1. Ooh, that's very nice. Gibson seem to do short-scale much better than rest.
2. I read the 'Why I soldy Ric' at around lunchtime yesterday - it was at 3 pages I think. To save me about 14 minutes in reading the rest, could someone please summarise the thread here?
3. I have a first year MIM P bass - 1991. Bought in 1993 Other than a replacement tort guard and some 70s Fender tuning pegs its stock. These first year ones have a reputation for being dogs but I'm happy with it. I haven't played many others to compare though.
4.
Do you want the ones from before or after he was replaced in '66?
Ha ha!
5.
All My Loving, She Said She Said, Rain worth a listen?
She Said, She Said's baseline was played by George Harrison. Apparently Macca stormed out of the sessions in a huff so George just played it. Still, a great bassline. Macca had said Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is his definitive line. It certainly moves around the chords in the bridge in a lovely melodic manor. Upbeat Macca? Try And Your Bird Can Sing. The bridge section has definite Jamison influence.
6.
That's exactly what we are considering, not sure whether it will work though.
I think it'd work brilliantly. Two tributes for the price of one, with only the best songs due to doing two 45 min sets (or whatever it would be). Encore with a mash up of Whole Lotta Love/Rosie! You'd have to work our what to do with Malcolm (or Angus) during the LZ set though. Perhaps he/she could do the keyboard parts?
7.
My new covers band acquired a new singer last week and during our first session together, he said he can do Bon Scott and Robert Plant, we all thought, yeah right! So we burst into Whole Lotta Of Rosie followed by Rock & Roll, and he absolutely nailed them both, so we are now considering being a Tribute band for both, as well as doing covers under another name.
Can I suggest AC/LZ as your name?
8. I've always thought of Hofner 500/1 Violin basses as weird. (As I typed that I could feeling myself developing GAS for one!)
9. I don't think the problem occurs with Piezo pickups, so you could use an electro-acoustic basss. If you're happy with that solution you could then look into "normal" basses with piezo pickups. As for any guitarists in your band, same solution, but they'll need far more convincing than us pragmatic bassists.
10. When the two 8 ohm cabs are connected together you'll get 4 ohms. So yes, that's a perfect match to the heads you mention (That's assuming you run the cabs in parallel. Which, unless you are doing something crazy with your speaker wiring, you will be).
11. Loads of mid to late period Beatles songs are deceptively quirky with their timing.
12. Are you playing any more gigs with the current line up before the others leave? If so, one of the best opportunities would be to tell the auidience you need new member.
13. This is a bit off topic but make sure the neck is a suitable fit for a Telebass. TB necks have a square heel profile, not a standard P or J shape. Now, I've read that a standard P/J neck will fit in a TB body, albeit with a small gap where the P/J 'rounds' off but it's not a perfect fit. Apologies if you already knew this. Incidently, I have a Squire TB and have been thinking it'd be great for a fretless double bassy tone. James
14.
You can see where the headstock has been filled.
Interesting to note that the conversion has retained the standard 4 string pickup pole piece arrangement
15.
I'd agree with the previous post. I have a Yamaha Bex semi and it's only slightly louder when unplugged than a solid. Someone is selling a Vox headphone amp on the miscellaneous page. This might be a good solution if you're not able to practise unplugged. I'm lucky to live in a very quiet house.
The problem for me is more about the convenience of just picking up a bass and it being loud enough to play without plugging anything in.
16. Hi I'd be interested to know opinions on the loudness of semi-acoustic/hollow bodied basses compared with acoustic basses. Are they a lot quieter, not much difference,...? I have an acoustic bass, which is usefull and loud enough for grabbing to quickly practice on, but pretty useless when playing with other musicians unles it's amplified. So I was thinking, I may as well replace it with a more versatile semi-acoustic, so long as they are loud enough for solo practice. (I hope that makes sense) EDIT: I'd be looking for a short scale semi.
17. I read reviews of the Squier VI that say it sounds like a baritone guitar when used through a guitar amp and like a bass when played through a bass rig. I'd imagine it'll sound not a million miles away from a 4 string short scale bass. An aside - for the sort of sonic space you're trying to fill, I wonder if you'd be better looking into 8 or 12 string basses. They are basicly 4 string basses paired with one or two octave strings.
18.
what is this black magic?
VHS will make a comeback. That and mullet haircuts on all session bassists!
19. Thanks for the heads up. I've opened a fresh E180 and set the video.
20.
Affinity is the entry level, then Vintage Modified and the Deluxe Actives are in the middle. Top is the Classic Vibe range. The prices reflect this I think.
Thanks, that's clarified it for me. I actually have a '91 Fender MIM and a Squier VM but have never bothered to see where the VM sits in the hierarchy. Incidently, the Squier feels much better than the MIM, but the MIM sounds better, but only just.
21. Hi Apologies if this has been asked or answered before. Could someone tell me how the Squier ranges (affinity, vintage modified, etc) are supposed to line up from top of the range to bottom (I appreciate that this is subject to opinion, I'd like to know Fender pitch the range). Cheers
22. Bought most of a bitsa fretless P bas from Mike. Very happy. Good communications, very helpful. Thanks Mike
23. Don't get rid of it. I gave away my first bass recently (i got it in 1989) and have regretted it ever since. I'm sentimental though. Do you have fretless? If not, why don't you defret the old bass? Giving it a unique purpose could give you a good reason to keep it.
