1. A flippin heck this one`s dropped quick type bump! Jez
2. Runs and checks out the new ad I have just posted to see if I am guilty of any of the above!!! Jez Ps It is the best bass I have ever owned/played, lol.
3. At the back end of last year, I got this from Guitarguitar in Glasgow. I kept it for a while then traded it with Barnaclebob for his Status T bass. Whilst the T bass has an awsome sound, I couldn`t get on with the looks, so we traded back again. I have come to the conclusion that I prefer Jazz basses, so I am looking to swap this P for a US jazz, an Ibanez or similar, 4 string only or sell for £570. It`s a 08 new model US P, new style case, new Ernie Ball super slinkys and has schaller straplocks. It`s in great condition, just a few small dings (no wood showing) on the bottom edge of the bass where it would rest on your knee. It is one of the best looking P basses I have seen. Some of the pictures make it more yellowish looking than it is, if that makes sense. I would prefer collection from Paisley just outside Glasgow, but am willing to travel and meet up with someone within a reasonable distance. Not into posting. Any questions, gives a shout. 4. Cheers Doddy, good to hear. Serious Jazz gas...............Again! Jez
5. I have seen a few posts about the P bass Mexican version but has anyone got the Jazz version? Is the active circut any good? I know the score with Fender`s quality control but just wondering if the bass is up too much? Cheers, Jez
6. Wayne Dub Junkie is the man to ask about G&L``s. Jez
7. You have to be carefull when buying the Dead as there are many versions of the Dead. American beauty is, imo, their best album and the most accessable along with Workingmans dead which came out just before. From 67 to 69 they were physcadelic/jazzy/bluesyish. From late 69, they were more like a country rock band. When they came back in 76, they made some right dodgy albums. I really only like the stuff from 70 to 74, especially when they had 1 drummer as opposed to 2. Dicks picks 1 from December 73 and DP12 from June 74 and DP24 from March 74 (the wall of sound test) being my faves. Some fantastic guitar work going on. As Nas states, be warned that when buying form the Dicks picks series of live albums that some of them have bum notes and dodgy vocals. As they used to say, the train frequentley left the track. By the way Nas, I bloody hate dark star and have never listened to a version of it all the way through! And I don`t really care for Phil Lesh as a bass player, far too busy. Jez
8.

Those new Ikea chairs dont look very comfortable. Jez
9. Good of you to start this thread Nas. As "the only deadhead in the village", I need some help to spread the word!! Deadhead joke: What do deadheads say when they run out of weed? What is that goddam awful music! Jez
10. Aye, the Wall of sound did work but as already stated, the cost of building it and the transport and set up cost almost bankrupted the band! They constructed it due to being unhappy with the sound quality that was available with the pa systems that were used at that time.It was devised partly by Stanley Owsley who was best known for producing some of the finest LSD of the 60`s. Says a lot. Amongst deadheads, the year of the wall, 74, (sorry Nas, the first time it was used was at the Cow palace on the 23rd of March 1974 and it was broken up after the farwell gigs in mid October) is regarded as some of their best work. Even though it looks like a super loud system, it wasn`t really. There was other band that were louder, the wall was build for sound quality, so the person at the back of the hall could hear as well as the guy at the front. The band took a break in late 74 and when they resumed touring, they had moved to a much smaller set up which apparently, sounded just as good. The Guild bass was know as "the godfather" and there was very little left of the orignal bass. The pickups were by Alembic and were 2 low impedance trapezoid pickups with external hum canceling coils and one that was a quad pickup (one for each string). Yes I am a deadhead but I`m gettin help for it Jez
11. Yep, The Allmans did it and Gregg Allman also did it on his solo album, Laid back. It is a bit mellower on the solo album. Jez
12.
Jeans!!! I keep meaning to ask the shiny fans, what kind of jeans do you all wear? I assume you wear plain, dark denim ones. Or do you wear faded or distressed ones?
Well, I`ve had these jeans on for 4 days now. 70`s Quo type jeans are the only way to go..... Jez
13. On a similar vien. A few weeks ago we had a dep drummer and he was brilliant! He told us the last time he depped, the bands usual drummer was at a rehersal to tell him how to play the parts. The dep started to play and right away it was obvious to everyone that he was much better than the band`s drummer. After playing a couple of songs, the guitarist turned and said to the usual drummer, "ever felt that someone has just shag*ed your wife?" Jez
14.
