1. If this had been in the north east this would have been mine.
2. The longer a Thread/Discussion goes on for the probability of someone mentioning Heft increases. Unless it's an discussion about heft originally thus doubling the probability of someone mentioning Trace Elliot or Valve watts.
3. Only problem with wd40 is don't let in near unfinished woods like a rosewood fingerboard and if it gets into your pots it will likely knacker them!
4.
The hue made me think mahogany, but the grain pattern sent me down the basswood route (that and the weight). I shouldn't be surprised however, as my old Ibanez SR was mahogany bodied and was light as feather.
Indeed I didn't think it was mahogany till I was told by Jim fleeting himself. I always thought mahogany was heavy and darker in colour.
5.
Basswood?
What how dare you! Lol Although nothing against basswood as its actually a very good tone wood. The wood is in fact mahogany. Surprised?
6. I've seen and held these. Stunning basses in fantastic condition. I don't need to state the obvious but there of a very high quality. Guess if they were 5 string David would be keeping them.
7. I imagine it's poly in that case peel as much as you can off. Then remove residue with lighter fuel or methylated spirits etc etc that's what I would use on poly. Get a cotton bud dip it in the cleaning medium then in a hidden area just test to see if there is a reaction or paint stripping effect first! If not then good to go. Watch any electrics but anything alcohol related will just evaporate and not harm them, but doesn't mean they will like being soaked!
8. Really enjoyed that. Good heads up.
9. What exactly did you have done for £150?
10. That deep body cleanse sounds like something that comes with a happy ending. And ah all you have to do is wait 30 odd years for the ply wood errm I mean solid "heavy" alder and maple to dry and then the tone is free.
11.
This joker makes 'he who should not be named' ( clue: wide necks for builders fingers!!) sound positively knowledgable!!!!!!!! For a moment there I thought it was on sale for £220 hahahah......oh hang on......
Hahahaha
12.
Sounds cool, I like a toggle set up over blend, personally; pics?
Guess the light body wood...
13.
Plenty of "active tone" from your amp controls.
How it's set up is you can set one pickup tone then the other different which gets a little different or you can set them and use the toggle to quickly go from deep bass motown to funk and inbetween quicker than messing about with the blend etc. Although after playing around the blend confuses the issue as it also effects the tone when using a single pu as well as working as a blend. Desperately need a new cab though. Even with a speaker upgrade this week it's pants.
14. I'm in Durham. Trades possible. I will give you a pm.
15. Pre amp removed. Liking the new setup individual tones for the pickups plus the three way toggle and blend has given some extra scope for tone changes. I'm really not an active tone guy.
16. Wanted an all passive loom vol, tone, tone, blend, three way switch and mute toggle. instead of my east pre amp. Knew what I had in mind and although I could of made this myself I don't find electrics that fun. Or sourcing the bits for that matter. So I entrusted John to make me one up, very good communication and fast turnaround. Fitted right in with no issues. Decent quality so should last. He also supplied me the knobs. Came laid out on card with instructions and with the tools too! Which is a nice touch. He has also been very helpful with past enquirers. So a very positive review from me.
17. Highly regarded East UK uni 02 4 knob pre. Active Vol, blend. Treble, bass. Mid, mid sweep. Separate passive tone control. Active, passive toggle. Kill/mute switch toggle. Has lots of options jumpers and frequency trim pots. In full working order and includes all the good quality hardware, plus jack. Minus the battery box. Includes the paper work in the pics. So pretty much ready to fit. Now sold
18.
I've just about managed to hang on to mine.
I would of sold it many times over by now.
19.
Pointless coincidence corner: I learnt to drive in a Triumph Herald and passed my test in one. It wasn't a classic car at the time. Labouring the point somewhat, but I was in fact able to afford a 'vintage' bass when I was younger, however it wasn't a vintage bass at the time, it was simply 'a new bass'.
Yes well that's the other side, the ones who had an instrument in there younger days, lost it for whatever reason and yearn for the real vintage one, same model same colour. My first bass was a bit rubbish and uncool so no yearning will be felt in 30 odd years time. Although I did name it after an old girlfriend that I did yearn for lol.
20.
Interesting discussion… but the same can said about anything old vs. its modern day equivalent. The entire antiques trade operates on this basis. Some people just like old stuff because it’s old. It’s the reason why people like buying old cars, furniture, books, records, clothes, toys, whatever. Some of them are ‘design classics’, others are out of production… but mostly, people just like them because they’ve been around a long time and have accumulated history, character, mojo, whatever you want to call it. I used to own a ‘classic car’ in my early 20s - a Triumph Herald. Loved it. But it needed constant repair, continually failed its MOT and was far less cost-efficient than running a ‘modern’ Ford Fiesta, which I subsequently purchased. The Fiesta had no mojo whatsoever, but it was fuel efficient, the heater worked and the body wasn’t in danger of detaching itself form the chasis if I braked too hard. It was all round a better product, albeit lacking in mojo (and sunroof). Same applies to bass guitars. The modern day equivalents are - in the majority cases - going to be all round better instruments. But what you can’t replicate with modern production is ‘oldness’ (at least not until we invent time machines). And that’s essentially what people are prepared to pay money for - and will continue to do so. It's no more complicated than that
Interestingly I also owned a triumph herald in my early 20s. Too add to the discussion a lot of people put value into things like sentimentality which is made up of many things. With vintage basses and instruments in general there's the story, the history and who made the bass and the "mojo" factor, seeing your heroes play that model/year of production instrument. Could you not afford one when younger but can now etc etc. No one needs a vintage instrument but they play an important part in enhancing some people's enjoyment.
21. Get the Harley Benton version. I bought a fair few as dekos and fixed them up was mainly bad contact of the pu. There not bad built and sound very similar to the more expensive ones. The inbuilt eq is ok not great but useable, surprisingly powerful tho. As far as setup well its debatable you want a nice bit of relief not too much but the strings move a lot and string height is too preference but I found I needed at least 3mm again the strings move a lot. Very easy to fret so even a high action is playable.
22.
It's a shame that you can't come across someone hankering after an East pre-amp. Remove yours from your bass, the other bod fits it to his bass; win - win, no..? Hmm... Now, who would be wanting an East pre-amp, I wonder..? Maybe put it up for sale in the Marketplace here, and see if there are any offers..?
Who are we talking about as the pre is being removed tomorrow I had Kiogon make me a loom up yesterday so should be here tomorrow. All being well it will be on the marketplace. I've already offered it too Ambient.
23.
Why not just leave it in, and not use it ? It's always there if you want it then.
It's not the same as a pure passive loom. And I want a tone control for each pickup.
24.
Thanks for all of your replies. I don't want to remove the Bartolini preamp, I use it a lot. It's just that with the East preamp that I had in my Modulus, it had a passive control too. I used to have the passive rolled off totally, and just used to adjust the highs using the active control. The passive control affects a different frequency range than the actives, it sounds so much nicer. Less 'clanky' if you like. That's maybe why I've never gotten on with Musician basses, they sound too 'clanky' to me. Ideally I'd change the Bart to an East, but I can't afford that. Here's a schematic for the wiring for the Bart pre. Pm sent
25.
The heft is strong in them. The 500 is bloody loud too, even at 350W without an extension cab. Very easy to get a great sound.
Unfortunately disagree the 500w is loud but I didn't think it had that much authority and heft. The 200w and 100w are in my view a little weak and lack heft. I thought my old 90w carlsbro cobra had more heft than the 100w. Just my opinion of course.
