1.
I have a limit (3), but what I don't get (not just you) is why lots of similar basses? How many stingrays/precisions does one man need? (ok apart from John Entwhistle...) If I had a limit of 6 there would be 6 random different basses there.
I tried other basses/manufacturers, and didnt like them as much as the core three. I vene tried uber high end stuff. I get your point though, Im crazy. All my Rays are different models though.
2. As long as you play the one you want, and it really does literally sing to you, then go for it! I personally had a limit of 6 basses. I wont play them all equally, but I want them! Ive now got a collection of 'my' favourite basses. As yet, the uber high end bass GAS hasnt really hit me, and I dont think it will for a long time. Personally Im happy with a brand new Ray and another new amp, and keep the change That's me though. Just dont sell anything youll regret. I admit as well, sometimes things are so hyped, im let down. Although this only applied to the Metros I played in GuitarGuitar.
3.
Surely the people in these 'very loud doom bands' are using a chuffing ENORMOUS PA to create the 'volume singularity'(tm)* fix they need? In which case huge stage volume is utter pants anyway.... * 'volume singularity'(tm) = A noise so immensely loud that you are unable to perceive anything else around you - it 'sucks in' all other sound
Yep, their onstage volume is immense. Most decent 2x12s are more than enough. I dont know how they deal with those insane volumes! A DOOM expert will be along shortly to describe how DOOM volumes operate (eg two 4x12s).
4. RH450 plus a 2x10 or 2x12. Outstanding amp, IMO. Just get separate cabinets.
5.
LH500 For the beer tokens its the beans. I have compared a Super12T pushed by an LH500 against a MBsa450 pushing a Berg ae410. Both VERY loud. Didnt have a dB meter and the object was not to see which was the out and out loudest rig, both crushed a loud drummer and guitarist though. If you need more volume you need to get involved in drag racing....
Agreed, most decent 2x12 should be more than ANYONE really needs. But some people need insane amounts of volume, low end, and punch, and that would require a really quality 4x10, or even 6x10. I use different 2x12s, and I agree, they are very loud. Even the TC RS212 is VERY loud, and at the old prices an absolute bargain. Its more, as I understand from other reviews, to do with 'pushing your cab to its limits' and the sound compressing. Pushing a 2x12 every gig at its limits is not ideal. A 2x12 will only do so much. If you play a 5 string bass in a very heavy doom band, I would want more than a 2x12. I dont, so im alright
6.
Or, in a distinctly rockier vein (and what attracted me to Alembics), try Metallica's Black Album, eg, Enter Sandman, Holier than Thou or My God of Misery. Quite an aggressive crunchy tone when played by Jason Newsted (or before him, Cliff Burton, who also used an Aria and a Rick)
I love Metallica, but what the hell is with the low volumes of bass on the albums?! It seems to have got worse, but AJFA was just plain daft!
7.
I think you need to have a read of the Barefaced website. They say that at higher volumes (plus 250watts) the Super Twelve will be louder than a 4x10. Obviously I havent heard it myself but quite a few people that own them say they are deafeningly loud. The RH450 was good but I was trying to make sure the beer fund was replenished before uni starts and I didnt need all that amp. I was looking at the LH500, many a good thing been said about them and they go for stupid money too. Thanks for the recommendations. AJ
Ive read the site, and yes some 2x12s ARE louder than 4x10s, but it depends what 4x10 If we are talking highend 2x12s VS highend 4x10s, the 4x10 will win. It will not have as compressed a sound when you dig in or slap at high volumes. If we are talking a highend 2x12 vs a cheaper 4x10, the 2x12 might be louder. There are tons of thread on Talkbass about this, with people who play a lot of gigs and are much older than myself. One chap who has both the Berg AE212 and AE410 said he reached the limit of his 2x12 at a gig, but it still sounded great, whereas the 4x10 would still have room and volume. If the RH450 was too much of an investment, I can see your point, and the LH500 is a good solid simple amp. Not amazing, but damn good for the money. Ive borrowed one on tour and its loud.
8. That amp head is SUPER loud. Seriously, Ive tried a lot. The TC amp is more like 600-700 'Markbass watts'. It will push and push. If you want something still vintage and ultra loud, you are probably in the right ball park with a LH500, but it will not be louder than the RH450. The very thing stopping you getting a lot of volume is speakers. Ive tried the RH450 into a 4x10 (8 ohm) a few times and it is very loud. If you want serious volume then you need a lot of speakers! That BF cab will be loud, but 2x12s can only do so much. If you need a lot more volume than a 2x12, you need a large high end 4x10 or 6x10.....even a 4x12. I play in a hardcore punk band btw, so I know what you mean by loud
9. I think it depends on the amp and the volume you want. If its a fairly big cabinet that can take the power (high end 4x10) then by all means if you dont need anymore speakers, get the 4ohm version. 4 ohm mid sized cabs sell better second hand it seems. Smaller cabinets? Always go for 8 ohm IMO (eg 2x10). Otherwise, you amp can hit it with a lot of power! I think its more the modern amps that work much more efficiently and sound 'bigger' into one 4 ohm cabinet than one 8 ohm cabinet, and Im talking 2x12-4x10 upwards. It depends on the amp. My TC RH450 is loud no matter what, and at 8 ohms works perfectly. Markbass amps, apparently, work much stronger at 4 ohms. Your ears wont be able to tell much difference between a 4 or 8 ohm cabinet in reality, but your amp might sound 'fuller' working at 4 ohms.