I *think* the issue is that bass wavelengths are much nearer the size of a room, so weird interference patterns, resonances and suchlike are much more pronounced than higher frequency instruments. Could be talking bollox mind you!
Well said Professor Blob- b.m.a, a.a., b.d.s, r.a.c. Jez- t.i.t.
15.
how many weeks of sanding did it take... the poly on my VMJ appears to be really thick...
Yeah the finish seems really thick but it only took me about 15 mins to do the job with a fine sanding block. After that, I gave it a quick rub down with a finer bit of sandpaper and the job was done. I was suprised how quick the job took and it turned out really well. Here`s a photo. Sorry for the poorish quality, crap camera. Jez
16. Merchant city in Glasgow has one in for £279. Runs to check credit card balance!!! Jez
17. As the Doc says, the logo isnt right. From late 62 there should be 4 patent numbers under the precision decal and it should be mounted lower down and too the right a bit. All info nicked from the excelent The Fender bass-an illustrated history. Me thinks someone`s telling porkies!! Jez
18. Gotta say, I`ve had 2 of the new US p basses and have never had a neck dive problem with them or any other p for that matter. Having said that I always use a wide leather strap (oooerrr) with a suede backing. Whilst I think they are the classic bass design, I keep buying them and moving them on again as I end up unhappy with the sound but I think that is just down too me! But I have recently built one from all the Fender/Squire parts I had lying around and am enjoying it again. Jez
19. I have another idea for ya..... Take one VMJ bass, play it for a few weeks and then get fed up with the nice natural finish. Next, dismantle it and with a £3 sanding block (fine grade) rub off the clear varnish. Next, go to Halfords and buy a can of satin black car paint and give it a couple of coats-don`t bother with primer, much too professional. Admire the finish. Now the tricky bit. Take it to a hot sweaty gig and play it for 3 hours. Now, the reason for doing this is that a guitarist friend of mine has told me that the finish will wear really fast and will look suitably mojo`ed in no time at all and it will look as if it has been played for decades. So what was the result? The black finish from the back of the bass managed to transfer itself onto my Wranglers giving my jeans the mojo look but the bass looks the same Beware the god of artifical mojo!!! Jez
20.
Hey brilliant. I thought Carole Kaye was on more tracks than that though.
I thought that Carol Kaye played on every session in the 60`s . She seems to think so! I knew that Larry "the mole" Taylor from Canned Heat played on some tracks but didn`t realise he played on that many tracks. Intresting info WOT. Jez
21. Get yourself a Squire Vintage Modified or if you can bump up the budget slightly, a new Classic Vibe Jazz or a second hand one will be in budget. You can`t go wrong. Musicman copies, you could get a OLP copy for around £150ish but I don`t know how good they are but someone will no doubt put you right on them.. The Musicmans SUB`s are starting to go up in price and would more than likely be outwith your budget. Another option is the Ibanez ATK. Sounds like a Musicman and Hagguy has one for sale here for £250. A bargain price and they are really good basses abilet a bit fugly. Give the Epi`s a body swerve as they are more suited to classic rock/blues type stuff. Jez
22. Our guitarist has a Gibson les paul studio and he re-tunes it after every, yes every, song. I have mentioned about taking it to a guitar tech as there is something wrong with it but it falls on deaf ears. It`s so bad that the singer makes a joke of it now. Having said that, he`s always in tune! Jez
23. Check this out from one of my fellow countrymen. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Jazz-Bass-Gui...=item35a7d6b224 A bit expensive for a VMJ with a Jap neck. Jez
24. Hey PB, that`s a sh*t way to treat people. Too bloomin old? You are better off without them! That`s the bunch of tossers I almost joined. They sounded like a bunch of dreamers so I never bothered chasing it up. The way they put it across to me was that they wanted to get gigging asap and that was last November if I remember right. Up the Spiders!!!! Jez
25. That`s the wrong shape and style of logo for a 74. Og, I think you are right in saying it could be a 62 re-issue. They used that type of logo in 62 according to The Fender bass book. After 64, the "custom offset body" moved to the end of the head. Having said that, the tunning keys are the wrong style if it`s a 62. Mabye I am just being pedantic. If it`s a real Fender re-issue, we`ve missed a bargin. Still, I would know how to spell the name of the bass if I had did 100 gigs with it as is claimed. Jez
