1. Learnjazzstandards is a great website resource for anyone starting to learn jazz bass. Tons of good stuff on there.
2.
There's a clue in my User name: '33' is France, '53' is Mayenne, halfway between Le Mans and Rennes. Pop in for a cup of tea if you're in the region.
Ah Ok. Should've worked that one out. Nice up there. Hope the music scene is busy and the gigs are good. We pass through from time to time on the way to the North West and past Le Mans on the motorway heading up to Ouistreham for the ferry. The final upshot of all this is that the venue tried to replace us with a Guitar/Vocalist who is a guy we have worked with dozens of times and deps for us occasionally and is one of our best mates, he has turned them down and now they have no entertainment for one of their busiest events of the year. Tough s***. Thanks everyone for your help and comments Steve
3. Thanks for all your comments, I will talk to MU today and see if they have jurisdiction beyond the UK. Where are you based Douglas?
4. Thanks everyone for the information. The only "contract" is an agreement on an e-mail detailing the date and the fee. Whilst we would prefer not to lose the gig we have found out today that he has pulled similar tricks before. We will proceed with caution. Steve
5. Good Afternoon All Can anyone tell me if MU contracts are normally used/enforceable outside the UK? We are in France. We have a problem with a venue that has a long running dispute with another venue and have told us "if you play there we will cancel". We are calling his bluff for the moment and have told him that his dispute is not our problem and we aren't going to be told where we can or can't play but any advice would be welcome. Thanks Steve
6. My experience pretty much reflects those above, if it is a song I know I can usually do it on the fly. I started working with a different band recently and when I asked for the key for a certain song I was told "Capo 5". After several weeks we have finally got to a point where we are all playing the same key, but have all got chord sheets sourced from different places which although supposed to be the same song in the same key are often totally different.
7. Squier CV Jazz with TI Jazz Flats - lovely.
8. Guitars of all kinds carry 3.2% duty:- http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/measures.jsp?Lang=en&SimDate=20160227&Taric=9200000000&LangDescr=en The duty is based on the value of the item if it includes shipping and insurance, or the supplier may put it separately on the invoice but it is still included for duty purposes. VAT is 20% of the value of the item (including shipping and insurance) plus the duty. The carrier will almost certainly add a clearance fee and a small percentage for prepaying the duty and VAT to customs.
9. I think most branches of Staples act as DHL drop off points.
10. I have a jazz with TI jazz flats that I now use specifically when I am with a jazz quartet and get good comments from my band mates.
11. Just started playing with a jazz quartet and found there is so much out there with cracking bass lines. Blue Bossa is lovely.
12.
Steve, that's a great resource and not just for 'starters'
Hi Roger Long time no see, how are you these days??. I have been in France for 4 years now where there is a massive shortage of bass players in all genres so I get to play all sorts of stuff that I never tried before. Oh... and sometimes the sun shines. Steve
13. I am just starting out with a quartet doing jazz standards (piano/sax/bass/drums) and finding it far more satisfying than rock/blues covers with my other band. I am finding this a great resource:- http://www.learnjazzstandards.com/ Hope it helps Steve
14. Agree with Sweet Home Alabama easy to play. A good one with a girl singer is Next To Me - Emilie Sande, popular with the audience, can be played four in a bar on root notes and repetitive three chords. Easy to learn. Anything 12 bar is good and you won't need a music stand for those. We do Knocking on Heavens Door in a reggae feel, easy play and comes over well. Forget the audience and enjoy the experience.
15. The Wanch in Wanchai has an open mic on Mondays and live music most nights I think. Not been in HK for a while though but a lot of bars in Wanchai had live music.
16.
Whenever I fit a new set - which is generally only when I get a new bass before fitting I give them a good rub down with Surgical Spirits on a cotton pad - rub until no more black comes off. I'm with WOT - GHS Precision Flats are my fave on P bass, particularly a wide 'C' neck. Status Flats are great VFM & I like them best on a 'B' nut. TI JF344s on a Jazz Bass IMHO a perfect match
I have TI Jazz Flats on a Squier VM Jazz and get a beautiful warm sound. I am doing a lot of Jazz and Standards at the moment and it works perfectly.
17. Hotel California for me. Constant repetitive arpeggiation ties me in knots.
18.
Can I come to? Are these places close to Bolton?
Of course you can come. You can get flight from Leeds or Liverpool to Limoges on Ryanair and camp at the site (Ryanair will charge more for the tent than for you though). You can use my Jazz, they will charge a fortune to bring a bass as well. Or you could come on your bike on the deserted French motorways but careful of the gendarmes.
19.
Despite being just a 4 pce inc vocalist, we have a French guitarist that's fallen in love with Marshall 4x12 cabs (yes, plural)
If they are anything the Trace 4 x 12 that I have played through a couple of times recently the are ballbreakingly heavy as well. Our guitarist organises open mics at Lac Du Mondon (Nr St Leger Magnazeix) on the first Saturday of each month (5th September and 3rd October next two) which are getting popular and attracting some good musicians now, we usually do a short spot at that and then a jam with some of the musicians who have played earlier if you fancy that. I am at Mortemart (near Bellac) and we are having a bit of a do for friends and neighbours on 11th September in the garden (about 5pm), you are welcome to come for that also.
20.
You might end up prepared for the wrong version ;-) i'd prepare some dirty synth sound just in case https://www.youtube....h?v=ujcgcvOD_wc I'll get me coat :-P
Ha Ha - that is just wrong.
21.
We were in Le Dorat not far from you a few weeks ago playing in La Petite Fontaine. Small world. Have a good gig.
I know it well, we have seen gigs there a few times. Not the place for lots of equipment though.
22. Excellent thanks, I will try that and see if I can make it sound anything close. The gig is not all that far from you close to Magnac Laval. Let you know how I get on. Steve
