1. Hmm, at that price, two RS210s by TC and you'll have good resale value.
2. I could hear differences through the YouTube videos on my iMac.
3. Me thinks it's the same one...
4. I forgot to mention the TC 212! Superb tone, size, weight, aesthetics, and actually very well priced!
5. Markbass now make a NY122..£700 ish. The Genz is a good one to try. If you aren't bothered about neo, try the Aguilar DB212!
6.
Enough mids?! *Hearty laugh* It's chunky mate! But the voicing definitely favours lower mids; my p bass sounds punchy as heck, whilst the stingray simply growls. Love it.
+1 I need a new photo of mine.
7.
How about two of these? I'm guessing they're 8ohm?
Bass Merchant usually have a full selection to try, which is what I did. The two RS212s will be MORE volume than most of us need. Fairly light, easy to move, punchy tone, and a nice smooth tweeter.
8. Oh heck everyone, I can sense a internet argument brewing somewhere. No need to get too involved you know, if you dont like it, state why, then thats cool, we can all accept that. I think the term 'fanboi' is a little difficult to digest. I think what I'd describe myself as is a player of EBMM instruments. This hasnt come around from the internet or forums, it has come from trying them out, and finding they work for me. I got my first real Stingray over 12 years ago, and Id wanted it for a few years before that! Why? The aesthetics, the different scratchplate, and more importantly, the tone. MASSIVE tone. That, and the fact my teacher at the time who stated that they make instruments that are very high quality without the 'custom' price tag. So yes, Ive followed them since then, way before I got involved with forums. Am I a fan of their instruments? Yes. Why? Well, I am, thats it. I say enjoy what you like, and dont get too bogged down.
9. I havent heard any but the idea seems excellent, but I think the majority like the separate amp/cab idea, and its probably been hard work trying to show people how different the IP system is. I imagine we will see a neo version, or none at all.
10. Love the Markbass stack/gear
11. We can all pick and point at it, but until its played....lets not worry about it. If we talk about new innovative designs that some are sceptical of, we could go on for a long time about a few eg: fanned frets, neo speakers, etc. I like to reserve judgement until Ive played one.
12.
Yeah looking at your set up you love the vintage sound, and the aguilars have a great abundance of it. Have you tried Barefaced or Schroeders? Mark P.S. trade you my 2 for your 212....!!!
Hi Mark Thanks for the offer, but the 212 with casters makes it easier for my load ins etc. Id still like a pair of DB112s but no space left. I did try the BF Compact and it wasnt my thing....and the Schroeder didnt seem to have the build quality. Obviously horses for courses, but Aguilar all the way! Good luck with the sale!
13.
Well, after reading up a bit last night on the rig I used, I was very surprised to read that the head is only rated at 200 watts. Given that I was running it into a single 8 ohm cab, that means I was only pushing less than half of the available power for the whole gig, and I was way loud enough. This revelation has floored me. Obviously a single 4x10 is going to move some air, but how can such a relatively low watt rating be so loud when compared to a solid state counterpart amp? Incredible. Overall, I was very impressed with the build quality of the Orange gear, and I'm very intrigued to explore it further. I mentioned earlier on about the Tiny Terror head. I now understand that this is a tube pre and solid state hybrid. If I am concerned about weight issues, would the TT offer the same kind of sound I experienced at the gig with the all tube head? Or is there some compromise at play here with such hybrid system? Also, the isobaric cabs seem very interesting. Someone mentioned efficiency issues with these. Why should I be concerned about this if they're designed to go with the TT head? So many questions hey?
I still dont know the full reasoning why a tube amp sounds 'louder' and seems to have more volume on tap, but Ive seen huge bands play very very large stages with the AD200b Mk3 and two cabinets. It seemed a lot of the bands I listen to are ex-Ampeg users and have switched to Orange due to the recent 'problems' with Ampeg. I think Ampeg are pulling themselves out of it, but in the UK, its a no brainer, as the Orange gear (well the high end of the catalogue) is hand made in the UK and comes with a 3 year warranty. I agree anyway, the 200 watts (or whatever the true rating) is incredibly loud. One thing to note, tube amps are their FULL wattage no matter what cabinet/ohmage. So at 8 ohms its 200W and at 4 ohms its 200W. When you start pushing that gain, it gets quite dirty, but in a very pleasing way...and it seems to get incredibly loud to the point where I have lots of volume left on tap. The amp you are thinking of is the Bass Terror, which is a hybrid 500 watt light weight amp. Very good price, very light, and can capture the vibe of the bigger AD200b quite well, but obviously it will never have that full girth or tube push. Its close though. Personally, if you dont want the bigger AD200b Mk3, try the Bass Terror 500 with a few cabinets. The Smart Power SP212 is one punchy little fella! Or, try it with the traditional Orange OBC115 or 410, or try another brand as well. Hope this helps. I had the same reaction when I played mine for the first time. Like 'woah.....this is it!'.
