1.
Ok, here's my effort this month: http://soundcloud.com/skollob/ruckus WARNING: this song contains strong language (specifically one s*** and three mother******s). Not safe for work, at home with the family or in the car with grandma. With that disclaimer out of the way… this is my first punk/metal track in nearly 20 years. I'm used to working with fast and energetic genres like drum'n'bass, so it was sort of familiar in that respect but very different in others. I certainly had a bunch of fun making it. And for the record, if anybody else can think of word that rhymes with "ruckus", other than "suckers" and the word I ended up with, then you win my admiration and would make a formidable Scrabble opponent. PS: contains samples sourced under Creative Commons license from www.freesound.org
Wickid man! I like it!
  2. Don't get me wrong, I love music. I still get a massive hit from loads of music, I'm on a big MIA and Todd Rundgren tip at the moment and they are greatly inspiring me and giving me thrills. But I'm getting an even bigger hit from my own music at the moment, loving the experience of hearing it.
  3. Very often, I get much much more of a kick hearing my own recordings and those of my bands than I do other music. Not always, but much of the time. I think it comes from lack of confidence but also having good ears. If I or my bands do something good, I get a massive kick from it, I can listen over and over at high volume, analysing, enjoying, thinking 'what next', etc. Obviously, if I think it's sh*t then I get a downer. I think my biggest musical thrills are going to come from future recordings I will make. What about you?
  4.
I am moaning about the fact that I never get to play with Dave Liebman and Adam Nussbaum. That and the fact that I am an ungrateful little s***
5.
Old thread bump Can you still get Villex pick ups in the UK? Specifically jazz bass 4's
I emailed the guy twice last year, no response at all. I went with a John East J-Retro and promptly forgot Villex existed, like he has his potential customers
  6.
You are, of course, correct but that kind of compromise is occasionally a little wearing when there are no standout moments Having said all that, I am waiting for news today of a possible weekly session where I will be part of as rhythm section playing with visiting frontline players like John Etheridge, Jim Mullen, Don Weller, Alan Barnes etc etc. So maybe things will pick up there.
Blimey, this and your previous post lead me to wonder what on earth it is you are moaning about
  7. There is a simple answer to your troubles, Rob. Stop living in Felixtowe
  8.
Thanks silddx, appreciate your comments, makes me quite proud to get compliments about 'my ear', which is something I've always felt I had, but in doing something a little different that most people hear as 'noise' I've never been so sure!
Be assured mate, you are fully proper!
  9.
Seriously!? Blimey.
It's not. It's very well mixed. Great bass playing too, totally at ease with the material.
  10. I can't really fault that, and I don't expect anyone else could either.
  11.
This might be up my girlfriends dad's street, could be a potential xmas prezzy
Is that really what Shep wants to hear?
  12. Brilliant mate! Great tune, great performance, great vid! I really enjoyed it, and you should be very proud of it! I really admire the amount of time and effort you've put into your sounds, they are so well crafted and balanced. You've got a great ear. Love your drummer too, you have the perfect musical partnership. Good luck for your tour.
  13. Not really my thing mate, but I like the chords and arrangements of the songs I listened to, and the band sounds very good. Nice sedate funk bass playing too. It's all well played by a mature and well practiced sounding band. I think you can be very proud of these recordings krysh.
  14. It's a good track. However, I think it is a bit polite, lacking punch, not enough power. I normally expect music like this to have a glossy rich American type of production as I think that's the primary market. If I hear music like this I want it to energise me, and I'm afraid this doesn't do that for me. I'd want the vocal recording to be more layered and posh sounding as they feel a little distant from the band. The kit and bass are a little lost, especially in the verses. The choruses are nicely produced, but again, I want to hear much more punch and a some 'loudness'. From an arrangement POV, I think you want a few little sweets in there, just to jive things up a bit and stop the verses from sounding too similar. It's good though, very good, just lacking production polish. Sorry if this sounds a bit too honest mate.
  15. Listened to the whole album earlier. It's f***ing good Mike, really! There's nothing like it I've heard before either. Her voice has totally grown on me. I'll buy it in a couple of weeks when my company finally rectify last month's salary f*** up. Some of the fast endings are wicked, the drummer is damn good isn't she, and there's some great bass work on there mate, and some great bass sounds too. I don't know if this is jazz, new age jazz, avant garde jazz or what, but it is a highly credible album, and Paula Rae gives just makes it happen for me. Superb Mike! Congratulations!
  16. Ahh, Mike, sorry man, I listened to a couple of tracks last week but since then everytime I had the opportunity to listen I forgot, and remembered when I didn't. What I heard sounds great, her voice actually takes a little getting used to, it's so personal that it's uncomfortable for a short while, and that's a great thing! The music is a great accompaniment to her voice, it works very well indeed. I will listen to the rest shortly. Cheers Nx
  17.
It would be nice to stick with something for oh I dunno 5 years before wanting to change, Buying and selling can get really stressy and I am a bit tired of it!
Try crack, it's cheaper and much more fun. But be careful, don't overdo it.
  18. Congratulations Dandelion! Have fun!
  19.
