1.
re maple vs rosewood, Guitarbank's Jazz bass comparison video reveals the difference again - I am guessing its inherent in the different wood types
I used to wonder why a rosewood board should sound different to a maple board with the string in contact with the fret and not the fingerboard itself until I realised that the fret is anchored in the fingerboard and I suppose that contributes somewhat to how a string vibrates.
2. I thought they were always 250K pots; I think more than a coincidence that all the rosewood boards sounded closer to each other and different to the maple but without opening them all up to confirm the component values it's impossible to say.
3. They all sound good; I was surprised at the degree of difference between rosewood vs maple fingerboard (and received wisdom says maple is snappier which is what I was hearing). Nice comparison and great playing.
4. I'd never heard of Ron Baker either but it seems my ears were right LOL
5.
A square wave is actually made up of a series of sine waves, all the odd harmonics of the signal. The amplitude of each harmonic is inversely proportional to its harmonic relationship, so if the fundamental is 1V p-p, the 3rd harmonic will be 1/3V p-p, the 5th harmonic will be 1/5V p-p, the 7th harmonic 1/7V p-p, and so ad infinitum. I once built a square wave generator using a TTL IC, so it was providing 5V p-p, tuned to about 1kHz, and it would happily radiate into the RF range.
Yeah I think I first learned about Fourier Series when I did A Level physics though I've never used that knowledge in any practical setting - what was your signal generator for?
6. Have you tried playing flats with a pick? That's what I'm hearing anyway.
7. No sign of any truss rod adjustment so probably doesn't have one. Might work as a bow once strung up, for any budding archers out there...
8. When I've needed to do this kind of thing I just hold a variety of drill bits next to the screws I want to drill a hole for and select the best match (in your case I suppose that's the width of the thread).
9.
I used old pieces or carpet and cable tied them together, not pretty but does the job. Carpet pile to the inside!
Sounds like a good idea; plenty of shops have carpet oddments they'll flog for a few quid and you could use that super strong carpet tape to join the sides together.
10. Great to see that the bass has a new lease of life
11. Am glad you'll be able to get a TV you want - I know it's now too late to try but the odd (interesting?) thing with my Samsung TV is that the set has different volume settings for the in-built speakers and for the headphone socket, so I could have my headphones or some external speakers plugged in and have the volume set at say 20 and when they're unplugged the TV sound comes back on and at the volume I left it at previously (say 10).
12. Not for me, however if you could substitute the control pad with a 2-axis foot pedal controller (like the Zoom Z-Pedal) it'd be far more user friendly IMHO.
13. First time I've heard about any kind of 'hate for Hartke' but then I've only fairly recently reacquainted myself with the world of bass playing...
14. Excellent, definitely be watching this
15. If you get a nice chorus unit (or similar detune effect) it can really spoil you in that your bass can sound really full and spacious, so much so that when you turn it off you can rather miss it - definitely an effect to consider as an always on with fretless.

17. Yeah 9v batteries ought to last about 6 months if an active bass is played a couple of hours daily (and the instrument lead taken out afterwards) so the 4 hour lifespan means there's definitely something wrong. Unless the active tone controls don't do much it ought to be abundantly clear what does what, same for the volume and blend. I've got 4 active basses and a single passive and I like both types of tone control though I reckon if I were to get another Jazz it'd be a passive and obviously an active with a Stingray type... I can recommend the Squier Deluxe Jazz Active IV if you want an active bass with (on mine) totally silent single coil pups.
18. Favour the rear pickup on a Jazz bass?
19. I see playing ahead of or behind the beat as just breaking away from strict synchronisation with the drummer and if you're consistently ahead of or behind the beat you're still playing in time and at the same tempo as the drummer, just not precisely syncing with, for sake of argument, their kick drum - think in terms of echo (after) and pre-echo (before) maybe?
20. Bird's eye maple fingerboard on that price bass! Arrrghhhh I'm going to have to be very restrained now and not do something very silly with my wallet LOL
21.
If you were the real Sting though, you would be used to being called a w***er, and far worse :-)
I wonder how bad the singer gets it in U2 tribute bands?
22. Yeah Tony Levin's well known for his use of those 'funk fingers'; you'll hear their use on several recordings. More info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk_fingers and to hear the effect: http://youtu.be/Qt87bLX7m_o
23. But even if he had told you they were looking for your replacement it's not like you'd have said 'hey I still want to play!' as you clearly don't. Maybe the guitarist knows your feelings on this as well as you do yourself and realises you've had enough of the whole thing. He wants to carry on so he needs a new 'Sting'.
24. I've got a Samsung smart TV but the not the model you've got; however I expect the menu/options to be similar. The TV will have an extensive menu system and as mentioned you might need to change some settings to get the TV to transmit PCM encoded data over the optical cable - there'll probably be an 'E-Manual' button on your TV's remote that takes you into an on-screen manual where hopefully it'll explain what the various menu options do. Here's the link for your surround sound system manual, again you need to become familiar with how to select different input sources http://files2.europe...e%20English.PDF Sorry if I seem to be stating the obvious here and you already know all about the features on both systems but troubleshooting stuff like this is difficult when you're not right in front of the equipment. Good luck! PS: Where you might be 'going wrong' is in not telling your new TV that you want to listen to sound via your external speaker system instead of listening to sound through the TV's built-in speakers (I mentioned this in my first reply in this thread). If your TV menu system is like mine then try Menu > Sound > Speaker Settings > Speaker Select > External Speaker
25. I've found a manual for your surround sound system. Have you selected the optical input correctly on the amp (the Digital PCM Audio button) and does the indicator light up to indicate signal detection? Looks like you need to tell the source (TV or Tivo box connected via optical cable) that it needs to send PCM over SPDIF.
