1.
Hi, I could do with some advice on what sort of valve rig to buy. I live in Guernsey so no shops to check stuff out in, plus I need to try it at a practice to know what it really sounds like. I mostly play classic rock. I use a Stingray. My budget is around the £2000 mark. I've been leaning towards the Orange AD200 with the 4x10 and 1x15 from what I've read so far. Any help appreciated, thanks.
Orange, or Matamp. I personally love the Orange. I chose Orange over Ampeg SVT CL and VR due to a good hour test where the Orange won me over. Plus, it can do 8 ohms, doesn't weigh as much as the Ampegs, looks awesome and the tube grind is purely awese even at low levels if you want it.
 2.
does the SR5 have that same nasal quality of the 4?
I think you might like the h s like me, you have the option of the more old school single coils as well as the big fat h tone.
 3. What tone are you aiming for? IMO, out of those amps, the LM3 is the winner. Best solid build quality, solid low end, sweet highs, Second I'd choose the LMTube, but the Tube doesn't add that much. The GK is apparently very nice, but it is a bright amp. Markbass wins hands down on build quality.
 4.
I've owned a couple of Lakky Skylines (a BG and a DJ5). Both were nicely put together basses, the DJ5 particularly so but I wouldn't have rated the fit finish as good as MM or for that matter better than current US Fender. Both were heavy and I've noticed significant variability in this respect on Skylines (once found a DJ4 with a very nice tone that can't have been more than 8lbs - I should have bought that one) - far more so than MM or Fender. At the end of the day only the buyer can decide at what point a supplier prices themselves out of the market, but for my 2p I would not pay more for a DJ4/JO4 than I would for a US Jazz. Also, out of all the afforementioned, a US Ray or Sterling is the only ones I would happily buy 'blind'.
My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't pay £1300 for a non US instrument that's not 100% amazing! Again, I agree. I've bought Stingrays blind in the past and I always will to get my spec. They don't mess about with them!
 5.
Hey have a bump!!! Let me know when you wanna sell that orange gear of yours!! lol Nice bass by the way!
Cheers Jim. Dave - sorry I totally forgot to measure the action! Little bump.
 6. If I was in London i'd be there like a shot! Unfortunately Newcastle is the opposite end
 7. A quick update on this one. I am about to order a Ray 5, although not from GuitarGuitar. I was passing and I have a TC Electronic Nova Repeater on order with them, and I went in to ask again where it was. I've been waiting for a month and I've been fully charged! They had a Ray 5 in, and some 2009/10 plek'd Laklands. They seemed very wary of why I wanted a Stingray over a Lakland. They told me to have a try, which I thought may as well. Now Lakland 5 necks are awesome...I have no doubt about that. I tried a JO5 and a 55-02. The JO5 was the heaviest bass I've ever picked up. We must be talking 12-14lbs...seriously. The JO5 I tried had QC issues all over it. I was seriously shocked. I have yet to find a new Lakland without any issues, although it may be just my bad luck. 5 months back I looked into the DJ5, and I couldn't get hold if a good one, yet everyone I asked didn't have the problems I was having. The 55-02 sounded great but the Humbucker wasn't Ray enough! Bit lighter though. The Stingray 5 also played like a dream. Smooth tight b, easy string spacing, nice contours, classic Ray tone. It was much more expensive than other stores though. I realise Rays are more expensive than some Laklands, but the build quality was higher, and you get a proper EB case etc. I'm glad I had a quick go, just to make me realise a Ray 5 is right for me. If you ask me, gg obtaining the lakland distribution is not a good thing. Why? Well, my friend enquirer about a 4 string and they wouldn't make a deal with a hardcase. Apparently their prices were seriously low. Not to those who know pricing though... Also, their comment on weight was 'the quality of wood is very high; it's a necessary evil'. Not true. My friend also asked about ordering a bass in with a different board. They kept putting it off, not responding, and finally said it was special order, non refundable, and normally Lakland don't do this. They were really trying to sell him the stock basses. My thoughts? A bass specialist would be better for Lakland.
