While people seem to be in let's-all-bash-one-of-the-few-remaining-specialist-bass-dealers mode, I do hope similar negative topics will now be created to attack anyone else who is trying to supply us with a decent choice of high-quality basses. After all, we wouldn't want any of these deluded fools to survive in business, would we? And then just think of all the great topics we can start, bemoaning the good old days when there were actually real shops in the UK which would let you play a bass before buying it. As somebody famous once said: "I may be right, I may be wrong, but I know you're gonna miss me when I'm gone."
Those Lull T-bird pickups are fantastic, some of the best I've ever heard.
That's really the key. I loved the T5 from the photos & spec, but the moment I decided to buy it was the instant I started playing it in the shop. SE Bass Bash 2017 - with Steve Lawson and Davey Rimmer
Happy Jack replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in Events
Actually, scratch that, I'll bring my 5 string fretless Rick Turner Renaissance... that's up for sale Sx
Please don't Steve. I have enough basses already, and even Silvia's legendary patience can only be pushed so far ... I'd prefer it if you'd bring a Jazz of some description to sell. I hate Jazz basses. -
Vocal harmony pedals. Anyone use them live?
Happy Jack replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
I use this https://www.andertons.co.uk/p/996012051/live-vocal-fx/tc-helicon-voicetone-h1-intelligent-harmony-pedal in conjunction with a TC Helicon Mic Mechanic. The Mic Mechanic is a superb tool, and really helps if you sing in a band but you're no Robert Plant. The VoiceTone H1 is probably the easiest to use of their harmony pedals. If you play guitar (or bass) then you run a signal from your instrument to/through the pedal, set the key to 'Guitar', and it works out the key for itself. If you sing and play no instrument, then you simply set the key manually to whatever the song is in. Like all such tools, it pays to spend some time rehearsing with it to see what works and what doesn't. [Blindingly obvious] If used without an instrument, it's harder to use as a pedal since you need to place it where you can change the key easily. [/Blindingly obvious] -
Advice on trading to a newbie in a foreign country.
Happy Jack replied to edstraker123's topic in General Discussion
+1 Given the sheer volume of trading I've indulged in over the last 10 years, it's actually quite gratifying how good the overall experience has been. But that doesn't alter the high risk factor in dealing with a complete stranger in another country. Sending £1000 to that complete stranger at least leaves a clear audit trail that may come in handy if you need to involve the local police. Doing a swop deal is potentially far trickier, even if you both agree to use high-end couriers with proper recording systems in place. And that's before we get into each of your relative estimates of the worth of each bass. Not many of us can afford to lose a high-end bass and simply 'write it off to experience'. -
Always check with me first, Mick. You know it makes sense ...
Looks lovely - is it possible to use and blend both channels at once, for example plugging a Wal in via both XLR and jack?
Plug in two basses simultaneously, one channel each? Yes, I've done that. Plug one bass into both channels simultaneously? I imagine so, but I've never done it!

Slightly tired but nowt wrong wi' it.It has years of life left in it but is worth no money, and I have no further use for it. Free to any Basschatter who can collect from Harrow HA1 3RG.

*** SOLD *** Demeter VTBP-201 valve pre-amp

Yup, it's the original, classic, 'black-face' pre-amp that everyone used to drool over. Works as well as new, but it's not new. I can tell. It's got scratches on it and stuff. Spec? You want spec? OK. http://www.demeteram...t&product_id=50 Bizarrely, it occupies 1.5U of rack space. No, me neither. It also works when installed upside down. I don't have any original packaging for it but, if collected, I'm happy to chuck in the Stagg 4U rackbox for no extra charge.

It's a 400W head with channels for electric and acoustic instruments, allowing you to swop instantly (well, almost instantly) between a Fender Precision and a double bass, or between a Wal and a bass uke. Whatever floats your boat. It's not a Class D uber-lightweight thingy. It has proper transformers and everything. The amp weighs a bit, but the sound carries that weight when you play. Here's the full spec from Maruszczyk: https://www.public-p...-basstank-black It has the usual assortment of funny-shaped holes in the back. And it comes with this really neat carry case. I'm really not interested in trusting British couriers with high-quality electronics. Hell, I'm not interested in trusting British couriers with organising a piss-up in a brewery. I would greatly prefer this to be collection only, either from my office in the West End or from my studio in Harrow. The latter is better, because then you can try it before parting with your hard-earned dosh.

Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread

So it's from 1998. -
That's seen a few gigs ...

OK, I think I understand now. Your biggest problem is likely to be the available depth, I reckon. The size of cavity you want to use is going to seriously restrict your options.

Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread
Happy Jack replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
Hi Nelson, have got photos of the back plate, both sides of it? -
And I upload them to a dropbox the next day so everyone can practice along to it,a great aid, so we come to the next jam with new ideas.
I used to do this, until I discovered that none of my bandmates was actually listening to the recordings ...
-
With long-standing bands I never bother, I feel there's little to be learned and/or there's loads to be learned but it will spark an almighty row if I bring it up "after all these years". With any new venture, I always record every rehearsal. If there's nothing worth keeping then I can recycle every electron, and if we do something a bit special then it's a bloody good thing to have a record available. Also worth bearing in mind is that, when learning new material, it's all very well playing along with the original recording to familiarise yourself with the changes and so on, but it's no substitute for playing along with a recording of your own bandmates ...

It's hardly that surprising that identical quadruplets will have similar talent on bass.

Here's the very wonderful Ed Friedland reviewing the Genz Benz Streamliner 900 and A/B-ing it briefly against the ShuttleMax. https://youtu.be/d-27szg61bw?t=2m53s I've brought you into the video at the point where he plays the same phrase twice through each of the two amps, on the same settings. I expected him to say "So, as you can hear, the two amps sound utterly identical". Erm ... not so much ... Fair enough, I'm using a pair of earbuds from a laptop's headphone output. I'm quite prepared to believe that I'd be able to hear more through a high-end soundcard and a pair of £200 headphones, but as far as I can make out these two sounds/tones are indistinguishable. Is it just my ears?
