I love my Thumb BO 4 and I intend for my next purchase to be another Warwick too. I don't sing it's praises too much on here because they are a 'Marmite' bass and not everyone gets on with the shape of the neck, or being forced to wear them high to prevent the neck-dive. I'm actually quite happy that they are out of favour at the moment as it means I'm more likely to pick up a bargain 2nd hand

I think you should get Seymour Duncan (Basslines) Quarter Pounders as their P pickup sounds great in my Precision. I used to have the odd rehearsal round the guitarist's house and the drummer would use his electric kit. I found it amazing to be able to bring along my little 75 Watt practice amp and not even have to turn it up past my usual 'bedroom volume'. It was a bit of a practice revelation for me and I loved it to bits. I still prefer the sound of an acoustic kit, but the electric kit was an order of magnitude more practical for rehearsals. My old originals band have also just recorded using the MIDI output from an electric kit and paired the MIDI track with the Drummer From Hell software and it sounds PHENOMINAL! So my 2p is: Rehearsal: Electric Kit (amplified) Recording: Electric Kit (MIDI out + software patches) Live: Acoustic Kit

Had a great day and met some of the nicest people I've ever met! A huuuuge thank you to Silverfoxnik and Merton for arranging and hosting the day, I had an amazing one.

Ooh, another small, light, amplifier. Where did you order it from? I can't find a UK dealer listed on the distributors site http://www.rosetti.co.uk/products/tecamp/tecamp.html

My parents have just come back from a holiday in New York and I was trying to convince them to buy me one of the Eden World Traveller heads while they were out there (they have simple voltage switching built-in too). I couldn't get them to take a break from their holiday and visit a music store though ;(

South East Bass Bash, Saturday 27th September: NEW INFO!
peted replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
URGENT NEWS:- For some reason, the rooms where the Bash is happening on Saturday have changed and we will now be in: Onslow Suite 1 & 2 The Onslow Suite(s) are located in the Academy area of the Holiday Inn site and The Academy has it's own car park on the left hand side as you drive into the Holiday Inn (if you're coming by car that is). Once parked, you go into the lobby of the Academy and the Onslow Suites will be to your left. Access is apparently very easy! There is a bar and restaurant close by to the Onslow Suites and also, a lounge area if you need a bit of quiet time or want to have a chat etc! Here's a link to the Holiday Inn web page which has more info: http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/925/en...ps-_-hi-_-guisu Nik
Probably a good idea to edit the original post on page 1 to include this change too! -
D'oh! Ever flogged something you thought you didn't need, then...
peted replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in General Discussion
I sold a DeArmond Pilot 5 string which I only owned for a few weeks (didn't get on with the extra string). If I'd have kept it then I could have used it in my covers band a few years later. I'm starting to come around to the idea of that extra string and the spacing doesn't feel too tight anymore. [I realise that there is a DeArmond Pilot 5 for sale on this site, I don't have the money!] -
My wife interferes with my bass playing more than my wedding ring does! I also have a titanium wedding band and it's as light as plastic so I hardly notice it. It never comes into contact with the bass. To maintain a happy marriage, remember that you'll have to spend at least 1.5x what you pay for each bass on presents for your Mrs! Plus you'll be limited to the number of bands you can be in at any one time and how many nights a week you can practice.

Who on Basschat has the most expensive bass?
peted replied to Jonny Walker's topic in General Discussion
My most expensive bass is my Warwick Thumb BO 4 which I bought in 2003 for £999 NEW (bargain!). Warwick have just increased their RRPs due to the strong Euro and I think they list the same bass at £1700+ now. I certainly wouldn't pay anything like the RRP, even though I consider my Warwick the best thing since sliced bread. -
Wow! That sounds like great fun. I would have been overwhelmed to 'jam' with those musicians. Is that a regular course, or just a one-off special?

