You mean that if someone chooses a cab and thinks it's the business, then any other brand of cab should therefore be criticised? That would be totally illogical and surely cannot be the case! I don't think other bass guitar brands are terrible because I choose a Fender (for example)... it's a personal, subjective choice. And of course budget can have a lot to do with it. Obviously I like BF cabs, but over the years I've also gigged and enjoyed Schroeder, Markbass, Ampeg, Eden, Orange, Gallien-Krueger, Marshall... I'm currently very happy with my Rumble combo (which allegedly has Eminence drivers)... I really like the BFM J12 I built and fitted with a Kappalite 3012HO... I've heard lots of other cab brands I like including Berg, Aguilar, GENZ (RIP)... yes, Ashdown... even Behringer. I don't think I've ever heard a cab I genuinely disliked, apart from a WEM cab I had in the late 70s... which wasn't that great... or maybe I just wasn't that great at playing back then...
Yes.
Thanks for all the suggestions, so far I think its a straight shot between the ampeg ba 110 and fender rumble 40. It might come down to ampeg based on price, but will see.
Before you buy the Ampeg ba110 you might want to read the worst amps you've played through thread on talkbass. The Ampeg ba combo series did not do well at all!

I'm less and less surprised at what can sometimes look an extreme setting can work very well. Sometimes I think people are scared to really crank the settings, like its a taboo, that's what they are there for and that's why the knobs or sliders have a wide range.
Careful! You're not allowed to say how good Barefaced cabs are on this forum, there are people here who have never used a Barefaced cab or even SEEN one in the flesh, yet they will be upset! For some reason Alex's success drives them completely insane!! Seriously though, I have huge GAS for a One10... Soon, soon. Congratulations on your purchase.
I think its because barefaced do get a lot of great reviews and are well loved, it can seem sometimes that all you see is barefaced this and that. So I think some folk get a bit funny as they use a different brand of cab. I think folk should chill out and remember that we are not teenage console fanboys. We are older supposedly wiser fanboys haha.
If it's the Fernandes p bass on ebay. I have one which has a similar problem. Mine had a ski jump and would only take low tension flats. After several attempts to sort the neck out (washers ,heating neck etc ) I just bought a used neck on ebay. Its a pity because the original neck is one of best necks I have played
Ski jumps can't be fixed so easy. You have two options, level the frets and create a drop off in the last frets and/or frets off and level the board. Both of these I've done with great success. Washers, shims etc won't work and heating the neck for a ski jump is not a method I've heard off. -
Think I have a noodle in mind already will put it up in the next few days. Going to record it simply but direct this time. I really would like to mic a cab decently! At some point. However I would surely pick up the fan noise right?
Trace Elliott commando. Terrible amp.
I disagree on the terrible bit, I had one and while not great they were certainly better than say a carlsbro cobra etc etc
I believe Eric, Jack & Ginger used to rely on copious quantities of heroin to get through a performance. Might be worth a try.
Hahaha!

Currently using two nordstrand big singles and an east preamp. I'm not getting the sound I want from the rear pickup hard to explain what I'm looking for which is no help really. I play with flats. I'm thinking of trying a new rear pu any ideas I want to run it active but on the rare occasion I switch to passive.

Hmmm well there's a lot isn't there. I would suggest the fender rumble v3 40w has the same pre as the bigger models (smaller under 40w models don't) there light and have a half decent sound. Or the Roland bass cube 20xl I had the older 30w model and they are great little practice amps you get plenty of boss related effects built in too. Both work well with effects.

Do you notice a lot of difference in your string gauge and tone.?
Twincam replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I think I notice the playability of say a smaller gauge to that of the heavier gauges. -
Congrats Camden rob. Just a thought but since we have a noodle hall of fame, maybe come the end of the year we could have a vote on noodle of the year with the entries obviously being the past years winners. And we can crown them that years noodle champion. Just for a laugh.

