1. I would have to say Fender basses and Ampeg amps. Don't get me wrong, they're good, but somehow they seem to attract a rating which would make someone think that other brands don't exist.
2.
It has to be Ear Protection .. ok.. so it's not specifically 'bass' kit.. but how many people spend hundreds maybe thousands of pounds on bass gear yet *still* insist on spending as little as possible on looking after their ears? (Or not spending anything at all on them!)
+1 (that's a big plus one )
3. Signed. This seems to come up quite regularly (i'm pretty sure I signed a similar petition or two on the 10 Downing Street site last year). Is there anyway this can be sorted out permanently?
4. I'm not keen on having a separate 'beginner' section, because I'd like beginners to be included with the rest of us (I've been a beginner for at least 10 years now ). How about a self-rating system like you have on Musofinder.co.uk? You can rate your own playing from 'beginner' to 'pro'. I suppose if you really feel the need, you can set up a filter per-individual which doesn't show any posts from beginners - would be a feature to be used by those who don't like the same basic questions being asked repeatedly? (not me btw).
5. I'm quite taken by singlecuts at the moment, but I don't like them when the top 'bulges' before it connects with the neck. Your designs look very Sei-inspired to me. I voted B, but there looks to be a lot more surface area above the strings than below, does that make sense?!?
6. no difference. The real difference is made by the competence of the person playing either
7. Received a reply from Jon last night saying that the jumbo fretwire shouldn't create an issue for the intonation. Disaster averted
8. I've just popped Jon an email asking for his opinion on this. I'll wait to see what I get in reply...
9. Thanks for the heads-up Mikey. As far as I know there hasn't been any further progress on my bass (I think Jon was probably finishing what he could last month before starting on any new basses). I'll ask Jon whether it's worth re-addressing my request for jumbo fretwire - I only requested it because it's what I'm used to with my Warwick, it's not an essential.
10. I'll wait until she's been cleaned up before taking a look. No birthing shots for me please I'm quite looking forward to seeing how this bass turns out.
11. Still GASing for a small/light/loud amp. They seem to be releasing new ones all the time which doesn't help me choose one, but does save me from buying one
12. If you don't need the effects, then I also recommend going for the LowDown Studio 110. Though, I was using the CD/MP3 input jack with my Tascam yesterday and the speaker isn't really great for full range sound. I should think it's OK to play along to, but impossible to actually work out new basslines (I've got some posh Sennheiser headphones to do that!).
13. HammerHead Rhythm Station is free, easy to use, but sounds very electronic-dance http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/ Last week I installed Hydrogen drum machine under Linux and it is very good indeed. The only Windows version on the site is an early development release from back in 2006, which seems to have a lot of bugs http://www.hydrogen-music.org/
14. I visited the Vestax link and as soon as they mentioned 'DJ' my perception of Watts turned from RMS to PMPO. I could be over cynical though
15. To be able to practice late into the evening without annoying the family or neighbours I use a Tascam Bass Trainer with headphones. Great for playing along to CDs and small enough to fit in your bass carry-bag. I have the volume set at about 3/10 and I can hear everything fine, so it'll put you at risk of Tinnitus if you really want that kind of thing. The latest version, the Tascam BT-2, is within your budget but I would recommend a very good pair of headphones to compliment.
16. Basses: -1 (0 in, 1 out) Guitars: 0 (+1 in, +1 out) Amps: 0 (0 in, 0 out) Cabs: 0 (1 in, 1 out) FX & misc: 0 (0 in, 0 out) In detail: IN Ibanez Electric Guitar (2nd hand, leaving present from previous employer) Bill Fitzmaurice Omni 10 (cab built over the summer with father) OUT Ibanez SR900 sold when I moved and left my covers band ELK 2x10" custom, also sold during the house move --- Not a very eventful year from a bass perspective. Though personally, it has involved a substantial house move (Norfolk to Essex), new job, and birth of first child. I've got a very special and expensive custom Shuker due in 2009 to make up for it though
17. Cubase LE came with the Zoom H4 I bought ages ago. I haven't really used it in anger, but when I have played around with it, it certainly recorded in more than 15 second segments. I can therefore say that this is not a 'feature' of the Cubase LE software, which is a cut-down version of Cubase which hardware vendors bundle with their soundcards to get you hooked on Cubase. Recommendations: Reinstall Cubase LE. Visit the Steinberg site and make sure that you've got the latest patches for your version of Cubase LE. Check any 'latency' settings you have with the Emu soundcard - it could be that the card can't keep up and therefore dropping the recording.
18. I lurked on TalkBass before I found what was then BassWorld.co.uk. I've never registered an account on TalkBass though, I get all the bass-related interest I need from this fair forum without the culture shock
19. That certainly is eye candy. Good call on the colour, you won't miss that bass on stage! Will definitely have to hook up at some point this year to talk bass
20. Wow! I read the thread on this on Talk Bass just this week (I very occasionally lurk there, not signed up). This is an awesome bass. I've got Jon Shuker making me a fanned-fret 6 string singlecut with not too dissimilar scale lengths to what you've got there. The fanning looks far superior to the 'extreme' stuff you get on Dingwalls. Awesome bass.
21. That looks gorgeous Merton. I love how the fanned fretting is just so subtle. I find that the Dingwall-style fanning is just too extreme and starts to look ugly. I'm hoping to get a similar effect with my custom bass. Great to see more progress shots, keep them coming
22. My rig has a top end which would threaten to take your face off and therefore shows up any sloppy playing. I like the think that this is the reason that I spend a lot of time making sure that my playing is as exact and articulate as possible.

Muse Bass Sound

My old band used to cover TIRO and I used just a Big Muff pedal. Similar enough sound live for people to recognise the intro.
24. For practices I've used my Hartke HA3500 and Hartke Pro 2200 cab (2x12", 4 Ohms) and am very happy with the sound I get. The head on it's own is quite thin sounding on its own, but really cuts through in a band setting. I use an Aphex Bass Xciter between my bass and the amp to get a much fuller sound and would recommend the pedal to anyone wanting to 'phatten' up their amp sound. I built an BFM Omni 10 last summer and have yet to test it in anger. I've just had an audition for a band (not taking an untested cab to an audition!) and will be taking the Omni 10 to the next rehearsal.
25. That bass is simply gorgeous. As said before, great proportions and lovely curves. Jon's basses just get better with every one.
