Been messing around with the valve drive on my amp. It's alright and useable for some things. I'm wondering does anyone use it all the time even for tunes traditionally played clean?

Another scam is you get a PayPal message saying you have funds, you click on that emails link and it's not the official site but you don't realise enter your details they get your password etc and proceed to empty your bank via transfers etc

Well here is mine for the month still recorded very simply but direct this time. This is a noodle I first did a year ago I think, been wanting to refine it and put it to use sometime I may just do that. I personally don't think it suits my flatwounds though. https://youtu.be/UqMRNUg0tss

Interesting I'm using an abm albeit an evo 3 500. And I find the opposite its a bit pants at house levels and woolly but seems to come alive at higher volumes with no farting out. That is with a 2x10 or 1x15 but there not mini cabs. In fact the 15" that I use isn't even rated for anywhere near the 300w it puts into it, although it's a sealed cab. But even with the input at about 7-8 and the volume up to half way it's not farting out although it won't be far off. The above advice is all good. Especially make sure the push flat/shape is pressed in! This means it's flat. Another thing to check is that the cabs themselves are sound and the speaker screws are all tight etc.

I've shipped a few cabs, valve amps and many basses. I always worry myself sick and especially as I always label them fragile with tape and write on them this way up etc. Thankfully nothing has went wrong yet! And I use parcelforce so probably only a matter of time haha.

I've noticed a few admittedly slightly older design although there still being made that kinda remind me of old top loading vcr's where you would have to tune them in and fiddle with tracking etc.

Manton Customs Wooden Guitar or Bass Bridge Tutorial

Very nice work. -
"Heft" = volume displacement. Volume displacement = cone area x cone excursion. Historically 15"s have tended to have longer cone excursion than smaller drivers because of what they're designed to do. But if you design a 10" with similar parameters to a 15" but slightly greater cone excursion then two of those 10"s will deliver equal heft to the one 15". Generic 8x10"s have a lot of heft because they have a lot of volume displacement, with the huge total cone area more than making up for the lack of cone excursion. But make a 10" driver with more cone excursion and you don't need as many of them to get HEFT!!! Same for 12"s - or 8" or 6" or 18" or 21" etc.
Yes indeed very true I get the science. Although I still think that 15s in general have a certain sound and feel to them which is HEFT! Lol

Just to say cabs really don't matter to me and I don't mind a scruffy cab either. But the amp head has to look right. Using an Ashdown abm at the min and they are well built but also they look right, although looking at it now it does remind me of old science equipment.

As the title really. I've seen a few amp heads that look a bit like a cheap brand car stereo from the early 2000s that are supposedly the business but the design would really put me off. Then there's been a few combos which look like a Maplins pa or something. To me things really have to look decent to buy.

Ive just hacked off my ears with a rusty bread knife.

I thought this was going to be about a bad modification to an amp head! -
Must say I do pretty much prefer 15 inch speakers. It's sounds very common to say but they really do give a certain something smaller speakers just don't give. And only 15s can deliver heft! Unless your using like an 8x10 fridge.

A few caps needed re doing, and a few other little things got a little glue. Noticed the board with the larger components and heatsinks was flexing and making it vibrate so I put something non conductive and relatively heat proof under it, seems to of worked well.

Love a jazz with a maple neck.
I'll admit to never having felt comfortable with the very word 'competition', which is why a adhere strictly to the use of 'Challenge'. To me, the very fact of entering (either the Noodle Bar or the Basschat Challenge...) is challenge enough, and the voting and stuff is just to give some recognition. 'Winning' is having posted a file; the rest is (again, to me...) just dressing. That's really why I started doing my 'Play Of The Day', as I find it slightly odd (old duffer that I am...) that all the music seems to to not get its full share of encouragement. I understand the notion of keeping it short and simple, and quite recognise the difference with the more elaborate compositions in the Challenge (many of which have no bass at all, or have never been physically played by human hands...). Just sayin'; I may fetch our ESP Baritone guitar to have a bash. Does that count as a bass; that's how it's strung and tuned at the moment..?
Oh now what have you started with the baritone question! Lol
Good discussion guys! The looper rule is currently very ambiguous. Give that - for this month - let's just keep things lax and agree that it's ok to set up the layers of a looper outside of the 60 seconds - so you can prep the loops before you hit record. We'll then maybe tighten up this rule for next month. I do like the PRESS RECORD - PLAY BASS - PRESS STOP suggestion by Rob. I think that gets across the 'rules' nice and succinctly, without there being too many 'rules'... which I'm also keen to avoid (being a closet anarchist). So for this month, do as thou wilt and we'll fix the looper thing next time. Sound fair?
I think that's fair for this time and we have nicely clarified the rules for next month, tightening them up. With the motto Press record- play bass -press stop. No loopers just the one bass track.

Used hot glue seemed to go ok. Was a bit harder to get neat though. And as said it may be a pain if it needs to be removed but it didn't feel much different to what I've seen in other amps.
-
Can't be 100% but if your buying a finished neck it's just that all holes drilled, nut and finished in whatever lacquer.
-
It's certainly not backlash. I think we just need to stick to the original premise of making it as simple and level a playing field as possible just bass, amp or direct, hit record maybe edit the length. Anyone can do it even with a phone infront of a cab and not have to worry what they are up against. The use of a looper I feel would not be in the spirit of the comp imo as we might as well all go hell for leather and join in the composition challenge. Not to sound harsh but if we are going to allow loopers etc I think I would bow out the comp myself as I would feel I couldn't compete with the more advanced noodles due to the tech basically.
Gents, a few thoughts on the looper thing... I do a lot of composing with loopers myself, I'm a huge fan of layering up bass parts to create a complex composition, but I'm not convinced that it's really in the spirit of the noodle bar... It's early days yet for the competition and it's still not fully defined what constitutes a noodle and what doesn't (it is also not my place to dictate the rules)... So far a number of noodlers have ended up using their minute for what essentially is a minute long solo bass composition, some on the other hand have posted up a single riff... None have submitted themselves playing smoke on the water a week after buying their first bass yet, but that would also be in the spirit of things. I think using a looper, especially if not building up the loops within the minute, to create a complex layered composition would fall under the remit of the full blown compo comp as opposed to the noodle bar. In my mind a noodle should be; PRESS RECORD - PLAY BASS - PRESS STOP Whether your doing that through a ton of high end recording gear, or plonking a phone in front of your cab doesn't matter. The beauty for me is in the simplicity.
I fully agree with this. And adding one of the points of the comp was to make it easy for anyone at any skill level to be able to enter while not feeling they were up against other entries that they couldn't possible compete with. In the hope it would attract more people as well. We do have the other monthly composition challenge for the use of more effects , editing etc etc. This challenge was to be the kinda opposite.

I don't get why loopers should be used in a simple noodle. We should really adhere to the original rules no loopers or layering and in the spirit of the noodle minimum editing etc etc.

High fret buzzing - what am I letting myself in for?
Twincam replied to TPTroll's topic in Repairs and Technical
It all depends on the severity of the situation and how much fret material you've got to work with. If it's possible to level the frets or create a fall away without losing too much material then great. But for a neck with a severe ski jump and/or not much material left the solution is to remove frets, level the board then refret. Which can be a pain! So it can be an easy fix or it can be rather annoying. And yes, washers won't effect a ski jump but are a very common fix for a common problem mentioned earlier. Heat would not be wise either!
That's what I said. -
I've got a few components that the old spooge has became a bit weak! And a bit of vibration going on. Is hot glue from a glue gun ok for this or should I use something else??? Is the glue OK to use on caps too? Cheers
