Yes well the pre amp is way more powerful than a passive circuit. When you turn up then it will overload any pre if the gain is set wrong. So you must turn the gain on the amp down. Find the setting on your bass you like. Then set the gain with the master volume on zero, by playing as hard as possible turn up the gain till the clipping light starts to flash then back it off a small amount till the flashing is minimal or non at all. This gives the best noise to signal ratio and gives you the best volume before clipping.

Am I having deja vu I'm sure I've read this exact same post a year or more ago. Weird! There's nothing wrong with learning a new style or having your own and sticking with it. Isn't music very personal and subjective. So you can either give it a go if it works it's another string in your bow if not then you gave it a go. Or stick to your guns and say that is your preferred style, be polite but don't let anyone say you should do something as you don't in music. People are not all the same, as you seen with the other player his fingers and style just naturally generate more tone. In my view the secret of music is that there is no secret and that we are all different. Hence so many different types of music from punk to classical.

Well if you do I would like to hear about it and pics are good.

So how does it sound with a bass?
OK so what sort of small prize would encourage people to enter / vote? clip tuner maybe? set of feeler gauges or similar? Candlelit dinner for two with me at a romantic retreat of your choosing?
Well even tho I don't use one I thought some nice custom made engraved picks would be cool. The winner or top three get one each and maybe the winner gets something else relatively inexpensive but cool as well. At the end of the year we crown a noodle champion and they get something as a reward and certificate and the pleasure of putting it in there sig. I flooded this idea at the start I would of put in the funds, I don't think skol was too keen. But if a few people think it's a good idea I'm still willing to contribute out my own pocket would be cheap if one or two of us would be willing to do so. It would be fun I think even not to win anything it makes it a bit more attractive maybe. Although we still want to keep the noodles simplicity down and not have people really over thinking it. As the idea was for anyone of any calibre or minimum equipment to enter. Last month I would of gotten the noodle wooden spoon or is that chopsticks?
I'm trying to make up for my slight disappointment that nobody cares with blind enthusiasm... ... This month is the month!
Ah yes ok I'm up for that too. So how many entries this month then? I'm thinking at least 21. With double or triple the amount of voters. If we can convert the people who spend hours on here a day to spending 5 min actually playing (any old sh*t) while recording it then it could happen. I still think a small prize would of been a good idea.
No need I am confident this month is the month the Noodle Bar takes off!
Willing to put a friendly wager on that?

I like a good anecdote. I'm wondering if I would of let him lick the battery. I think I might of let him.
-
But without voltage there would be no current? So no or under ten volt safe to handle? That is the way I've seen them tested after drainage. I used to test with my tongue that didn't work so well. (obviously never lick a capacitor!)
-
If you want to discharge the cap, best way is to get a couple of high voltage ceramic resistors -connect a crocodile clip to either end and clip it to both ends of the electrolytic. Leave it alone for a minute or so. Any residual charge within the cap will be shorted, through the resistors which turn the charge into heat.
I use the resistor to ground method. It works although got a bit of a spark off the small cap even though I check them with a multimeter.
I presume you're wanting to change these simply by precaution..? I know they can often age badly (I have valve amps, too...), but those don't look, from the photo, to be in bad shape at all. Just sayin'.
The large one is bubbled and slight leakage in the middle I missed it a few times, you can just see white on top of the bubble. And the other is in good nik but will be changed as a precaution. The amp is buzzing away through the speaker but working well, it sounds like the power line 50/60hz way so I assume it's the burst filter cap especially as it doesn't change with volume. It could be a valve ac heater issue or some other grounding issue. But since the amp is original never serviced and the cap is burst then I will start there. Was £18 odd quid for both the caps. Oh and if anyone in future reads this if changing valves on a wem dominator from the 70s unless using original mullards with pin 1 and 2 connected internally, you need to move the connections on the actual socket from p1 to pin 2 if you don't the tubes have no bias!!!! And the amp will hardly work too before the valve goes in a bad way!
Now that i think of it the head space could have been used as a port bt itself. Simply cutting an acces to the inside of the cab near the back and plugging tha back of the head space would make a pretty good shelving port. Only calculation needed would be to know how much area to remove from the top of the box.
Indeed I did think of this. I'm new to calculating cab area, port length and other specs so I did it simply. It's only a cab used in the house anyhow. Works very well. Needs a bit of distance from the wall though.

It's ok I've found it thanks is a 32uf 350v if anyone reading this needs to know in future, the large one is a 50+50uf 350v
-
Hi I can't identify the blue cap on the rights values. uf or voltage nothing written on it I think it's a 50uf but I can't find the right schematic for a wen dominator 25 bass. I know all the dominators' were similar but best get it right. I have a replacement cap for the larger one. If anyone can tell me I would appreciate that. Nightmare! Come on what company was it.

I've joined soundcloud in a attempt to improve recording playback quality YouTube was horrible.
OK I've got a good feeling about this months noodles... lets see if we can hit the lofty heights of 20 entries
That would be great.
... which probably explains why our noodles are bottom of the list..!
It's all starting to make sense now.
-
No, no, noodles aren't to be 'worked on', they should just present themselves, 'warts'n'all'. Practise, certainly; woodshed if you must, but leave a space for just capturing the moment. Plug in, press 'Record' and play..! Besides, I need to have some chance, and if you're going to pull out studied masterpieces, my unpolished offerings will never get a chance to glitter..!
By working on a noodle I meant looking on basschat haha
-
Also, due to the decidedly underwhelming level of interest, next month I might try and bribe BCers to vote with some sort of bass related prize... Kinda like a raffle... We need more voters!
Indeed more voters and participants. Surely isn't hard to bang out a little noodle I'm doing it just for fun, quickly, without hardly any equipment or thought. Which is probably the reason for my results haha. But it really is just a bit of fun I love listening to others noodles. I do admit some are a little serious for my tastes, but all are very good it is genuinely hard to vote for just three, which is part of the fun.
-
Well done subsonic simpleton. I believe that is twice you've won now. I think at the end of the year we should have a king of the noodle. And a wooden spoon beating for poor old me lol. I'm working on my noodle I don't think it will be impressive, maybe something punk inspired.

I have a dominator 25 bass in mint condition. It sounds great, goes surprisingly deep and can do glassy if you like. Can go fairly loud but really it's only a practice or recording amp. Anyone still use one? One issue, it vibrates somewhere in the cab at higher volume. Looks a nightmare to investigate anyone know how the front grill comes off. Really it should of had some extra reinforcement in the cab, especially since the head is nicely suspended with suspension which is something all combos should have! Should I go hell for leather trying to find the rattle or just plug it into another cab. As I don't want to destroy the cab.

Been thinking for a while about changing them as I've never liked single coils and having an even bigger single coil I don't think is me. I do like humbuckers tho or darker sounding pick ups. So looking for suggestions I think there emg35 size have to check that!

I've seen something local I really want and I'm slightly short (typical) so I wasn't going to do this but I'm knocking off the postage cost for a UK sale. This will be the amps one and only price drop. £300 delivered fully insured for loss, tracked etc and very well packaged. My feedback http://basschat.co.uk/topic/226645-twincams-feedback/page__p__2989599__hl__twincam%20__fromsearch__1#entry2989599
