1.
I've got the LPB! I think the neck may be unbound on this, and it's finished in Nitro, not poly...again, i think... I'm going to put both the covers on this one, may also get a shell pickguard on it too, just to change it up a bit.
IMO thats going to look bloody sexy. I love LPB....beats CAR anyday Covers will look awesome. Pics up when it gets to you
2. I still think ceramic works best for rock....that's after testing some high end neo gear. Aguilar DB 12s all the way.
3. Chris is a pleasure to deal with. Smooth and easy transaction. A pleasant gent to meet! Enjoy the cab! Gareth
4.
Seconded Gareth - I couldn't quite get to grips with that extra string but the P5 is a beautiful thing and an identikit of the P4 (also my old one, oops) in your avatar
Ah...alas, I think Im after a Jazz type bass for my 5 string. But...Im going to think about it. Plus the Lakkie was a new one and thus on the ccard (new fangled 12 months interest free) at the moment my gear cash is tied....that is unless I sell my Precision which is identical to that one but a 4!
5. Ive been testing and buying/selling a hell of a lot recently. I am convinced I have my perfect amps. I am also now very sure that pure hifi completely modern amps are not for me....eg the Genz sound. I like warmth, vintage tone, some nice sweet high end, and overall I like it whether thats clean or dirty, depending on what band Im playing in! I am also not that bothered about lightweight neo cabinets or sonically pure cabinets. I have tried a few neo cabinets....even the really high end gear, and its great. The weight is great, and yes they are very much the same as ceramic. BUT....its still not 100% there for me. I cannot get the MASSIVE ceramic thump. Size of cabinet is much more important. I cannot really say at any point I need 5 mid sized cabinets, and this has led me to sell my beloved Berg HS410. What a fantastic piece of kit...but it was the cab I knew would sell well. One day I might go Berg again...when I have more space. Its a very small compact 4x10...but seen as though I have 4 other mid sized cabs....it wasnt getting the use it should (Enjoy it Jigster!) So...as much as I am really not sure how it has happened, I am going for ceramic 2x10s. These are the RS210s by TC Electronics. Yes, they are not probably as well made overall as Berg...but for their size, they pack a HUGE punch. I was actually shocked how good they sounded. And yep, they are ceramic. I dont know why they work for me, but they do. So im going to put some on order (x2), not bother with an RS212 as its again another 2x12 which I already have, and test out these vertical 2x10s. One of them is going to be great for smaller practices and home use. 2 is brilliant! I am awaiting the new finish, (black in colour, and stronger) and I will report back. Could be a few months as the new finish isnt on the 2x10s as yet. My advice...test test test and find what you like. I never though i'd get a full TC rig....but I like the sound it produces, and the sheer slimness is great when I dont want to cart the Orange about, or the Aguilar cabs. Happy New Year....let the 2010 GAS start!
6.
I had a Duck Dunn and it was a lovely bass. Very very well made and a wonderful tone. However, it really does depend on what Fender you compare it with and how they both play to you. What I mean is, I had a Lakland Darryl Jones jazz bass. A wonderful instrument, amazing quality that only Fender could ever dream of producing. The hardware was solid, the neck was smooth and the finish was second to none. A top class instrument of the highest degree. However, I did not like it to play. It felt very stiff and rigid and made my fretting hand ache. I replaced it with a MIA Fender Jazz 75 re-issue. In comparison to the Lakland, its rough around the edges, not very well put together, clumsy looking with cheap hardware and looks as pretty as a brick sh*tt*r. However, its a dream to play and I feel totally at one when I play it. Its the easiest bass in the world to play and the most natural bass I have ever played. I really do not have to think when I play it, I am moulded to it. I would not swap it for anything. So, yes Laklands are very good instruments but just be careful on what Fender its going to replace as it may feel very different. If I was going to buy a Precision, then I would probably get a Fender. Not for looks or build quality but purely on how they feel to play. This is off course if its going to be a main playing bass. If for something different then a Lakland would be a top bass to buy.
Thanks Linus. Ive had a think...and I am pretty sure as pretty as a Lakland is...for a P bass I need to stick to Fender...and If I want to improve the 08/09 I have....I need to go vintage or the 62 Reissue. Both my Ps are sooo lightweight in actual weight but MASSIVE in tone. I really like my old MIJ thats been sold around here recently, but the new USA's just sound massive...and the fretboards are really nice. Add the decent new bridge, nice colours, etc, I may as well stick to what Ive got. One thing I noticed with the DJ...and this is from the 5 string perspective so slightly different, but the neck was fabulous....nicest 5 string neck Ive ever played. I would definitely like a 75 Reissue Jazz at some point. Stunning growl! Lets face it, Fender may not have all the bells n whistles and wont have so much QC, but the tone and feel on their instruments is great. GAS over...hahah. Ill probably keep the P and just get a 5 string Lakland and be done. For now!
7.
If it was Oly white with the matching headstock I'd be in there....
