I've only ever bought one bass new, and that was shop-damaged. There's plenty of bargains to be had second hand, it being shiny isnt enough to tempt me to spend the difference and buy a new one.

Don't agree that wiring a plug is a binary thing - I can see a difference between a plug I wired and one done by my electrician neighbour, and he is quicker at it