Perhaps I have the wrong attitude, although I did think I understood the world of musicians. We have a band who need a dep, they are not your normal 4 rock/pop band, there are 8 musicians playing. The songs are not a great challenge to a experienced Bass Guitarist, but the band wants to (as we all do) put on a great show. So to be safe they want any deps to do 4 rehearsals, money is not great but when is it ever. What is the problem ? Some of you seem to think if they are only offering £50 it's an insult ? You are worth far more than that. Come on, get over yourselves, it's a gig, not very often you get to play with a group of 8. They NEED a bass player. How many of you who think this is beneath you play in this band, and have you done ANY gigs in the last few months, for any money ?? Get out and play, I have never worried about how much I'm getting paid, I like playing music far to mush to worry about that.
Your last sentence is the key point. I play for nothing very often because I love the music, being paid is not really a consideration for me. However, one does not play normally play in a covers band for purely recreational purposes, it is usually a money earning concern, and to earn decent money you need to be GOOD. For a one off dep cover gig with four rehearsals for two sets and £50 in your pocket, I'm afraid you have to consider the fact that 4 rehearsals may very well be necessary for a band at that level of competence. You'd have to REALLY enjoy playing covers to do this gig I think. If you factor the time, cost and effort for this gig, it probably works out at about £1 per hour. That's fine if you're happy with that, I doubt there are many competent deps who would be.
  20.
Full lineup of Oxjam Chiswick. Kit Richardson, as per Nigel's post, are on at 5:10 at the Old Pack Horse. http://www.oxjamchis...dex.php/line-up. I know, or have heard the names of, a few other bands on the bill in all venues. Looks like it's going to be a good day of music
Yeah, we are really looking forward to it! We are going to play a version of Walking on the Moon especially for it, just for fun

    Oxjam 2012

Cool mate. Playing with Kit Richardson's Travelling Circus on Saturday 20th in Chiswick http://basschat.co.uk/topic/186108-kit-richardson-oxjam-chiswick-london-saturday-oct-20/
  22.
Another good one for Dick Venom & The Terrortones. Weirdsville at The Fiddler's Elbow in Camden. Headliners THe Jackets had to pull out of the gig due to their drummer being refused entry into the UK, which meant that it was just us and The Felines. However that allowed us to go on a bit later when the pub had filled up. A couple of the songs didn't go quite as planned, but nothing too noticeable and got a good reaction from the crowd. Mr Venom was all over the venue as usual although that did result in some mic lead problems later in the the set. I think we'll need to be looking into wireless adaptors for his mic. Sold plenty of CDs and other merch and met Basschat's Billy Apple. Wierdsville video'd the gig... Stayed to watch the Felines who were excellent, although disappointed that Jackets were unable to play. Got home at 3.30. Tired but happy.
That's wickid Mike! Great band, and the leather pants look ace
  23.
The one thing that does not change is my want to cut through the mix like a knife.
Rob, if you can't do this with the equipment you've already had, then I don't think the problem is with the equipment. Also, you talk of 'the mix' like it's immutable. It isn't. 'Cutting through the mix' is a much overused and meaningless phrase. You can do that by adding volume. You don't say whether this is your live or recorded mix, but I imagine you mean in rehearsal and on stage. If you want to be audible, there has to be a frequency range available in 'the mix' that is not as heavily occupied as others, and where your bass frequencies can sit. You say you can't rely on guitarists. They are possibly inexperienced and don't know how to EQ for a balanced live band sound, they may have EQed on their own at home and don't understand the concept that their amazing soloed tones are not suitable in a band setting. IME amateur guitarists can be guilty of adding far too much low mid, especially in overdrive tones. Then you have drums and keys to deal with. All this can render most of your bass playing near inaudible. Let me tell you, maple/maple, maple/mahogany, ebony/maple, maple/alder, maple/rosewood/bubinga, hi-mass bridge, bent tin bridge, Wizard pups, bolt on, neck through, and all that sh*t is not going to help you in the slightest. It's the band you need to sort out. You know what I think your real problem is? Your shyness. Playing with the people you do currently, you need to have the confidence to approach them and suggest they give your bass some room. If you can't do that, or if they won't accede to your request, then yet another bass is a waste of cost time and effort. Spend your money on a short course that teaches you assertiveness and diplomacy instead. EDIT: I have just read you are not in a band. So whose 'mix' are you trying to 'cut through' ?
  24.
Just a rehearsal. I want to leave it in a corner and let it run. There are so many options of wave and mp3 and file sizes kilobytes etc.
The H2 is fine then. Set it for the quality and record level you need, let it run. I had one, it was superb, great for recording gigs too. We use our iPhones these days though so I sold it to chris b.
  25.
I am looking for a long term relationship basswise. But I am not sure if I could handle it! I want to change! I think going custom might make me settle down, by going. "You picked the parts, the wood, the shape that you wanted exactly, now you best like it, even if you don't because it's best your gonna get!". In the past, the more I have spent modifying a bass, the longer I keep it. (Though the Gibson RD is the exception to the rule)
Don't make this mistake. This is quite the opposite of what you should do. It's YOU causing the situation NOT basses. Custom will just make the heartache more painful. I have my ONE bass, but that didn't stop me thinking about swapping it for the Kubicki Factor for sale on BC last night on a whim, and I have never even played a Kubicki.
