping pad. Married and moved. Walking to the car-park after work and spotted a Sugden A48 II in a record shop window!! It was a shop demo unit; I had to have it. It lasted about 12 years until I re-fitted the wrong plug into the wrong socket (hi-fi ffurniture re-fit) and blew an output transistor. Off to Sugden for £120 repair. I did a similar trick (with the mains extension socket thing on the back) early in the new century. There was a bang. Anybody want an old Sugden to fiddle with; A 48II, Serial No. 5723 awaits your screwdriver & soldering iron. Too embarrassed to send it back to Sugden again, so opted for a nice Denon 455 receiver which would have cost less than a major Sugden repair. Aiwa cassette deck bought in late 80's. Now parked and unused. I'm down to 20 cassettes. In the mid-late 90's CD's were the thing. More magazine articles. Marantz this, Marantz that - the best in it's class etc,. Went to Audio T in Enfield with my own CD's. "No sir, you don't need to spend extra on our extended warranties. These products are all very reliable." Auditioned Marantz ?67, a £600 Audiolab and a YamahaCDX 550. "The Marantz is a little more exciting" said the man. Thank you, said I. I started to become aware that I was listening to the eqipment (i knew the music backwards) but was the "excitement" accurate or was it showroom appeal? I came out with the Yamaha. I changed the cd-tray drive belt last year. If the electronics fails I'll change it, but not otherwise. Probably 24 years + amd counting. Circa 2015 bought a Van Den Huul interconnect for the CD player - a clear difference in both the revelation of detail & smooth presentation of the mids & high-mids. 70th birthday treat - Monitor Audio Bronze floor-standers. Great for cathedral organ music. Last year, Beyer Dynamics DT880's. Oh yes! LP's being phased out, the weak & unloved ones go to a local vinyl re-seller or Oxfam, the top one's are going to my grandson and many old/lesser CD's are being digitised. Maybe one day it'll all come down to a Brennan? Well, maybe one CD for the birthday & one for Christmas.