I actually don't like it. But I admire the guts it takes to order and wait for something like this. Of course I'm happy you love it. How come it was stuck in customs? I would of been panic stricken
Right, ok, turned my attention away from that one as it sounded too confusing. But, then I found this bass with another neck issue. Neck bowed, but truss rod at max. Truss rod replacement, or just putting a new washer in at the nut?
That neck isn't bowed and on the second pic when I put a stright edge on the neck, not scientific but it looks like back bow which makes sense if the necks cranked. -
Is the market for older instruments in decline?
Twincam replied to karlfer's topic in General Discussion
One thing I can't understand is the real "vintage" crap that goes for high prices. I can see vintage bass prices falling a bit more before before they even out and maybe recover a little. I think the days are numbered to be honest. -
I'm not a big Maruszczyk fan I think some look like rubbish my own opinion. But ezbass I'm loving your new bass very classy looking! Nice finish on the body too.

Were pub/smaller venue bands quieter in the past?
We're very close to getting on to the 'heft' thing here...........
Haha close but just yet thankfully! Although I suppose it could be said that also cabs are getting smaller, more efficient yes but they won't match up to the multi speakers and larger cabs that's physics so even cabs are part of the heft not just the amp. sh*t just mentioned heft. Pleased with yourself? -
Buy yourself a Wudtone UTFL and a HB Deko to practise on...so satisfying being able to sort out fret problems yourself and it's as close to foolproof as its possible to get.
I agree about learning yourself but it takes a lot of practice and I've had some horrors brought to me that people have had a go at or even supposed luthier/techs have "fixed" I wouldn't say anyone can do fret work never mind the higher standards of work and setup. If your going to though definitely get practice in with cheap basses first! -
Noodle Off! Sounds like it should be either an insult or a euphemism Seriously, good idea if it ends in a draw
Not a euphemism why do you think he is named KingBollock! Haha

Twincam replied to TPTroll's topic in Repairs and Technical
If he says high frets and old then you can bet it needs a proper going over rather than your normal regular setup. Ask if the truss rod works if so then everything else is easier to work on. There is a list of bc members based on location at the top of this repairs section, that might be able to help you out for much less than a shop. -
Were pub/smaller venue bands quieter in the past?
Twincam replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
Just a thought what's the point in anything over 500w as if you need more power surely your in a venue you need pa support!? So why get a bigger amp it won't throw the power out even multi stacks in really big venues and above you need pa support no matter how big the rig(s). Unless your playing really big venues and I can see why you would need a stack and high power or multi stacks as well as a pa. Although I'm sure after so much power it's just for show. Anyhow I'm pleased the thread hasn't broken down yet haha -
My recollection is that back in the day, most musicians and particularly bass players in pub bands generally sounding like arse because everyone was pushing under powered amps to their limits, or even worse several players sharing one amp and/or sharing an equally under powered PA. Seeing a whole band go though an rubbish HH 150 PA is not an experience I want to repeat in a hurry. Having said that though I think I've yet to see a bass player in a pub band using the sort of premium gear routinely discussed on BC - it seems the majority of players out there are using ropey old peavey or TE kit or if I'm lucky a slightly less ropey ashdown setup. Crap old 1x15 combos still seem to be remarkably popular, I think I've seen someone using commodity 2x10 or 4x10 maybe half a dozen times in 30 years and a decent mid range cab like an SWR or Eden maybe once or twice - as for any of the the BC "usual suspects" well forget it. I can definitely count on the fingers of one hand the number of occasions when I've though "hey thats a nice bass sound".
I started seeing bands early 2000s so by then the quality will have improved from years past. But I can certainly imagine the general sound quality has only got better of course. But I would say that's mainly because of the prices going down so separate pa, amps etc etc are much cheaper to buy and I'm guessing that began in the 90s if not the 80s but that's me guessing. All the bass players I've seen are a mixture of half decent equipment (not high end) and not through the pa, the last two were a fender rumble mk2 350 head into a mark bass 2x10 sounded fantastic, loud and they were turned down. Although was a v small pub and the drummer had a small kit. Time before that was an Ampeg 4x10 can't recall the heads but seemed an Eden me something else oldish solid state sounded alright in a small to medium venue in a loud band! Pretty sure he said 400w. -