14. Nothing sounds like my Orange rig...nothing. I couldn't give two hoots about weight because I have the light option as well...which is lucky. Glad you enjoyed it.
15. This has won the Best At Show New Product at NAMM 2011. I really want to try it.
16. 3 EQ and 2 EQ is nice....dont worry about the subtle differences. 2EQ = Seems fatter and warmer to me. 3EQ = Same tone, control over the mids, little more modern and aggressive.
17. White body with rosewood board
18. Sterling - Ceramic pups, more aggressive modern middy sound but basically a MM tone, jazz type neck, very comfy neck heel and body shape. Stingray - Classic alnico pups, more fat smooth tone, P ish neck but very easy to play, larger body. Both VERY nice. Ray is classic, Sterling is for those who fancy something a little bit different.
19. Some responses are far too serious! Its a fun way way of playing with your tone. Sound men and the guy recording me will just have to deal with it! I'm pretty sure theyd spend more time sorting out different settings for the guitar effects. No one has played it, so we can't be overly negative. I personally trust they've done a good job like the Bongo and Big Al.
20. The shop should sell the older finish cheaper no doubt.
21.
Personally i couldn't deal with so many possibilities! the 3 pickup Big Al has more than enough options for me
Its a tone machine isnt it! The new Ed Friedland 5 string reviews shows off some of the cool possibilities.
22.
Mr Pot meet Mr Kettle, you iz both black!
Lol, I realise I went through a lot of different options, and I still look at other amps and cabs. Now, I wont buy anything unless it seriously impresses me and adds something extra. Ive found my current amps/cabs are perfect. Too many? Yes, but thats it....until TC upgrade the RH450. RH450 + cabs - awesome, going nowhere. Orange is going nowhere, and the Aguilar cab is my favourite cab of all time. LM3 - Great, and again, going nowhere. Other cab GAS needs controlling, as I will probably barely notice the difference.
23.
It would be a fairly silly business model for them if they were trying to encourage a P/J for everything (since they don't make one). That said, instruments are tools for making music and companies should make the tools that best help the artists produce their art. If the artists are crying out for 250,000 pickup wiring combinations, then an instrument maker better bring that to market (as EBMM have done). However, if the ones making the music feel that a simple P or J is the best tool for the job, why move from that mindset? That's my take on the Gamechanger, its clearly not for me because i've always felt that minutia difference in tone between pickup wiring configurations didn't add to the music I wanted to make. Some musicians probably think it will. That's why its good to have options (albeit calling it a "gamechanger" is a bit naff). Lets revisit this in a year and see how much the game has changed.
Dont get me wrong, I think they are well aware there is some players who will never need it. Hey, do any of us? Not really, but its a different flavour for a player to try. Im happy with the current sounds I have, so no idea if id ever go for one....but I like the idea. If I try one and it works for me, heck, ill go for it. Rather than than buy yet another expensive Jazz copy.
24.
Musicman20, make sure you have a look in Sounds Live on Dean Street if you get a chance. They've got an amazing Stingray in the window. It's very pricey at £1499 (reduced from £1699!) but it is incredible. Cream body, tortoiseshell scratchplate, figured neck and a maple fretboard, it looks fantastic. I've not played it, but it definitely caught my eye when I was passing today.
Just found this, thanks. I tried a Classic and there was a weird neck heel 'jump' which seems to not be on the newer versions. They are nice but Ive got the 2 band single H sorted now. Just STILL need to decide if going HH with the 3 EQ Ray.
25. Early reports from NAMM threads seem to point towards an 'SVT type' tone from this amp. I quite like that tone, but in no way need it as Ive got that covered. Obviously NAMM isnt the best place to give full tonal reports, so we shall see how things go.
