The feckin' price of coated strings lately!!!!
Xildxx - please keep quiet about those (the laws of supply and demand yknow!)
My lips are sealed mate -
Thread titles like this are like a red rag to some of us I have great respect for AJ, I have records with him on and he's as tasteful as it's possible to be. But this, for me, is just a average groove with some nasty sounding bass over it. There's no musical beauty that I recognise. Why are these guys participating in a 'Solo Bass Competition'? Are they the star act or something after the amateurs have had their competition?

CLEARTONE EMP -
I got mine from Jockomo81 today after seeing this thread last week. I used to use a geezer in the USA but he was a little flaky and also got his Roman Numerals wrong (told me he'd sold hundreds too ) Here are some pics, they look ace, really lovely! Easy to apply too.
Was ill over new year so only just got round to watching this, thought it was much much better than usual. The sound seems to be better too now they've moved to their new studio. Surprised at all the negativity on here really, what do you people actually want from a New Years show?
They want a duet with Marvin Gaye and Karen Carpenter, backed by God Speed You Black Emperor with James Jamerson on bass. It's the only thing that will satisfy them.

Wonderful, thanks for that, Prince is fabulous, but I don't listen to him much these days, I should listen to more.
I don't get this at all, seriously, who cares who paid for it, if it has flats, or if he uses a pick?! If someone has a bass which inspires them for whatever reason, whatever it costs (sound/looks/feel/whatever) then fair play to them IMO, and your implication that those using flats (and a *pick*, *gasp*!) should only use a cheap bass is insulting, particularly when directed at an established pro who has more justification for using high end equipment than most of us around here. Back on topic, the main reason to put flats on a nice bass is that nice basses are easier to play, have better resonance and pickups leading to better tone, feel, and inspiration to play better (regardless of string type IMO).
That's what he alludes to in your other post about changing ego over time. That's pretty much how they go. Yes. I saw him at Bush Hall a couple of years ago. Fantastic venue and fantastic gig. With a girl who could really sing too and he had some amazing players with him.
Ah you were there too! Top night that. Tony Beard on drums and David Sanctious on keys. Dorie Jackson is a lovely vocalist, she usually does the house concerts with him, just the two of them with Dunnery playing acoustic, their vocals are almost telepathic. Bush hall is a lovely venue and the people who run it are lovely too. Did you go the Frankenstein Monster gig at the Tabernacle a couple of months ago? -
http://en.m.wikipedi...Francis_Dunnery He formed It Bites in the 80s. The band had/has a close niche following. But you don't get famous wearing a black faded t-shirt playing 80s prog rock. There's a fair few arguments that go on in the It Bites forum concerning him.
He's worn all sorts of outfits, I like the pastel suit and long blonde hair he was wearing in his Robert Plant days. I bet there are plenty of arguments about him on the current 'It Bites' forum but I haven't bothered looking. I'm not keen on the current line up, they're ok though, but they are not It Bites. Dunnery is considered a bit of a weirdo by his ex bandmates, but he was the real personality of the band and his voice is gorgeous IMO, rock n roll and very emotional. I've met him a few times, he is an odd chap, been through a lot of sh*t with his past addictions, and I like him, although he has some very strong and contentious views on stuff, and I think he finally got his PhD in psychology too. He's a bit of an unsung national treasure in my opinion. -
Obviously? The reason he's using the Ric is.. Frank promised his mother before she died that he'd make an album with his older brother Baz. it's what she wanted. this never transpired before Baz died. so, the whole Frankenstein concept was to bring his brother back to life! and I suspect kinda honour his promise. The Ric was Baz's guitar and Frank is using it obviously for this project again to honour his brothers memory and I guess channel his brothers spirit.
Ah, there you go, I didn't know the Rick was Baz's, thanks -
seriously? i would have thought that somebody who doesnt really care (edit: 'these days' ) that they look like they have just got out of bed after three days asleep and thrown on an old black tshirt , and his credentials as a musician/guitarist, the last thing he would be doing would be playing a ric as a fashion item just my opinionion of course
He usually plays Cort, Tanglewood and Squier. His Tanglewood acoustic sounds really nice actually. -
30th anniversary? He died on December 4th 1993 - I remember it vividly because I got in from work & my flatmate had written "Zappa is dead" in green permanent marker across the front of my fridge.
Sorry, 20th! and it was the 4th. WTF is wrong with my maths and memory?!! -
I miss Frank.
So do I. It was the 30th anniversary of his death on the 3rd of this month, I never saw a mention anywhere. -
Interesting, thanks Steve. You've put a lot of effort into this, it's appreciated.
Agreed, for me it was Dad who completely captured the feel of the pachyderm in bed, which was the task set.
Yeah, I love Dad's. I don't vote on interpretation of the picture though, as to me the picture is purely inspiration, but I liked all the entries. Dad's got my vote as the piece was really lovely and I got a visceral reaction to it.
Got given a tub of GHS fast fret from Santa. Santa thinks I still play electric guitar. Anyone used this on a bass? Especially on a bass with flats? BTW Merry Christmas everyone!
It's fine on a bass. Not as much noticeable effect though.
Nigel if you have uneven frets the Capo accentuates any discrepancy in them How do I know ? I have spent years setting up and repairing guitars in guitar shops one qiuck fix is to add more relief but yes a incorrectly fitted capo can do same just giving a alternative view on possible problem
But that would be a fault with the guitar not the capo. To be fair, the OP is not detailed or clear enough to make a diagnosis. But I bow to your experience and knowledge mate.