 8. Ocean Colour Scene - Riverboat song. Not so difficult, but constant playing of the main riff makes my wrist ache like mad...and thats with correct hand positioning. Ive only played it 8-10 times though with this new band, so time to progress.
 9.
the orange amps in the 80s were very very different to the ones nowadays. I love valves i've never been able to nail a good tone out of most SS amps i've tried.
Oh I agree, but for the prices/weight/ohm capability/style the Orange won me over in an a/b against an SVT CL and VR. The Ampeg 8x10 was also poor at low volumes whereas the Orange cabs were spot on. Plug in, play. Obviously they were all modern versions though.
 10. I love the feel of a pick...it just works! But, about a year ago I got annoyed with being ultra fast with a pick, and rubbish with fingers. Fast forward to now, and my finger style is something I'm becoming proud of.
 11.
What did you use it with..?
Just one RS210 with a noisy drummer and guitarist. Very crisp, clear and plenty of lows. Really nice!
 12. Thanks Eude! Ill have a look BTW, a few people on here would gladly chat for a long time about how nice 2 x GS112s are...one is nice, but two....two is the sweet spot...same as the 2 x DB112.
 13.
so how much do you want for the Classic then? Its only got 4 strings so its pretty limited. lol. Ill start saving now shall i ;-) Going OT a bit im thinking of getting a JE Retro 2 band EQ for my Ray34 if i dont sell it before my holiday. I can see the benefits of both 2 and 3EQ now and having this will allow me to change back and forth when i feel bored. You say its got a low action, any chance you could measure that at the 12th fret. Im just curious as to what a low action means to you. Mines at 3mm on the E and G and i would like it lower but not sure i can do that without a bit more clank. good luck with the sale if it gets that far.
Im hoping after all the glowing reviews the Classic Ray 4 hits to spot and is a keeper for a lonnng time. As soon as they were announced I knew I had to have one. I was going to just sell the black ray and get a normal 2 band eq ray, but I figured I may as well get the Classic and have something different and special. Its instead of my initial idea of a custom bass....plus its a vintage white, birdseye maple, mutes, ec etc...mmm. I'll measure the action in a bit for you..its nearby
 14. Withdrawn. Used this properly yesterday and I am really liking it. I should learn to keep what I like!
 15.
Cor that's nice guv! (how much is the stool?)
Cheers. The woman would kill me if I even thought of selling it hahah. They arent that expensive though...and very comfy for practicing. Plus, looks cool.
Another one bites the dust. Ill hold out for your Classic lol Another good shot Gareth but you need to up the ISO or use a tripod. Its a bit blurry :-)
I know....I really doubt ill end up selling this now Ive re-thought about it this morning. Its a beauty and is a very nice low weight. I agree, its blurry...I need to learn how to use her camera properly hahah. I should probably start just gigging it more and use the Classic for recording etc etc. I always wanted a 2 band and 3 band eq...so i should probably keep it. Ill leave it up for a few days then withdraw no doubt.
 16. I like the departure...its very 'different' and although Ive never played one, its kinda cool! Get hammering those classic Metallica riffs.
 17. The GS do have a little dip in the mids, but there are a huge amount of players who use the 2 x GS112 setup. There is a chap on here who went the AE112 route then went back to his original rig of GS112 x 2. It all depends what you are looking for I guess There is no way any of us can say what is right until you have heard them. One players 'awesome' is another players 'sterile' etc etc. I have tested the AEs and they did sound nice, but there is a mid aggressiveness to them....now some people LOVE that, but then again if you think about it, mid hump or mid scoop, its all down to your ears. The F1 is a bloody good amp....I cant imagine many cabs sound bad with it. There is one point to mention, if you have a high end bass or a bass you really like the tone of, the markbass amps will sound good anyway, pretty much no matter what cabs you go for if you are spending a fair decent whack.