10.
They do seem to have a few issues. I'd get two p110c's and the head next time tbh. The buckle gave out on the bag too, about five seconds earlier it'd have gone half way up a flight of stairs too!!
Heck! I think for the moment ill steer clear. They look ideal, but no doubt id be unlucky and have to send it back.
11. To be fair, as much as a Bongo is an EBMM, it sounds very modern and 'new' to my ears in the demos....quite a big departure from a Ray. Youll still get that EBMM tone in it though...
12.
Ugh. Fivers are weird, I used to play sixes (status and ibanez) but just prefer four. The ibanez had to go back, I'll fill you in properly when it's safely back. Save to say it's still awesome and I will get one again. But the sound of this rig is great so far. Three gigs this weekend, an open mic house band slot for the midget, a loud indoor rock venue for the stack and an outdoor festival stage on Sat to compare so we'll soon have more details!
I was tempted to get the Promethean but there has been a few that have had problems. I expect it on new products, but Im not sure I should pull the trigger or not.
13. That PJ rig looks like absolutely amazing quality. That alone attracts me to it. I can only imagine is sounds immense
14. What happened to the Ibanez gear? Do you prefer the Markbass/BF rig?
15. Way cool to have a Dad that plays bass. My Dad always wanted to be a singer, or a drummer, (I think). It never happened. He was therefore massively helpful and supportive when I started on bass as a young un as he thought the bass was 'cool and mysterious' haha. Now he cant believe how much its taken over my life, and how much Ive spent, (in a good way though, at least I didnt waste it overpriced cars like my friends did and still do). Good luck with the sale.
16. Im still intrigued with the Bongo....very intrigued.
17. Quick update. Its been delivered this morning and my girlfriend was home luckily! She says the box looks absolutely fine. The only thing was the damp bubble wrap covering the shipping box, but no signs of anyone opening it or damage. Ill check it later. Lets hope all is well! At least the mystery is over! If its damaged in anyway or been tampered with, ill be in for another wait I guess.
18.
Surely the courier must have some sort of tracking system to work out where it was last? If it helps I once had a bass shipped to Spain & bounced all around Barcelona for about 10 days before finally turning up at the right place. When it did arrive it was in perfect condition
Thanks, thats what we are all hoping for at the moment! Im hoping, and I still have faith, that its just a mistake. The 2 Band got stuck last weekend due to Parcelforce having a technical problem at one of their depots. It was held up which meant I got it a week late as I can usually only get deliveries on Saturdays now. It was fully checked over by my dealer before it was shipped back out to me when PF finally decided to get it to them. It arrived here in perfect condition as was the box etc. So I do think these things can be a happy ending, its just the worrying Im doing now, and the potential problems of turning things down to due lack of 5 string again. I agree, they should be able to track it, but they seem to be taking their time. The Newcastle depot hasnt ever seen it, so its probably gone to the wrong place, or much worse, been stolen. I just hope the courier are going to sort this out NOW so I dont go mad with being in that 'unknown' state. The longer they take, the longer a potential re-order will take. More news when it happens! As you might have guessed, there arent many chances of anyone being in the house for the entire delivery slot, so that causes more problems.
19. Well, just as Ive been offered the Training Contract with a Law firm Ive worked towards for years and years (still VERY happy about this) but now Ive yet AGAIN had problems with couriers and basses. You can all see Ive got my Ray 5 HS on order. Its been on order for around 4 months. I didnt mind the wait so much, but you wont believe this. It arrived in the country last week, and been shipped to my dealer. The dealer sent this out on Special Saturday Delivery with my 2 EQ Ray, (along with other accessories). The 2 EQ Ray arrived safely. The Ray 5 HS has still not arrived, and the courier have no answers for my dealer as yet. This isnt a dealer issue, its a courier issue. Im seriously getting stressed out and quite worried about the whole thing. I really dont know what Im supposed to do. I needed a 5 string bass weeks ago, so another 3-4 month wait will be really hard work. Its the most Ive ever spent on a bass. Ive called my local depot and they have no idea where it is. It never arrived with them on Saturday. If it doesnt turn up tomorrow at one of the depots (eg if it went to the wrong area) I think its pretty clear its been stolen. What would you do? Obviously I dont have to do any type of claim as Ive not received it, or even seen it.
20. They look very pretty, and those pickups scream 'dont mess with me!'
21. I think there has been some changes. Sandberg specs say now 35 inch is an option but only in rosewood.
22. Hi Thanks for the query. Only really looking for cash or trade for something a little rarer like a Ltd EBMM or older Fender (obviously plus cash from me). I forgot I still had this advert up! Bump.
23. Check the bass porn under my thread for a pic of one of my new Rays. The others are yet to arrive. VERY happy Ive got at least one 2 band. This thing looks and sounds sooooo good! Im glad I went with a normal ray and the Classic if im honest. This bass looks like a modern-classic anyway. Punchy and FAT!
24. Mine turned up. Its a beauty! Pics in the Gear Porn bit.
25. I don't see any need to change the MM bridge.
