1. First bassline I ever learnt back about a million years ago.
2.
Complete with the famous (and pretty much unused) S1 switch...OK, why not. Do I need to bring an amp?
Be interested to see how this compares with my S1Jazz - different beast I know but interesting anyway.
3. We have been looking at a Bash in May or June at NAS's place in Worcestershire, which might be a long way for some folk (90 miles for me), but we get a stately home and 1300 acres to have our bash in, with no noise worries, as the neighbours are half a mile away. Nick reckons he can accommodate between 50 and 100 people (more if the weather is good). Plus we can raise a little bit of money for Nick's charities at the same time (see the "News of NAS" thread somewhere on here). Those who went last year can testify to how great a venue this is, and I suppose there wouldn't be the time constraints of using a "commercial" venue. If anyone thinks this is a worthwhile idea let's know, and I will liaise with Nick about some organisation. Steve
4.
The two guitarists always referred to the S-1 on my Jazz as the loud button. When it's off, it definitely sounds like a Jazz. When it's on, the bass has more thump.
Thats how I would describe it - not really a P sound.
5. Thanks for all this. I like quite a "soft" sound as opposed to "hard and punchy". I suppose almost to sound like an upright (that might no be the best description, but I am sure you see where I'm coming from). I think I will give it a try and see what I get.
6. Hi All Is anybody using flats on a Jazz - and is it good bad or indifferent?? Steve
7.
It's been done before, and as long as you know they're alright then i don't really see the problem. Telling them no presents a bit of an unwelcoming image, and that's not an image the site really want's to have i'd think. Anyone can join the forum, so why can't any bassist come to the bash? Mrs Tinman doesn't play bass (i don't think?) but we all love her
But she is a BC'er
8. Hi Peedee Welcome aboard. I can see you will be a valuable asset here for some of us learners. Steve
9.
Well actually they do have that kind of difference. You don't seem to be listening. I have used their services. I have PAID those 'silly numbers', as you call them. The price I got from them was something like 70% cheaper than going straight to DHL. I have paid for the service, do you want to see the invoice? The waybill? Hell, the DHL tracking page still has the item I sent still on it. Don't understand why you're arguing really, are you happy paying far more than you need to? Have a look on the site, find out for yourself and thank me later if you like.
I'm not arguing. I am sure these kind of quotes are there and you can take advantage of them, but this is part of my job, I deal with all these people, and believe me 99 times out a 100 you get what you pay for, and I have seen some disasters.
10.
I hope you're not still suggesting that the prices I have are wrong?
Hi Waldo No, but if people want to quote silly numbers that is their issue. I have a printed tariff from UPS and simply quoted the price from the tariff, and Transglobal should have something similar. They may a get little bit bigger discount, but not that kind of difference.
11.
There's a thing I like to do called, 'shopping around'. I've just gotten a quote for shipping to Ireland (again, using the same dimensions) and got a quote of £26.91, not insured. with DHL Europlus road service as the carrier. DHL Air express would cost you £67.74+ vat fully insured. Well it is 'credible' becuase that's the quote I've been given and it's also not much more than what I paid to have a bass sent to the US. See for yourself: http://www.transglobal.org.uk/default.asp It doesn't matter anyway, if anything have shown that you're all paying too much for your shipping though!
Even odder is that Transglobal uses UPS, same as me.
12. I think you will find that it is Schenkers, but I will check tomorrow and let you know. Schenkers Heathrow is 0208 890 8899
13.
I know. Out of curiousity I've just got a quote for shipping to the Philippines, using the the dimensions of the parcel containing the bass I sent to the US, plus a little bit more each just in case (which is a fair assumption, I think) and the price is £79.11 plus £22.50 for £1500 insurance. DHL is the carrier, 2-3 days delivery time. Whoever got a quote of £250.....
I get a big discount from UPS, and the rate I gave was the price from UPS to me. I would recheck that with DHL, £79.11 is not really credible for a bass to go all that way.
14. To find the bit of magic that turns me from a humdrum bassist to someone who can play anything, first time, by ear, without reference to charts or dots.
15. Saturday better for me, and I am interested in the VMJ to compare against my USA Jazz.
16. Make that cost £204.39, fuel surcharge is reduced from Monday. Steve
17.
Gman how much more do we need to be able to send it DHL ?
Hi Chaps Based on a box say 48 x 24 x 12inches, I can get it from UPS for £209.72, and insurance for £1400 will be £14.00, and I will happily throw that in for free. I have made that a pretty generous box size, so anything smaller will be less. I also have an account with them, so I can make the arrangements, pay it on my account (with a months credit), so I don't even have to pay for until end of January. If this sounds okay let me know, this will be for a 2-3 day service, plus any extra for customs formalities in the Philippines, and I will even knock up some customs documents for it. Reuel will only need to pay any Customs Dues at his end. (I can even get those billed back to me if we feel up to paying it between us). Let me know. Steve
18. Excellent - Top work chaps. Let me know if you need a rate from UPS, I will happily arrange it. Steve
19. In case it is needed. I get a pretty good discount from UPS. If someone lets me know the weight/size of the box I will sort out a rate for it.
20.
I'd go for the Grovesnor again - awesome venue and a steal. I'll bring the Mark Bass, Line 6 Floor POD, I'll also have a word with the Girlfriend and possiblly bring her Dad's Orange, Mesa Boogie or Trace Elliot (god I love that girl!!!) Feb is good. So long as it's not cold Still very much alive, working flat out trying to learn 8 bloody songs for Dec 20th before I die on my arse! John
So there you are - wondered where you'd got to. Eight songs in three weeks - piece of p*** to man of your talents.
21.
Hmmm....back to the beginning for me then.
Get the Ed Friedland books, Constructing Walking Bass Lines and Constructing Rock Bass Lines. Both come with CD's so you can rip them to your Tascam, read the tuition and play to it. Worked wonders for me, and if yopu've got headphones you don't disturb anybody.
22. Nor am I, but who cares. It is good to see some mates, try some basses and shoor some breeze.
23. There is a thread somewhere about doing a bash a NAS's place in Worcestershire, probably May-ish, so it would be nice if as many as possible can make that to help raise some money for Nick's charities (see the other thread). I will be up for a bash in Nottingham as well as the one in May. Anybody seen / heard from Moody recently??. Not seen him around for a while.
24. Hi Cb My daughter got back to me today - from Capetown. We are a family which travels much and communicates little. She will check and send me some details when she is back in Jersey, early November (she could at least have told me she was at the other side of the world ..... kids , who'd have them). Steve
25. Hi CB My daughter lives there, I will send the enquiry and see what she can tell us. Steve