I play fingerstyle and use 3 fingers to keep up with fast-chugging guitars. Start writing your basslines off of the bass drum rhythm. Play mostly lower notes when you want to sound heavy and throw in a few 5ths for harmonies. Anything goes with metal, so experiment

Bass Shapes (jazz, bass, singlecut, completely original)
peted replied to EBS_freak's topic in Bass Guitars
I prefer small-bodied basses, but I also like singlecuts (I don't think that's a mutually exclusive specification). The shape has to have very smooth organic lines and look very natural and flowing. I like the Warwick Thumb and Streamer(/Spector NS) body shapes, but think that the new stuff from Warwick has gone in the wrong direction to my tastes. I *really* like the Sei body shapes and the latest tweaks Jon has made to the Shuker designs. EDIT: BigBeefCheif - I've just realised that I'm the polar opposite of you! -
I've toyed with the concept of owning an Alien acoustic since they first came out (being a Warwick-nut aside!). They are VERY expensive for a bass which is manufactured using cheap labour (I think the JH Sig model is actually made in Germany, correct me if i'm wrong). Warwick aren't too silly though and they price the Alien because they have imposed their strict quality control and designed it with a sound to match the price.

At University one of my Music student house mates got bored of being able to play EVERYTHING on his guitar and tuned it in 5ths to give himself a challenge. Took him about a week before he could play EVERYTHING again on it (b@stard!).

I wouldn't hold any of these conversations behind the singers back. From experience, it can be very daunting to be approached by the rest of your band with an issue that it's plainly obvious they have been conferring about without your knowledge. Be open and honest, but don't be abrasive. Try to bring the subject up in a supportive manner. I would have thought that it is quite strange for someone to actually get worse with practice. Depending on what type of person your singer is, it might be worth either mentioning it to the whole band at rehearsal, or a one-to-one down the pub outside rehearsal, to ask if there are any issues outside the band which are affecting his performance? Suggest that you've noticed recently that he seems to be struggling with the material and ask whether he is unhappy with the songs you are playing or is he having a hard time outside the band which he would like to share? (all sounds very hippy ) Worst thing to do is to exclude him from any discussions with the band.

I have been fortunate that each new bass I've owned has been an improvement on the last. Based on that experience I'm sure that I'll find a bass which will better my current Warwick Thumb BO 4. Not that I'm in any way disappointed with my current Warwick and feel that it reflects everything that I think a bass should be. I'm currently GASing for a Thumb NT 6. I also played a headless Sei Original 4 at The Gallery which has been giving me sleepless nights. For a long while I've considered the Thumb 6 as the last bass I would buy and be happy for it to be my only instrument, so that would have to be my dream bass.

The amps which are available now totally eclipse what was available 10 years ago. I would think it's actually quite difficult to find a really bad amp unless you are really unlucky. "Try before you buy" has to be the best advise and make sure you really identify a sound which you like before going shopping. For buying a bass - Try out a 2nd hand Warwick. If you get on with the shape of the neck (people either love it or hate it) then you're likely to get a >£1000 bass for half-or-less price than it sold new as they really don't seem to be keeping their value these days.

I use a Line6 Lowdown Studio as a practice amp and love it, but I wouldn't necessarily classify it as 'hifi' as it's a modelling amp. Same applies with the Roland. You would probably be better off with the Eden Nemesis mentioned earlier or, on a tight budget, one of the Hartke practice amps for hifi sound.

That is a stunning bass. I could never justify owning one myself, but they sound so good in the right hands. I frequently pop along to the Jerzy Drozd website to look at the stunning basses.

My first baby is 4 weeks old this week and I have no idea what day of the week it is, and i'm barely operating on the amount of sleep i'm getting. Enjoy!

I have played metal and am also a Warwick Thumb BO owner and find that it's a great source of growly goodness. From your setup I would recommend trying out a few different combinations of speakers. I can't imagine a 4x8 cab moving sufficient air for a metal band. For the best setup you'll want something with some moving mass to make the floor shake. Whether that be an 8x10, 4x10, 2x15 really depends on your sound or where you'd like to sit in the mix.