+1 At this price...what extra do you get? May as well get a 75 reissue with blocks. Nice bass though still...thanks for the link.
8. I think it would be pretty awesome to possibly have a live band or two....one thats very 'muso' and another that is more rock n roll. Less slap as well please....I quite enjoy listening to slap....but fingerstyle/pick is much less abrasive over a few hours
9.
Very easy transaction - met at a convenient half way point and the cab is impeccable - really cared for gear- by with confidence on any future sales. Cheers Gareth
Thanks, enjoy the cabinet!
10. There is a car park near my place that's really cheap on weekends....and secure. Tube is right nearby...but there are obviously lots of other options. It's SE but nice n quiet. I might be able to help out with storing etc if there are issues with security if people stay overnight....I wouldn't sit and play it, honest!
11. Great review. I've been thinking of getting two RS210s instead of an RS210 + 212. Anyone compared the two cabs?
12. I think Clarky n Nigel will be up for it...it'll probably take a while to sort out but no time like the present to start!
13. Might have to check this out...
14. Count me in, I move to London in about 10 days. I'm happy to help.
15. Good luck with getting it sorted. Did it come sealed up when you bought it?
16.
cheers. I realised it was a pointless question after I posted it. do you know if there are any published factory specs?
Ive not adjusted the neck or string height on my Stingrays once since buying from new...and the Natural one is about 9 years old now. They are very easy to play....smooth, and great for getting quick with fingerstyle. Action is nice n low.
17.
Thanks for the advice! Ill defo go out and get my grubby mitts onto a TC RH450 to test. It's a little harder for the MB, as the nearest dealer to me is about 70 miles away! Best amp Ive ever used was a Boogie M-Pulse 600. Too big tho! Id go for a walkabout if there was a 2nd hand one came around, but Im not holding out hope!
Yep the Walkabout is about as tubey as you will get at that awesome size. Shame they are quite rare.
18. I had the 130(?) version of this....and it was awesome. Bargain.
19. Will take offers on this btw. In the Sheffield area tomorrow.
20. This is a stunning bass. What is the overall condition like? To me it looks great
21. I know Dave Bass has already helped me with this one, but has anyone had any experience with these two Lakland Precision-esque basses? I am quite tempted to try one out. I have two Fender P's....might sell one and try the Lakland...but I dont want to lose anything that the Fender's give me. The DD in CAR is stunning...probably just New Year gas....but we shall see.
22. Pretty picture added....drool! Looks just as nice with the tort guard as well.
23.
I have a similar problem... I gave myself a hernia on two seperate occasions owing to an Ampeg 410 HE and too many stairs to my flat! -Needless to say it had to go! I've replaced the cab with two markbass travelers -a 1x15 and a 2x10 that I run with an Ampeg B2R head. I find the sound really rounded and punchy. It is definately a different sound to the Ampeg 410, but no worse for it! The Traveler 102P is the lightest 210 on the go and the 151P not far behind in terms of weight -would def recommed you at have a look at them for the weight! I'm currently wanting to get rid of my head too as its in a 4u case with rack gear - too heavy! My Mate has an Aguilar AG500 that I was very impressed with, but find that it lacked something? -It was a good sound, but I like the low growl that an Ampeg dishes out. Thus Ive been keen on a tube pre at least... Ive been considering: David Eden WT 550 Mark Bass Little Mark Tube Genz Benz 3.0 I would like to try a TC Elec 450, but Im a bit dubious about the all digital thing... It would be interesting to see what you end up with as Im in a similar boat! If anyone has tried any of the above, whats your thoughts?
Tube pre amps to me, with the ones I tested, do very little to warm up the sound....I found I didnt really need it as it wasnt helping. Some amps get it spot on though....but they are more than likely the expensive options. Never tried the Eden (although I must admit I like their design and ill give a heads up to a seller in the for sale forum), but I have tried the MB LM Tube and Genz Shuttle 6/9. The MB LM Tube has some extra great features, but the tube does nothing. It obviously does, but I couldnt hear any difference with that or the LM3. My advice, if you have MB cabs, it might be nice to do the typical LM3 + a good tube emulator pedal like a Tech 21 VT Bass or Tech 21 Sansamp BDDI. That will give you everything, with the massive low end heft MB can deliver. It'll get close to a nice big Ampeg tubey tone. The Genz, in my experience, was too thin for playing rock. I tweaked, but I just didnt like it. Each to their own though. I also did not enjoy the tube pre in this amp. Very very quick , clean etc etc. I didnt believe the TC RH450 could sound as good as the reviewers were saying, but it does. Once I heard one, and I tried it for myself with a few dfferent basses, I loved it. Seriously good and pretty damn tubey for a digital amp....you would never believe it was digital. Plus, Im quite picky with dirt/tube overdrive and the tubetone on that amp is fantastic! Go out and test
24.
'I've been waiting 5 weeks now for delivery from Exeter's Mansons of one of these amps - I should have gone second hand for a quicker delivery. What amp are you replacing this with?
Cancel and save yourself some money and time!
