Fender 60th Anniversary Precision confirmed!
Musicman20 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
Hmmm, doesnt excite me that much. I bet its expensive! -

Not sure, but totally agree. The design is crazy, but works VERY well. I tested one for a good 2 days and loved it.

Spector Basses @ Gak...not impressed...
Musicman20 replied to Bassmurf's topic in General Discussion
I ordered from GAK and the bass arrived in the wrong gig bag as they couldnt find the original one. They were looking for it when they called, and said they would send it out. This isnt really GAK's fault, but the bass, a Lakland DJ5, was pretty awful. Poor binding, pickup guard badly cut, very heavy....etc. It went straight back. -
Had an email back from Darren @ The Bass Merchant, he's checked stock, they do have one, I've just ordered it and should be with me on wednesday...hell yeah! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, GAK!
Good move, Darren knows his Spectors and Warwicks very well so good choice! -
PS see my DB212 here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...t=0&start=0 Drool.

Keep the GS cabs and get a DB212 (4 Ohm). That would be a VERY nice setup of cabs, with lots of flexibility and actually gives you two different sounds. Plus, whats great about the DB212 is you can load everything on top, then roll it into the gig. You only need one cover as well. It might be a little heavy at 69lbs, but some cab makers charge a lot more for neo versions that are only a small amount lighter. Eg, some of the new neo cabs are about 60lbs. 9lbs isnt worth it IMO. If we were talking 20lbs, thats different. I agree with Legion, the covering can be a little fragile. Covers are a MUST on the DBs, and if you want the more durable tolex, go for black or white (although white is going to get VERY dirty) as that tolex is 'nubby' and a little thicker.

I chose the DB series purely because I tested a pair of DB112s at the Bass Merchant and loved the tone. GS - Huge bottom end, slightly mid shy (not in a bad sense) and ability to have more vintage or crisp highs. Nice handles and carpet covered. DB - Still a large bottom end, but more mid punchy so the mids seems to kick out, (the tone is....with a strange description, 'chewy' thick and warm) and nice sweet highs. I only have the tweeter on about 1/3, or off. Not sure how the high end compares to the GS. Strap handles and very pretty styling. Both of the ranges seem to just have lots of articulation. Personally, after testing a lot of high end cabs, Id put the Aguilar cabs up with the top manufacturers. Both are great. For me, I found I would always end up using two 12s, so I went for the DB212 as it has large handles, and removable casters built in. I still often think about picking up 1 DB112 for small gigs, but I know its just GAS speaking. They have the new SL112, VERY lightweight 112s. Check www.aguilaramp.com
I'm confident that a pair of DB12's would outperform a single DB2x12... sounds like GAS justification to me!
I think they are virtually the same, OR, you may see a little more omph from the DB212. This is something I looked into when I bought the ones Higgie now has, and my 4 ohm DB212. Yep, if we are talking one DB212 8 ohm, then maybe the DB112 x 2 will out perform it, BUT, I think if we are talking the single 4 ohm DB212, then because its a single large box, you get a huge sound. Something to do with total internal space actually being in one box, but that might just be talkbass nonsense. Either way, two DB212s is just amazing. I wish I could still have both but space became a premium.

Squier 60's CV And 70's VM's......Precisions!!
Musicman20 replied to spongebob's topic in Bass Guitars
I think Im going to pick up a CV P or J at some point as my ex-band want me back to play tours and possibly join as a full time member again. Gigging abroad means I need a nice sounding bass thats not expensive. -
Here it is! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS!
Basically I think Aguilar nail the aesthetics better than every amp/cab manufacturer going, (almost). That is one seriously nice looking bit of kit. Hopefully it sounds as good as it looks.

Cool, but prefer the DJ by far.

When I tested it, the front and rear pickup in active was a really nice snarly rock tone. The single S in the middle, passive, is just SO close to a P bass its unreal.
When are all those new EBMM's due? You wont know what to play first but something tells me the white one could become your favourite straight forward no messing Ray. I like simplicity in things and for long term value its always the standard models that become sort after rather than special versions.
I would have had the Big Al 5 SSS a few months back but S&T didnt realise they had a single H instead of a the SSS, so its on a priority list! Im guessing we are talking at least Feb...for most of them. You are right, ill stick with the single H, classic Ray style and order a white pickup cover as extra.

Cool full review of the Big Al 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYLuGH39jtw
I just think white with white pg, pup cover and headstock is going to be the coolest looking ray ever! I would wait MM20, how long would the wait be?
Ah, not long. Well, could be 3 months I guess but Im busy moving house for a month or so anyway, and I might be quitting my job and finding something new asap, so thats going to be a busy time anyway. The HH isnt in stock neither....just realised, so basically its 'should I get an extra H or stick with it oldschool'. To be fair, the Big Als and the other basses have tons of versatility, so maybe a single H is the way to go just to have a nice pick up n play/no messing bass. I think I was just thinking id have to wait anyway, so should I jhave the extra tonal options. The White headstock looks STUNNING....Ive seen what they do and its much better than what I imagined and a big leap from the Lakland/Fender matching headstocks.
-
Wow, lucky with the customs and the speed. Nice bass. Glad you like it. Any favourite settings yet?
-
Cheers chaps. Well, if I get single H you can have the white pup cover as well (just a few quid for the spare white one), but with the HH they dont allow pup cover changes as the pup covers are different. The HH looks decent, and a HS is probably redundant as I have the Ray 5 HS. So, at the moment im in two minds. Extra tone (not sure id use a neck H....never experienced it) or stick with classic H...(even though I have a 2 band H already....but they DO sound quite different).
-
Has anyone played a H vs a HH back to back? Can they comment on ther tone...eg can you still get the exact single H tone? My Ray is delayed and I may opt for a HH instead of H...so just looking for opinions. The disadvantages I can see are: It looks a little strange....at first Less room Cavity in the back covered by a plate Cheers
Two??!!
I like them that much im getting a 4SSS and 5SSS. The 4 is to replace a Fender Jazz, and the 5 is a 30th present (slightly early I think...depends on when it gets here).

More band work, more gigs. EBMM Bongo, Berg AE212, Genz Benz Streamliner 900 or Shuttle Max 9.0.