 18. NOW SOLD Cannot believe I'm even thinking of selling this! This bass has only ever been owned or played by me. 10/10 condition, fitted with medium gauge elites with plenty of life left in them. Weight is LOW....I do not have scales but compared to a Fender (all three of them I have here) its lighter. Im guessing no more than 8.5lbs. No marks or signs of use. No fretwear, perfect maple board. Guaranteed! Chrome is nice and sparkly, even the neck plate is unmarked. IF im being very picky, which I am, the square chrome plate on the underside for the jack plate could do with a buff up, purely because the air has taken away some of the shine. Its a very small area mind. The chrome itself is absolutely spot on. Again, I cannot stress how perfect the condition is. It looks exactly like a brand new one! There are no marks at all on this bass. As it's such a perfect condition, with the official Musicman hardcase (which AGAIN looks unused), £820 picked up or £850 posted with £750 worth of insurance and next day delivery. If you know of a better price for postage and/or want to book it yourself, please feel free and its just £820. Payment would be through bank transfer and sent the next day after the cash is received. I would communicate every step for you and make sure it is very well packed. My feedback thread is in my signature. The prices of these new are around the £1200 mark - http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~M...MN~ID~12961.asp PM me if you want to make an offer. This bass is in STUNNING/showroom condition...hence the higher price tag than normal 'second hand' Rays. It also has one of the nicest Natural finishes ive seen, and this finish costs more on the Rays. I'm based in the North East if you want to pick it up or indeed just test it. Currently has a fast low action Reason for sale? Possible Stingray 5 string order. If for any reason I can financially keep it and buy a Ray 5, ill withdraw. Cheers! SOLD
 19.
Not keen on changing cabs at all really to be honest as I like both of them!! Also not sure on the sense of having to carry to separate cabs to a gig if the idea of a lightweight head is to reduce the load of gear going out to each gig?
Ah, well I'd defintely stick with the GS112. Aguilar cabs tend to mix well with most amps. A lot of people use those cabs as they are a good price, still high end gear, and plenty of low end. If you are worried about mids the F500 gives you more control.
 20. Absolutely agree, especially with the Orange comment I love my small amps, but I'll just keep the orange stack anyway. Nothing sound like it. Luckily it can do 8 ohms and it's not as heavy as an SVT!
 21.
Guys, Had a good chat with Mark at Bass Direct today ref an F1 head and he really believes that a GS112 by itself will not work well with an F1 head. Apparently 2 x Bergantino 1x12's would work much better. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
TWO GS112s would be really really nice. One would be fine for quiter gigs. Depends on what you want to spend really.
 22. DR Sunbeams...are they nice and flexible? I dont like really tense strings. If they are pretty 'average' tension they might work for me.
 23. Youve kept that in awesome condition, it looks brilliant If I didnt have one Id be after this.... Whats your plan for the next amp? Buy with confidence from Jigster. Top chap.
 24.
I'm sure that HS (or HH) SR5s are even rarer than standard ones. I might give Electro a bell sometime this week just to see what they have in, then pop down if they have some of these options in but it's an hour's drive, so it'll only be worth it if they have something I actually have the option of getting (and I'll feel guilty anyway for trying out one of their basses, then buying 2nd hand). Just did a search in the FS section, no HH/HS SR5s as far as I can see.
Yeah, I had to go by youtube demos and reviews and then read into the design of the pickups. Ive gone through Warwick, Lakland, Fender, and tried some more exotic manufacturers as well. None of them have worked for me in a 5 string format. Lakland felt right, but I had three different basses all from new, and they all had poor QC. Thats just me being picky, but for £1000-£1200, I think we all should be. Ernie Ball Ray 5is the one 5 string bass I wanted when I was a wee young un, and now they have the HS, you get the classic Ray sound, plus lots of other options. There is a great demo of the sounds here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9Ef2CQZxXo...feature=related Personally, the Ray H sound is great, but the single coil at the bridge and then neck sound amazing. The Warwick $$ pickups to me are more wooly, less aggressive, and not as 'wow' as the Stingray H. Thats after testing them as well. Im 99% sure im ordering a Ray 5 HS. Purely as Im picky with colour and everyone seems to be selling the colours I dont like!
